The food was really great, the schnitzel with sour cream was fantastic. We didn't like the atmosphere in the bar area; even though we were the only ones there at 5 pm, we were given a table by the staff entrance...

The food (venison goulash) was very tasty, a good portion, and attractively presented. Dessert (fried apple rings with ice cream) was delicious. The staff was friendly, and special requests were no problem. I will definitely be back.

Everything was beautiful and delicious, only this pasta that accompanies the hamburger didn't drive me crazy, but the hamburger was really delicious.

We went there with the whole family over the weekend. It was so much fun and lovely. The waiter and waitress were incredibly friendly and very attentive. We'll definitely be back! 😀

After our visit to the castle, we stopped there for lunch with two adults and two children. The decor is rustic and simple. The waiter was very friendly and attentive, and the wait time was perfectly acceptable. The food was delicious, and the prices were fair. If I had to make one suggestion for improvement, I would play music that complements the castle atmosphere instead of the radio. Tips can only be given in cash, which is a shame for the exemplary waiter today.

We had a wonderful day at and around the castle. We only intended to have a coffee in the restaurant at one point, but the delicious aroma quickly convinced us to order a meal. We haven't eaten this well in a long time; the portions are truly generous, everything is freshly prepared, and the price is excellent. On top of that, the service was so friendly and even funny – that's a rare treat. They really took their time for their guests. The owner is very fortunate to have such a great team. A big compliment to the kitchen staff as well. A fantastic team... keep it up! We'll definitely be back, even though we don't live nearby... 👍🤗

We had a fantastic meal, and a special request was happily and warmly accommodated. The staff were very friendly and had a great sense of humor; we felt very comfortable. The ambiance was lovely and the view wonderful. We'd love to come back and are already looking forward to our next visit. Highly recommended, especially considering the excellent value for money.

We visited Altena Castle today and then had dinner at the castle's own restaurant. The castle itself is worth a visit, but the restaurant takes it to the next level. It's super delicious, reasonably priced, and the service is very friendly.

We haven't eaten this well in a long time; everything is freshly prepared and super delicious. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the service is very pleasant and friendly. We'll definitely be back and recommend it with a clear conscience. Thank you. We felt so comfortable.

We had the sambal schnitzel and the pork fillet in dark beer mead sauce. These days, we've rarely eaten so well! The price is unbeatable. Schnitzel (freshly prepared) with fries and salad was just under €17. Pork fillet with croquettes and salad, with a truly delicious sauce, was just under €22... Where can you find something like that these days!? The staff were incredibly friendly and efficient, thank you very much! We'd come back again and again if the food quality and prices remained the same!

The ambiance and friendly service are nothing short of praise. However, the main course at the murder mystery dinner (pork fillet and croquettes) was only mediocre. Croquettes were from a packet, the fillet was dry, and the Parmesan crust was merely a dusting of the meat. A shame.

Delicious food, a B+. The service is also ok, a B+. The atmosphere, considering the setting and the beautiful views, is a B+. All in all, a wonderful establishment in a beautiful castle! A very beautiful place, both the castle and the restaurant. Not every castle has a decent cafe. Most often, it's cheap fast food. But this one is a truly authentic establishment. So, I recommend it!

Fantastic! We're thrilled with the parking lot and the shuttle service to the adventure elevator, and with the castle's exhibitions. And now we've had a truly delicious schnitzel in the restaurant. It was very busy when we were there. Despite that, everything was very clean and the service was super fast. We were there with our 4-year-old son, the food arrived within a few minutes, and there's a small play area for kids. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. We'd be happy to come back :)

The castle is a beautiful and quaint location. We stayed at the JGH with a large group and have been guests of the restaurant several times. The staff is warm, dedicated, and personable. The menu is a successful mix of classic dishes as well as creative new creations, all of which are a true feast for the palate.

