Bockstube in Lindau (Bodensee)

We were passing through and this restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel Garni Brugger... it was such a lovely evening. Andreas provided us with everything we needed quickly and efficiently, the food was incredibly delicious, the restaurant is small and traditionally decorated, and the atmosphere is simply fantastic... we'd love to come back, thank you for the lovely evening...

If we could give more than 5 stars, we would! We had our best holiday meal yet on Lake Constance at the Hotel Engel. Andreas served us excellently and promptly, with a super friendly and relaxed manner. The drinks and food were simply indescribably fantastic! Highly recommended!!!

Even though there wasn't enough room inside, I ate the best roast beef with onions in a long time that evening.

A fantastic restaurant with excellent cuisine and extremely friendly service in a historic setting. We enjoyed our meals, Tafelspitz (boiled beef) and fried chicken (fried chicken), very much. Reservations are recommended, as the restaurant is quite popular, and rightly so. We'd be happy to return on our next visit to Lindau.

A very nice restaurant. Despite it being full, we were able to get a table for four without a reservation. The food was first-class and the staff was very friendly. I would happily give it 6 stars ;-)

Not good for tourist. Stood there and 3 other couples were sat after we showed to wait for a table and were sat. None were asked for a reservation. Someone else stormed off because of the wait and they offered them the table that they didnt even end up wanting anyways.

Waited in line for 20, before being told we would wait another hour. Prompt communication in the beginning from the wait staff would of been nice.

This was our first time in Lindau and we ate at a 4-star hotel the first two evenings, where we also stayed overnight. Unfortunately, the food there was underwhelming – the taste was rather average, but the price was completely exorbitant at €450 for two evenings (three people). After extensive research, we came across Restaurant Engel – and what a stroke of luck it was! As many others have already reported: The Wiener Schnitzel is the best I've ever eaten – truly! The service is warm, authentic, and down-to-earth – you immediately feel welcome. All the dishes we tried were prepared to the highest standards and with great attention to detail. The value for money is also particularly noteworthy: the prices are more than fair for the quality of the ingredients and the excellent preparation. An absolute must: the Kaiserschmarrn – heavenly! Many thanks to the entire team for this outstanding service! You can feel with every bite that the cooking and work here is done with real passion. For us it’s clear: the best restaurant on the island of Lindau!

A rustic Bavarian restaurant with appropriate decor and service in lederhosen. We received a friendly welcome even without a reservation and were able to find a very nice table (for two hours) in the bay window. Later on, after 7 p.m., it's probably impossible to get in without a reservation. The food was of high quality and superbly prepared. The veal Wiener schnitzel was super tender, and the potato and cucumber salad was very flavorful. The fish with fresh vegetables and pasta was also excellent. The prices are generally high, which reflects the quality offered. The menu is quite meat-heavy, but there are also vegetarian dishes. A word about the service: We felt very comfortable and even special requests (warm milk for our daughter) were accommodated without any problems. Almost all the tables outside were occupied whenever we walked by. So you have to wait a bit.

It was after 9:00 PM, and the motivation to serve guests was abysmal..... The beer was of an okay quality, but there was so much foam in the mug that it was missing a quarter of the beer... My wife's Aperol Spritz was of an okay quality... the mix was more watery than Aperol-like..... It was the worst restaurant on the island..... Hardly recommendable..... 🫤🫤🫤

Instead of sending us away, telling us they were fully booked, Nicole smiled, brought some beer and promised to organise everything - and it worked like a charm. Wow, I've eaten at many restaurants, but I'm not sure what to expect. This was so incredibly delicious. Absolutely amazing!!! The service was top-notch. Super personable and friendly, always making sure the guests don't miss anything. The only thing missing is something for children on the menu, like a children's menu, and the air in the restaurant is quite stuffy in hot weather. But none of that matters, because I'm looking at value for money and quality. And everything is perfect.

Three of us spontaneously went there for lunch. The food wasn't bad, but I was really disappointed with the value for money. For just under €27, you get tagliatelle with cream sauce, mushrooms, and a couple of small rumps of veal. The service was unfriendly and couldn't help me with my question about allergens; I had to ask the chef first! Half of the allergens aren't even listed on the menu, and they use a numbering system instead of the familiar letters. I'm glad I don't have a particularly serious allergy. The waitress simply deducted a tip from my billing without asking. Once, and never again.

Very, very delicious food. The fried potatoes are a hit, and everything else too, of course. The service is excellent and very, very friendly. You need that on vacation; it's nice to know something like this still exists. Best regards, We'll definitely be back. Thank you.

We were at the Engel last night and were glad we landed on the Engel's cloud. The roast beef with onions and spaetzle was excellent. Nicole served us kindly and, along with her colleague, took excellent care of our well-being. Thank you for this restaurant with heart.

We tried to reserve a table and were given strange looks. Then we showed up as agreed and had to squeeze into a super-cramped, uncomfortable table. The prices are also too high.

