DASHI in Berlin

An interesting option on the Berlin culinary map. Reasonable prices. I really enjoy Asian cuisine, but ultimately, DASHI's offerings didn't quite convince me.

The congee tastes very good, but unfortunately it's too salty. The chicken katsu unfortunately fell apart and was okay. The tea is very tasty.

They sadly removed braised pork belly from the menu. I think it was their signature dish and the only reason I went there quite often. Service and ambient still great! Well I uploaded a picture and it’s gone from the menu!?

A chic restaurant, but more suited to quick meals. I found it inviting and pleasantly quiet when I was there. The Japanese curry seemed classic and tasted mild. I would describe it as typical comfort food. The portion could have been a bit larger. I paired it with a refreshing natural wine. I would come back for a quick midweek dinner.

Curry & Rice + Chicken katsu, nice, simple and good tasting

opening times are misrepresented. website says until 22:00, GMaps says until 21:00. Our party was sent away even just a couple minutes after 20:00 saying „we only do takeaway now“. Disappointing to be mislead!

We got the Caesar salad, the sloppy Joe, the fries and the shirley tempels. Delicious fusion food, super fun menu, nicely decorated and nice staff. Would definitely go back.

The Curry+Rice with chicken was truly disappointing. Felt like a very cheap version of Indian Chole curry without the chole. The billing person was nice and kind, and schezwan fries were decent

Unfortunately not what it used to be. Still love the vibe and the dishes in general, but it feels like they’re not really trying to really deliver a top experience anymore.

Fairly average food for an above-average price.

A nice shop and service, but the food unfortunately wasn't that great in terms of taste. The curry was rather lukewarm, a bit sour (apart from that, quite far from what I expected from a Japanese curry), and the breading on my katsu had completely separated from the meat before I even took the first bite. Beyond that, it wasn't cut properly, so the entire meat was hanging in one piece. Overall, a disappointing experience, especially since it wasn't exactly cheap. However, I do get a bonus point for the quick service.

Very good location. No lines. A bit expensive. The food was good, but the curry was very filling, and I didn't realize it was such a soup. Everything else was wonderful, though.

The food and lemonades are delicious, especially the Szechuan fries. You'll also find a very warm and child-friendly hostess here.

The food is consistently bad, for years, not one thing on the menu is good. I visit every once in a while and it is consistently bad. How could something be consistently bad for years.

17 Euros for a dish, can’t even cook rice properly.

I would definitely recommend this place for a nice meal out. The staff are really friendly and the food came out quickly. I was recommended the Caesar salad and I didn't regret it. I got a large salad with crispy chicken on the side — everything was delicious! The interior deserves special mention — it’s very stylish and reminiscent of a first-class train carriage from a Wes Anderson film, such as The Darjeeling Limited. I would definitely come here again!

We had such a wonderful dinner spread and my top picks are my main beef dish, the appetizer prawns, Sze Chuan fries, both desserts and my refreshing grass jelly drink 🍷 The restaurant has a nice retro touch to it with minimalistic features and it felt to me that I was in an 80s coffee shop back in Singapore (minus the stylish lights and deco) We were lucky that we came on a Monday evening when it was not too busy as the space looks small yet cosy. Hospitality is one of the best, probably number #1 in Mitte! Thanks Dashi for the memorable evening ❤️

We were at the restaurant with a group of over ten people – with a reservation in advance. Unfortunately, despite this reservation, we still had to wait, which was not surprising given the very small space. The food, unfortunately, did not impress us at all: The dishes were consistently far too sour and extremely salty – truly disappointing in terms of taste. The only positive thing about our visit were the drinks, which were actually well-mixed and delicious. The atmosphere in the restaurant was rather unpleasant – it was very stuffy and warm, despite the door being open. The noise level was high, which made conversation even more difficult for our larger group. The staff consisted of two waitresses. One of them, as I understood, was the manager. She was very friendly and helpful, but clearly overworked and seemed exhausted. The second waitress was obviously new and seemed overwhelmed – she barely knew her way around and couldn't really help us. While this was understandable, it was of course difficult for the flow of the service. The absolute low point, however, was the restroom: It was very dirty, there was no toilet paper, and the smell was very unpleasant. A complete no-go for me. I rarely write reviews, but in this case, I feel compelled to. The restaurant definitely has some improvement to make in several areas—especially cleanliness, organization, and the quality of the food. Despite that, we tipped the manager because she made a lot of effort, and she definitely needs support!