We celebrated our wedding with 70 guests in June of this year with Toto and his team at the castle restaurant, and we can only take this opportunity to thank you again!!! The planning was straightforward, and no request was too much trouble. The ambiance at the castle was simply unique for the most beautiful day of your life. The food, from canapés to dessert, was simply exquisite and received praise from every guest. The staff was described by all guests (and we can only agree) as accommodating, friendly, and funny. We would choose the castle restaurant team and the venue again anytime and can highly recommend it to everyone!!! Anni & Alex

Delicious food with a fantastic view in bright sunshine

We visited the castle a week ago with a group of 24 Chinese students. After successfully passing the knight's exam, we enjoyed a hearty lunch in the restaurant. The restaurant team was simply fantastic! We easily arranged the details over the phone beforehand, and we were not disappointed! There was plenty of currywurst, schnitzel, and fries. The children loved it, and they sent home many photos of the delicious meal. The service was also excellent! Despite being busy, the staff were friendly, quick, and in a fun mood. We'll definitely be back!

I went to this restaurant with my girlfriend on Sunday. The food was unfortunately only average and quite overpriced. But it was okay. What bothered both of us was the extremely unfriendly and bad-tempered staff. We sat outside in the castle courtyard and asked the young lady for the menu. She just pointed at the blackboard on the wall. Once we had made our decisions, we ordered drinks and food. The drinks were brought out to us, but we had to pick up the food ourselves inside the restaurant (pager system). Shortly after our drinks were ordered and delivered, loud music started playing. Apparently, the chef in the kitchen had a penchant for Radio Regenbogen. Both the radio station and the unbearable volume caused us to have to change seats. But even farther away from the speaker, the music was still extremely loud. I asked several times for the music to be turned down, and the staff just grinned stupidly. The castle is such a beautiful location, but then such a lousy atmosphere, which emanated solely from the restaurant. You should rethink your overall concept! Unfortunately, nothing is right here! The food was okay, but the rest of it made us never want to eat there again. What a shame, really, considering the castle is so amazing!

First, the positive: the food was really delicious, and eating in that atmosphere is simply wonderful. I don't think the self-service option when you're sitting outside is so great. Our food was forgotten, and the place wasn't even full. So we waited a total of an hour. At least they offered us a coffee as an apology, although we didn't have time to finish it. In summary: the food was super delicious, but the service definitely has room for improvement. We would still give the restaurant another chance, though.

Truly fabulous service. The waiter was very personable and humorous in a pleasantly relaxed manner. The chef came by after the food had been on the table for a few minutes and asked how things were. General service and customer interaction still hold a very high priority here. The food was also perfect. I had the freshest pounded Wiener schnitzel I can remember. They also offer more rustic fare, including game. Vegetarians/vegans needn't be afraid either; the menu has a dedicated page full of dishes from this category. All in all, I recommend this to anyone who is willing to pay the necessary amount of money for excellent food, drink, and hospitality.

Very tasty. The 20-minute wait was quite quick for three people. The staff was very friendly. There's a small play area for toddlers. For those who are undecided, like me, the menu is very manageable.

Today we had homemade roulade with dumplings and red cabbage for our main course, and baked apple rings and baked ice cream for dessert (truly, you should definitely try them!). You can immediately tell that the food is freshly prepared with high-quality ingredients. Everything is delicious and reasonably priced. Plus, there's a fantastic view from the table down into the Lenne Valley and the Sauerland mountains. We'd love to come back again. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Mega delicious food and great service with a great view

The beautiful view, good food, and amazing people made the trip worthwhile! I was pleasantly surprised by the selection of dishes and the excellent service. A successful blend of beautiful ambiance, great conversation, and the warmth of the Sauerland region. 🫶🙃

It was our first time there, a group of 10 after a guided tour. We made a reservation at relatively short notice, and it was very friendly on the phone, and it was even better in person. It's beautifully located in a private room, with a lovely ambiance, fast and attentive service, quick-witted :-), a lovely menu, and lovely, delicious food. We stayed longer than planned and ate more than we planned. We'll be back, whether as a group or individually.

I highly recommend the youth hostel, the castle, and of course the castle restaurant. The town of Altena is also very pretty and definitely worth a visit when the weather is nice.

We have actually never experienced this before when visiting a restaurant: - Staff are extremely attentive and particularly empathetic towards children - absolutely nice, friendly and always with a quick joke, but not at all pushy but coherent - an all-round feeling of being valued as a guest -direct reference to the viewing balcony, where you can enjoy the evening sun with an incredible view over the valley and the hills all around - All the meals chosen were first-class visually, in terms of quantity, freshness and taste, really without exception, like in a star restaurant - Highlight is the relaxed boss service with fun schnapps in the form of a syrup pinnacle for the young ones We simply had to comply with the repeated reference to gratitude regarding a positive review, which we usually do not do. We highly recommend a visit to the Altena castle restaurant! And we will also go there again, as this top restaurant in combination with the mighty castle backdrop is always worth a trip. We say “Thank you very much for this lovely evening!” :-) Top tip for families: The youth hostel in the castle and the associated Art Nouveau villa in front of it.

