The value for money here isn't quite right anymore. The service was very friendly. The food, however, was poorly seasoned, or even unseasoned, and not very good value for money. It used to be a good restaurant, but it desperately needs a modern renovation.

Die Steaks sind super zart und saftig, auf den Punkt gebraten, das Brot dazu sehr lecker, ebenso die Ofenkartoffel. Vorweg gab es einen Salatteller, sehr frisch und knackig. Das Restaurant ist sehr zu empfehlen. Würde ich in Essen wohnen, wäre ich sehr häufig dort Gast. 10 von 10 Punkten!

Block House food – disappointingly disorganized and weak in the kitchen I have been a regular guest in Block House restaurants throughout Germany for over 30 years. However, what I experienced in Essen on May 10, 2025 was a low point - for the first time I was really disappointed. An event took place at Kennedyplatz that evening. The terrace was full of guests, mostly drinking and listening to the music. Inside, maybe 30% of the tables were occupied. Nevertheless, chaos reigned. Our online reservation couldn't be found - the receptionist acted as if there were no seats left. Only after some persuasion did we get a table. The restaurant remained largely empty throughout the evening. The service was overwhelmed, rushed and almost impossible to reach. Our waiter tried hard and was friendly, but clearly stressed by the chaos outside. The promised garlic butter was never delivered. When asked, no one could be reached - neither by a show of hands nor by direct address. The receptionist stood idly at the entrance and didn't respond to anything. About the food: My companion was satisfied, my food was unacceptable. The steak ordered “medium” was almost raw on the inside – somewhere between “blue” and “rare”. The baked potato was hot on the outside and ice cold on the inside. The side dishes such as spinach and mushrooms, on the other hand, were extremely hot. Here too: no one available. After 20 minutes I finally managed to call the waiter to the table. Instead of taking care of it straight away, I first got into an unnecessary discussion about what “medium” looks like – completely inappropriate in this situation. I then kindly but clearly explained to him the difference between medium and almost raw. The main course was canceled - a fair offer that I accepted because my trust in the kitchen and the process was gone. After the completely unsuccessful main course, I didn't want any more food. I had lost my appetite. Bottom line: A completely disorganized evening, poor communication, inattentive service and a meal that had nothing to do with Block House's standards. I have rarely been so disappointed. Two stars – nothing more can be achieved this evening.

Came by by chance. Got space straight away. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Ambiance is ok, but I think the tables should be more spaced apart. I don't have to hear the neighbors' conversations quite so clearly. Food was very good. My steak could have been a little more tender. Otherwise everything is perfect.

Why, as a guest, I have to look into the open kitchen while eating and then be scolded by the restaurant manager with the words “I understand you” is a mystery to me. Very tasty burgers “without a lid”. The bread tastes great, the burger patties are fresh and juicy. One more thing I would like: a delicious homemade burger sauce for dipping. Then it would be perfect. 👌

Food: Great as always Service: Sour Cream, as has often been the case, was only brought to the table after "repeated" requests, otherwise it would have been 5 stars, but always friendly! Ambiance: When the place is full, it's more like a pub... Quite loud, but the place can't help it (maybe plan for sound suppression when setting up and take that into account)

Food: Great Service: Basically okay, but the greeting with a "First of all, good day, please wait" was a little immoral. This gives the impression that people are less excited about meeting new customers. It's understandable that you have a lot to do, but that doesn't justify this attitude. The prices: Well, for such small portions of steaks weighing 280 grams, I could actually fry something at home for a better price-performance ratio. The quality of the food depends on this. Overall ok, but could be better.

My first visit to a block house was in Hamburg in the 80s. Since then I have been eating in one of these formidable restaurants every now and then, today for the first time in my hometown. It was "as usual": VERY tasty food - even the baked potato, herb butter and sour cream are remarkable - and decent drinks. Plus outstanding service. But even if you've known the quality for a long time, the "American Tenderloin" is always a pleasure, and my wife doesn't see it any differently. But I have one suggestion for improvement: please also serve Pils on tap in larger glasses...

Kellner nett - freundlich und schnell. Wir saßen an der offen gestalteten Küche. Das Essen war alles pro Portion vorgekocht und verpackt aus der Kühlung nur erhitzt. Das Fleisch ebenfalls portioniert und dann gegrillt. Die Portionen war sehr übersichtlich auf dem Teller. Vorspeise Bruscetta waren 2 Scheiben Baguette Brot und ein Haufen ungewürzter Tomatenstücke. Die Möhren Ingwer Suppe war gut. 3x Vorspeise 2 x Steak 2 x Hähnchen gegrillt 4 Getränke = 130 € Insgesamt - schade - wir kommen ehr nicht wieder

Not recommended – poor value for money and questionable hygiene. The visit was a complete disappointment. The portions are tiny for the high price; you pay a lot and go home hungry. Even worse: the food comes straight out of the packaging instead of being freshly prepared. The open kitchen turns out to be a disadvantage because you can see everything - unfortunately including how the meat is handled with your bare hands. No gloves etc.! This is simply unhygienic and unacceptable. The service was the only bright spot: attentive drinks service and quick clearing of empty plates. For us it was the first and last time!