The total was €49 as we bought 2 Shiitake congee, 1 coke braised pork, and a single serving of Sichuan fries. Seeing the strong positive reviews I was beyond excited to try this place. Unfortunately as someone who was raised eating congee this place has not even hit the mark as edible. The Shiitake mushroom was sour. The congee itself had a weird funk to it which can be caused by not washing the grains before cooking. There is no flavor depth and the YouTiao/ Fried donut sticks were old and not fried on spot as usual Chinese way. It is soggy, hard to tear and had an old oil flavor. 3/10 The braised pork was just as depressing. To start, it was not as tender as how traditional braised pork should be (the meat is suppose to tear apart softly with the flavor from the fat melting on your tongue), but it was still fine. What really bothered me was the fact that the sause did not fully absorb into the pork. It’s suppose to be a burst of flavor not pork dipped in sauce. The Coca-Cola flavoring was sweet as I expected, but there lacked any other flavor profile and was not properly salted. (And I’m someone who argues for less salted foods) This dish was almost offensive to my culture. 1/10 On a brighter note, the fries were not too bad. They are thinly sliced potatoes almost into the shape of fries then deep fried with a batter coating and topped with Sichuan oil. It was a nice take. My only suggestion would be to have thicker cuts of potatoes as what we were served were basically crumbs of potatoes. 6.5/10 The service here was okay, they were friendly and not much else to say about that. The interior is a tight area with small amount of seating. They don’t seem to get busy so more seating wouldn’t be necessary. I would suggest finding an authentic Chinese restaurant for those dishes. The place is also called Dashi which is a Japanese name although these dishes I’ve had originate from China.

This is should be labeled as a fusion restaurant, as my supposed to be classic sloppy Joe's tasted more like a Korean bbq. The one thing that I really like was only the drink which is very refreshing and creamy. Really good for summer.

I was actually looking forward to a tempeh sando because of the menu, which is also on the website, but the menu at the diner didn't list any tempeh sando... So it would be great if the menu on the website could be updated, as I suspect (since I haven't read a review about a tempeh sando yet) that it hasn't been updated for a while... The food itself (sloppy joe and shiitake congee) was also very overpowering due to the spices. The youtiao were also a bit too greasy for me – sure, they're deep-fried, but they tasted and felt like they had come straight from the oil onto the plate, they were that greasy. The Szechuan fries, however, were very tasty! I wouldn't go back again, except for the fries.

i loved the melting brownie so much...please put it back on the menu 🥹🥹 the Chicken Sando sandwich is also very good.

Visiting the restaurant was great, but ordering from Wolt was bad. The restaurant is simple and the food is good quality & tasty. But the chicken order was soooo small when ordering from Wolt it made me lose trust in the quality of this place. Maybe I’ll go back in person. Worth a try once, but it’s a hit or miss.

The food is really delicious, but the staff's appearance in slippers and other things really puts your appetite off. If that's not important to you, this place is a 10/10. The seating isn't comfortable, though; it's more for a quick lunch.

Used to love this place when it first opened. Food was legit. But every time I go back the food and the menu get slightly worse. Still tasty but not the same. The braised pork for instance, the radish is key in this dish, at first the number of radish dwindles, and yesterday, it didn’t have any and ofc the meat is going to be dry without the radish. And they removed chicken congee. I’ve recommended this place to many of my friends but I don’t think I will anymore.

Service was top. Seating is a bit difficult for tall people - the stools are really small. The sandwich was actually tasty but for the price I would have expected a thicker schnitzel like in the pictures here, so with Katsu Sandwich I see a schnitzel that is as thick as a finger, at least. Mine was quite thin, like a Wiener Schnitzel.