A wonderful welcome from a charming waiter in traditional attire. The service is flawless, and the decor is typical. The food is very good and plentiful. I wasn't particularly impressed by the local cuisine, but that's a personal opinion.

We had a 2 night stay over here at Hotel Engel, and saw long queues lunch and dinner every day, it surely has to be good ? It is in fact marvellous! Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy pancake pan grilled to crispy perfection, with lots of icing sugar that dance in your mouth, a small cup of apricot compote with fresh mint leaves balanced the coying sweetness! You can choose to add rum soaked raisins for a bigger bang to its already wonderful flavors. Classic Wiener Schnitzer, succulent veal fried in clarified butter, with a cute little jar of cranberry jam, with tangy warm potato and cucumber salad. Got to mention, this outshines schnitzer we had at Salzburg and Vienna! Every bite is buttery, moist, with no traces of over fried dryness. Attached some english google image translated menu for your easy reference, as they had no english menu. If you come to Lindau, you have to visit Engel!

Once again, a real insider tip. Very cozy, highly motivated and friendly staff, and sensationally good food. Traditional cuisine with that certain something, and I really had to ask if they were aware of how good they were. It was truly an unusual culinary and cultural experience.

At Restaurant Engel I was able to enjoy one of the best Wiener Schnitzels I have ever eaten - if not the best ever. Golden brown, crispy and perfectly fried on the outside, wonderfully tender and juicy on the inside. You can tell straight away that they work here with skill, attention to detail and high-quality ingredients. What makes the whole thing even better is the absolutely fair price. In a time when good food is often overpriced, Engel offers honest quality at a very humane price. The price-performance ratio is hard to beat. The entire cuisine in the Engel restaurant impresses with its down-to-earthness, freshness and taste. No frills, just real craftsmanship. That doesn't happen to me often, but 5 stars aren't enough here. The price for Lindau is on the lower side. But when you see the portion you have to travel far to get it. Almost a shame. I actually wanted dessert. No chance of doing that. Top quality food. A waitress who still has time to chat. As a private bonus for Lent, the Salvador There's simply no more I'll come by often

Hospitality? Unfortunately, not here! We were in the beer hall. Upon entering, we were met with a surprised look, and none of the staff moved. When we were seated, it took forever to get the menu. A waiter was busy emptying his wine glass, and a waitress who hadn't heard of service orientation. Oh, and the door—every time, the door was slammed shut, so the guests wouldn't know—okay, but the waitress should. On top of that, it was very noisy, as reservations were handled very uncoordinatedly between the upstairs restaurant and the downstairs one. The food was okay, but unfortunately, inedible as it was. I'd like to think again about customer and service orientation.

We popped in for two people, and they did their best to seat us between reservations. So glad they did. Everything was absolutely fantastic. Service was very friendly, quick and attentive, and the food was amazing.

The Engel restaurant is very popular, but if you get there early enough, you will definitely find a seat - if necessary at the same table with other guests. The atmosphere warm and inviting. The menu offers a good selection and the dishes we tried at dinner were fresh and well prepared. The schnitzel, the potato salad and the cheese spaetzle were very tasty. The landlady is friendly and creates a good atmosphere. Overall, a recommended place for a successful dinner.

Been here a couple times on visits to Lindau Insel. Hands down, top place in town by far. The waitress is the best in DACH! Tiny, so get a reservation for sure.

My wife, daughter and I came in here spontaneously after we going to the Christmas market in Lindau. We were surprised to learn that the place was built in the 1350s, and has been a restaurant since the 1500s. The tradition lives on, the food was amazing. We had a Wiener Schnitzel, a Pork Roast, and Kaiserschmarrn. Apart from the food, we were taken care of quite nicely by Nicole! The service was as good as our dishes. All around a great restaurant, I would highly recommend it and we will definitely come back when we’re in Lindau again.

We had dinner in the small restaurant on the ground floor. The seating was quite tight and the tables were also very small. Within a few minutes the restaurant was packed. Nevertheless, we had a very nice evening at Engel, as the service was simply great and kept the hustle and bustle under control with remarkable composure and a lot of skill. A mistake in the kitchen (the meat had received too much heat...) was also remedied professionally and friendly. The price/performance ratio is consistent and unmeasured, certainly for Lindau conditions. The wine list is clear but still well sorted. Our wine cooler had to be placed on a neighboring table due to the small table, but that wasn't a problem for either the service or the other guests. In short: it was nice and tasty, thank you very much!

When we asked for a free seat, we were turned away very rudely because the restaurant was full. The employee didn't even think it was necessary to look at one. It seemed to us as if the restaurant didn't need to be friendly to potential new customers.

Because of the good reviews, we wanted to test the restaurant and sat outside. The waitress noticed us but rushed past us. They also didn't respond to my inquiry as to whether we could order something. I am aware that staff are harder to get than a customer, but being ignored for 20 minutes - even if the restaurant was busy - is outrageous. We then got up and went to another restaurant.