Coffee very thin and almost without taste. And in 2025 “ec card payments from 10 euros” is simply a customer-unfriendly impudence.

We arrived relatively early on a sunny Saturday around 1 p.m., and it was delicious! The venison goulash with herb spaetzle and red cabbage, as well as the venison bratwurst, were really good and reasonably priced. The server was very friendly. All in all, a top-notch experience.

The vegetarian nut roast was something completely different. Super tasty. The chef and landlord were also very nice!

To ALL Altena residents! Go out to eat again during the week, especially in the castle restaurant. The wild boar burger (I don't actually like game) with Schupfnudeln and TRUFFELMAYO was a 10000000/10, I haven't eaten something so creative and delicious for a long time. My companion had a salad with goat cheese, pear and walnuts which she also really enjoyed. A small suggestion for improvement was more than responded to and implemented and tried out straight away (only possible because there weren't that many people in the restaurant). The owner and the chef are just friendly and accommodating. We will recommend you at every opportunity. Thanks for the lovely evening! :)

Apart from a fantastic ambience and a fabulous meal, you definitely have to praise the super friendly and personable service of the waiter here in the restaurant! The food is really very fresh and modern and I was very surprised at how good it was. Only the restaurant itself really needs an update. Maybe everything has been redesigned with a TV somewhere. There are too many little things lying around everywhere. Anything a little more modern would be good. Then the restaurant could also be a highlight in itself, regardless of the castle. The food definitely has the potential to do that. You just have to get a lot more out of the space.

Absolut empfehlenswert. Tolle Ambiente durch die Burg, ohne aufgesetzt zu wirken. Als Bewohner von Altena ist es zweifelsohne die erste Adresse für gutes und leckeres Essen. Die Küche ist sehr gut und die Karte weißt immer wieder Überraschungen auf. Service tipp topp, ohne aufdringlich zu sein. Freue mich schon auf die nächste Gelegenheit.

We went to the castle with the children and stopped here afterwards... we received super friendly service and the food was fresh and delicious. I forgot to take photos because it was so delicious. We had schnitzel and for the children nuggets and "Affenpipi" hehe (original sound for Fanta).. We'll be back

We were there for a children's birthday. The food was great. The kids had fries with nuggets and the adults had fries and schnitzel - the meat was juicy and super tender. The appointment was made well in advance, on a Wednesday. The restaurant is usually closed on a Wednesday at 5 p.m. It was open longer for us that day. Despite working overtime, the staff was super friendly and funny. The kids were also allowed to go into the large knight's hall for a birthday photo! A great restaurant if you like to eat home cooking and want to take advantage of the castle charm. Gladly again!

The food: A dream. We were there twice and tried different things. Everything extremely tasty. Especially the venison bratwurst with cherries, or dark beer mead sauce... 🤤 And afterwards: A meadow orchard. 🥂😉 The service: Not just quick when served, also quick with the tongue. After a few minutes it was clear that you could do it with us: stupid jokes. We kept our bellies full with laughter. Rarely have I had so much fun eating. Thanks!

The restaurant is located in the middle of the old castle, which of course makes the ambience very special. The rooms are correspondingly large and the ceilings are high, so that you have enough space and are not crowded table to table. Our waiter Basti was extremely friendly and served us wonderfully, something you don't see too often these days. The food was delicious, the portions were large. All in all we were very satisfied and would come again. Thanks to Basti and his colleagues!

Agreements are not kept here. We had already requested a reservation for a children's birthday party months ago and everything was no problem. Now, a few weeks before the birthday, all you get is a shrug of the shoulders and the words that there is nothing left at that time. We can now celebrate the birthday somewhere else, as unfortunately we can't stop at the castle anywhere. Thank you so much for my daughter being totally disappointed now. I definitely won't spend another cent in this restaurant. The lack of commitment and indifference of people today is simply unbearable.