Food was delicious. I ordered the Chicken Sando to take away and it was also delicious, but I found all the items a bit expensive for the price. But I love ordering at the checkout and paying straight away.

Annoying. Ordered two chicken sando and got a mortadella thick piece of chicken (in each one) - 1mm. It was super greasy and soaked in fat, but not in a good way - now I just feel super sluggish. Looking at what people get when they go there in person, makes me feel scammed.

tl;dr, I won’t be returning. Go elsewhere :) Food: disappointing. Pork belly dish: room temperature, not warm, not hot. the pork belly meat was tough. There was barely any sauce. Flavour was fine. Chicken Katsu Sando: dry. The chicken was dry, the sando was dry. The pickles that came with it were yummy. Service: Forgettable. Atmosphere: Cool vibe, good music, the food and space are both attractive. Price point: expensive for what you get. Unfortunately for this dining experience I don’t eat with my eyes. I eat with my tastebuds. They were not satisfied. I’ve left feeling sad I’ve wasted a meal.

Absolutely horrific. This food doesn’t remind anything of Japanese katsu. Watery, non-tasty curry. Overcooked, mushy rice. Way overpriced food. Super salty. Congratulations. One of the worst and over-priced places in Berlin.

Literally the best spot for lunch and dinner! The congee is something you should try if you like to explore new taste buds. The Sando if veggie or meat option are a nice snack, but caution they’re filling tho. Szechuan fries are a must have! Also I’m in love with the interior - a mix between retro and timeless diner

Love this place! Food is so good and interior also! Feels so elevated and chic. I love the chicken sando and fries but also everything else is really tasty. Grass jelly drink! Or especially melon granita is a showstopper!

If you enjoy a casual, laid-back atmosphere, this is the place. But overall, it’s pretty mediocre. The chicken with rice was decent—the only reason I’m giving it 4 stars. Croquettes or what, it was not tasty at all. The seating was uncomfortable, and you have to place your belongings in a basket.

My expectations were the way higher. The interior and graphic design are ultimately good. The food is very unhealthy. You smell the fried oil once you entered and this smell of fries is everywhere. Everything you order is double friend. You have nothing to order if you count calories except the salad. The fried potato bites were super spicy. The cold tea was over sweated. Stylish but doesn’t suit my diet preferences.

Tricky to judge this as I tried the curry only but will be back to try some more items. I ordered the curry with chicken katsu. Really liked the chicken, but the sauce was too sweet for 'my personal liking'. Needless to say, it was a good sauce that I imagine many people liking! The portion was filling for one, and the presentation was lovely. Food came quickly, so they definitely hit the 'diner' mark.

It's good if you want to eat Berlin style. But it's not good value for money and it's not authentic Japanese. It makes the coffee, but we leave a little disappointed. Especially since I was gently forced to leave a tip

That was a somewhat jaw dropping experience - please admire attached photo that displays tamago sandwich: two pieces of toast with a hardboiled egg and egg paste in-between; surely a direct import from egg-crisis ridden U.S.A., which would justify staggering 10.5€ I paid for this culinary experience😂. But seriously: never before in my life have I experienced such low quality coupled with such high price. Hashtag do!not!recommend!.

One of our colleagues (María☺️) recommended this place for a dinner with work colleagues and we absolutely loved it. It had a special energy. And the food was very nice, they brought all dishes extremely fast! I kind of felt as if we were dining 30 years before in Twin Peaks, haha. Will be coming back when in Berlin. Beware that the space is limited though, just in case you’d like to plan your visit in advance or come sooner/later. Hugs from Spain 💛

This is 'Szechuan meets Japanese' place! Fun food. If you are not good at spicy food, please make sure if it is ok for you. But in general it uses Szechuan sauce mildly. Their croquet (Korroke, in Japanese) is vegetable croquet, nicely fried and good taste. Their Katsu Sand comes with slight spicy vegetable in the sandwich, which matches very well to the cutlet, and we loved it. We shared one sandwich but it is not a large portion. 'dashi' in Japanese means 'soup stock' and that is why we didn't notice this place servicing such a lovely menu. Its location is near Naturalkundemuseum U Bahn station and in that area, it is quite a good eatery.