A cozy restaurant where we immediately felt at home. Everything is lovingly prepared and very clean. Our onion roast was excellent and the Kaiserschmarrn was a poem. Highly recommended! We had reserved a table outside, but then had to wait a few minutes. You sit comfortably in an alley in the old town. We were served very professionally and warmly by Nicole and Andy. The food was great and came very quickly. For me one of the best restaurants on the island in Lindau, we will definitely be back!

We had a very nice stay at Restaurant Engel. We had the schnitzel and the Seibling as a dish. But both delicious. In addition, the service was extremely polite. We can only recommend the store!

Warning: tip added to the bill without telling you! Reassured by the good ratings of this establishment, we went there for dinner. The meal went well, although the dishes were not exceptional. It was when asking for the bill that things got out of hand. The waiter did not bring us the bill, unlike the tables next to us occupied by Germans, but directly the credit card terminal. At the time, I didn't think twice and paid. Then it seemed to us that it was a little expensive compared to what we had ordered. I then asked the waiter for the bill and I felt that he was embarrassed and I saw him talking to his colleague about it. Then, I requested several times for this invoice which was slow in coming. Once on the table, I noticed that it was partly damp, as if by chance at the precise place where I was billed for the tip, and as a result the line was erased. I have a hard time thinking that it's a coincidence. I find this “forced tipping” process bordering on dishonesty and I even wonder if it is legal? Unless I'm mistaken, it seems to me that in Germany, as in France, service is included in restaurants and tipping is therefore at the customer's discretion. We travel a lot and are in the habit, unless there is an incident, of systematically leaving a tip. If we had not noticed that the amount charged was abnormal, we would probably have left a few euros on the table while you had already charged a tip yourself without telling us... In addition, looking at the other customer photos , we find a photo of an invoice on which no tip is charged: it is therefore according to the "head of the customer"!!! Mr. or Madam restaurateur, this way of proceeding does not honor you...

Because of the good reviews we decided to visit the restaurant. Unfortunately we cannot share the good rating. We had grilled pork chops, unfortunately they were very "firm" or tough. The atmosphere outside was quite uncomfortable due to the large crowds and the service was slightly overwhelmed and, in our opinion, not very organized.

Absolute arrogance! Wanted to make a reservation outside for 4 people (business lunch). Estimated turnover 320 to 350 euros. Were not welcome. Instead, cross the border to Vorarlberg. As a Lindau you have to be ashamed to have such a restaurant. It confirms my opinion of the island. Just don't set foot on it while the tourists are clogging up everything.

Chosen at random and pleasantly surprised. On the one hand, it is well attended, but anyone who comes spontaneously has to wait, even if they improvise skillfully. Better reserve. Very nice service, friendly, with a warm charm and at eye level. You have to bring time. But that should be easy, the building is beautiful and the location in the old town promises variety. We liked the food. Good, local quality and selection, nicely arranged and not convenient from what I could see. Fairly priced. Not a given for a tourist place and for us a successful end to our visit to the island.

We ate here last year and the Wiener Schnitzel was excellent. This year we were unlucky with the service. The two of us were seated at a table of 4 with other guests, not perfect but okay. After 10 minutes we were finally able to order, the lady took half the order, the phone rang, she disappeared, after 10 more minutes the lady came and took the orders from the other guests, she ignored us. We then got up and left, sorry but you don't have to put up with this bad service

The food was delicious. One time we ordered shrimp, fish, fried potatoes, and French fries. It was a delicious restaurant. I recommend it. The food was beautiful. I had it by the lake.

We ordered dessert. I do not recommend. The portion was small and tasting bad. Also waitress did not care to even ask how it was tasting. Meanwhile other tables are asked. When I had meal earlier at this place it was also tasting way better than those desserts. If you will not serve tasty dessert, do not put it in the menu.

We ate two excellent meals within a week. One time, pork cordon bleu and roast pork with dumplings, the second time, veal cordon bleu and Wiener schnitzel. The cordon bleu and the schnitzel are among the best versions we have ever eaten. Both very juicy. The potato cucumber salad with it was also simply delicious. On both evenings, every table was occupied and there were already guests standing in front of the restaurant to take a free table, but the service staff were still very friendly and concerned about good service. A clear recommendation for this house :)

10 out of 10 or 5 out of 5! We went to the Gast- u. Bierstube Engel in Lindau today and we really, really enjoyed it! Advice, service, drinks and food were simply top 🤩. As lovers of Austrian and Italian wine, we received great advice here and were treated to fantastic food and good wines from the Lake Constance region! We'll definitely come back 😊. We had schnitzel and baked meat, both very good. The service was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is nice and rustic, we particularly liked the space in the bay window with a bit of a view.

Super great atmosphere, in the heart of the island. The veal schnitzel was well prepared, and with an Aug. Light the whole thing was rounded off perfectly.