Very cool venue with an upscale diner feel. The Caesar salad was my favorite and is something I have a hard time finding good versions of in Berlin. We had the chicken and egg sandwiches which were both delicious. Staff was friendly and we were served pretty quickly after ordering which is appreciated when visiting during the lunch hour on a weekday.

The chicken conggee was such a heartwarming meal, delicious! The melon granita was also so fresh and unique. The interior design is also cozy and rare in Germany. Would visit again!

Really good, authentic but not uncreative food at largely decent prices, really cool ambiance, very friendly staff... Love a place with this tight a branding, super cool!

Unfortunately we were really disappointed with the food overall. The ambience and furnishings are very nice, hence 3 stars instead of 2. The Tamago Sando (Japanese egg salad sandwich) was really disappointing. A lot of mayonnaise and pickles and therefore very runny, very little egg. And not soft-boiled, as described, but hard egg. And if you look at other reviews, there are also pictures of a real sandwich in which the filling doesn't leak and there's no old hard-boiled egg, so there seems to be a lot of variation in quality. The Chicken Sando wasn't really anything special for the price either. The two sandwiches weren't served at the same time, the tamago came much later, which I can't understand with a cold sandwich. The Szechuan fries were our “highlight”, they were really extremely good. Overall, as other reviews suggest, the food (and the service) unfortunately didn't do justice to the price or the great interior, or at least we thought so.

I really like the atmosphere at Dashi and always try to eat there before I leave Berlin by train. The service is always friendly and accommodating. The drinks are super delicious, the desserts are great! Not all of the dishes on the menu were consistently good - congee was sometimes too thick or not hot - but everything was still within a good range and mostly top.

Best experience ever! The staff super friendly and the service and food outstanding. You gotta be there early because it might happen that they run out of items offered in the menu. Everything is very tasty and the overall experience 10/10.

I had the Korokke Curry and a Traditional Winter Melon Iced Tea. It was served very quickly. Overall, it was OK. The curry was tasty, but I would have expected a bit more vegetables or sliced cabbage, as two slices of carrot, a spoonful of cabbage and a spoonful of spring onion were about it. Of course, there was the delicious rice and two croquettes to go with it. The iced tea had a lot of jelly cubes, making it hard to drink, but it came with a spoon for the jelly cubes so that worked out.

DASHI Diner is now our trust spot if we want to go out and have a good dinner in a nice and comfy place. Pork belly, curry, chicken katsu or fries are some of our favs dishes 🤍

It is a super overrated place. Everything was cold. The chicken sando was too dry, and the pork belly was just okay. Cold fries? No comments. The melon granita came with fresh melon, but the melon itself wasn’t tasty—too watery. The staff was nice, but I agree with other reviewers about the strong smell of chlorine 😵‍💫.

I was there alone for dinner last night. Ambiance is very nice, clear, tidy concept. Atmosphere was good too. Service was magical. The food also tasted good, but unfortunately I upset my stomach and am lying flat all day today. I had a Caesar salad with katsu and Japanese croquettes with dipping sauce. Everything tastes OK, but apparently not completely hygienic. As I was leaving the store, I saw two kitchen employees sitting on the worktops in the kitchen without any (work clothes) uniform, i.e. chef's jacket, etc. Not exactly charming when employees sit on the kitchen table in sweatpants instead of cleaning the kitchen at the end of the day. I am aware that you can always have bad luck and upset your stomach. However, I don't like paying to lie in bed with stomach cramps while probably untrained copyists sit around in the kitchen in sweatpants on stainless steel furniture. I would like HACCP to be implemented better here.

Food is good but just not worth the money, it’s too expensive for the quality and presentation

A diner that hopefully stays. Pleasant, bright atmosphere with a view of Invalidenstrasse. Beautiful wood paneling inside. The chicken sandwich is excellent, incredibly tender, in a fluffy brioche with a nice slightly sour sauce and fresh carrots. Be careful of the large portion of French fries alone: ​​combined with the Sando, it's too much. A smaller portion would be desirable.

We ordered the fries, korokke curry, chicken congee and chicken katsu sando. The fries had extra batter on them which didn't make for the most pleasant texture and didn't allow for the nori salt flavour to come through. We appreciate they were hand cut but overall it was only just okay. The korokke curry was unlike any Japanese curry we've ever had in Japan or any iteration outside of Japan. While it wasn't specified as being Japanese, it was implied by calling it a korokke curry. It tasted heavily of tomato and sweet vinegar, similar to ketchup. Again not terrible but definitely not to our liking. The chicken katsu sando, like the curry wasn't typical of a Japanese sando. While it was okay, it tasted more like a chicken schnitzel sandwich. I understand it's a modern interpretation of traditional flavours but when the end result is worse off, it might be time to revaluate your choices. The chicken congee (not pictured) unfortunately was the worst of all. The texture was thick and gluggy and tasted overwhelmingly of salt. This could have easily been fixed by adding more stock to help both the flavour and texture. The drinks were okay and the staff was very pleasant. They gave us a new bowl of congee after a fly fell (and died) into our original bowl. Unfortunately our overall experience was disappointing. The food is not worth what you pay for.

I could recommend this place a year ago. Unfortunately not anymore… The food preparation quality is just not there.

The food was actually delicious but unfortunately we had to find a soaked paper towel in our salad. After discreetly informing the service, we were offered a free dessert. But that was then forgotten. We then left. Too bad.

The portions were small, food was forgotten, the staff was unfriendly, it smelled of chlorine. The examples in the menu sounded completely different than the food looked. It still tasted okay, but we went further to another restaurant because we weren't full.

I came here because I saw many other reviews praising the chicken katsu - and I was very much disappointed. There’s no way to spin it, that’s no katsu. The curry tasted ok but the spices mix wasn’t a standard Japanese one and overall it wasn’t the right thickness either. The only reason why I’m not giving it even less stars is that it was edible in the end, and the staff was ok.

Really cool and relaxed little diner with great dishes. Absolutely fair in price and great in taste. I saw the DASHI as a recommendation on YouTube and was absolutely not disappointed.

An overall good experience with a few faults. The food was mostly great. For appetizers we had the korokke which was appropriately crispy outside and warm and pillowy inside, the chicken katsu was alright (wish there was a pork option) and the tonkatsu sauce was nice. The mains where all very good: the braised pork was super tender and the coca cola sauce was rich with a punchy and deep flavour. The surprise of the evening was the chicken congee, which I never had, but was pleasently surprised how good it was. Warm, comforting, delicious with the fluffy quẩy/youtiao dough sticks on the side to contrast the soft texture was perfect. The desserts: the mango sago was fine, a bit rare and bland for my taste. The brownie was warm, sweet and overall a good dessert, but nothing to write home about. The worst part was the service, while being very friendly, nice and amiable, the servers were very confused. Every dish came out of order and the service members had to be reminded and informed of what we ordered because they forgot everything, for every course. So there were prolongued periods of time where some of us waited trying to figure out what’s going on, while the others were already served, until we decided to act and ask. To sum up, nothing terrible and as said before, an overall satisfying and enjoyable experience. Maybe some of the employees were just starting out and don’t know how things work yet so I wouldn’t hold it against them and would gladly come and dine here again.

Honestly, I’m really disappointed. The brand looks great on Instagram, but when I actually came to dine in, the lighting and atmosphere felt really weird and totally different from the photos online. As for the food, it was pretty underwhelming—especially the pork belly, which was super dry and tough. The mains didn’t meet my expectations, though the drinks were okay. Overall, I was quite let down and wouldn’t recommend dining here⋯⋯

What I like about this place how simple their menu is. No fuss, just a few items. This small diner is located at a corner intersection which was very convenient. Place is small so our group was divided into two tables. Food price was affordable too. Staff were friendly and the service was fast. Food was amazing, I ordered tofu congee and did not disappoint plus side of small chicken cutlet. Their servings was plenty and filling. If you want a quick bite this is the place to go!