We stayed at Motel One. This restaurant is located 1 minute away on the square. It was busy but luckily there was still a spot at the bar. We had a delicious meal. I get the rib eye 350gr. Nice big piece of meat. Prices are in good proportion.

We have been here very often. Every time we visited we were always greeted warmly and served very attentively. Despite the somewhat noisy atmosphere (on a Saturday evening), the service staff tries to fulfill your every wish. The price-performance ratio is right, even if the filet mignon we ordered could have been a little more tender. The starter salads always taste very fresh and crunchy. We'd love to come back :-)

There were three of us... Very friendly reception Our “service man” was very quick and incredibly friendly. The advice was great. The steaks and all the side dishes were great and sufficient. If you're really looking for criticism you could mention the loud and somewhat annoying heating. We'll be back LG

Lunch time Rain outside the store was full. 5 min waiting time at the door table between 2 other tables very loud atmosphere service was overwhelmed with the number of guests when asked manager said that that was ok it was because of the weather I have a different opinion it took a long time for the usual procedures to take place was able to start, is that standard? I went to Block House again after a long time and was disappointed with my rump steak. Despite the fat edge, it tasted very dry. My wife and daughter both had sirloin steak, but one was at least twice as thick as the other. Unfortunately we didn't say it straight away. Afterwards the waiter just said: everything is cut the same here. He was clearly unimpressed by the tip.

Unser Onkel hat uns zu seinem Geburtstag ( 82) am 27.12.2024 eingeladen. Nachdem wir nur kurz auf seinen Geburtstag bei der Bedienung zu sprechen kamen, wurde ihm gratuliert, kurz danach kam Sekt vom Haus mit Wunderkerze. Es wurde sogar ein Foto gemacht. Das war schon toll. Unser bestelltes Essen kam zügig obwohl es sehr voll war. Es war hervorragend zubereitet, keiner von uns 6 Personen hatte was auszusetzen. Zum Abschluss kam unsere Bedienung noch mit einer riesigen Glückwunschkarte die das Foto enthielt und sämtliche Unterschriften aller Bedienungen. Das hat unseren Onkel fast umgehauen. Vielen Dank dafür.

For the prices quoted you can get both more tender and more flavorful meat elsewhere. The quality is not bad. It just doesn't live up to the prices and, above all, its own praises. The atmosphere is a bit old-fashioned, but absolutely fine. The staff is very friendly and also very accommodating. Unfortunately, my starter was served at the same time as the main course, so I was unlikely to be able to enjoy both while they were still warm. Responsibility was proactively taken and the starter was removed from the bill. I didn't have the embarrassment of possibly complaining about it. Exemplary!

We were there last Friday with a table reservation, unfortunately 40 minutes early. 5-6 people were already waiting in the entrance area. After 10 minutes of disregard, the service manager finally managed to graciously give us a table (before he had looked frantically at the reservation book, walked into the restaurant about 10 times, looked at the book again). The waiter (I mean: Sven) was super friendly and nice and served us well. The food: Burger, fries and mini salads, €17.90, absolutely fried, portion for one child. Then we were asked to remember that the reservation was over!! A restaurant, twice in a lifetime: the 1st and the last time!!! I'd rather spend my money somewhere else!

We have eaten here for several years now, during our visit to the Christmas market in Essen, and it is always great! Great food, friendly and well priced! Tip: making a reservation for Saturday evening is always difficult, so go for lunch! You don't have to make a reservation at 1 p.m., there is always room and the steak is just as good! Then all the time for the Christmas market…

Dessert in particular takes forever.

Very tasty food! However, the service is a bit busy, which makes ordering take a little longer. But it is definitely recommended to eat right next to the square where the Christmas market is.

Sehr zuvorkommender Service, Speisen gut bis sehr gut, Steak Medium statt Medium rear. Dafür einen Wein aufs Haus - sehr sehr großzügig.

I would strongly recommend this restaurant. They serve perfect cut meat with a perfect flamed grilled taste. The meals in portion are more than enough! A big recommendation is the garlic bread, I would suggest to take an extra piece of garlic bread instead of the fries or a stuffed potatoe with sour cream. We were helped bij Sebastian, very nice and friendly guy!

We were at this restaurant on 11/26/24. We were greeted very politely and escorted to our seat after a few minutes! Then our order was taken. Mr. Gabrijel explained every single order well and also gave tips! I've never experienced anything like this before. I was speechless with how enthusiastically Mr. Gabrijel served us! 5 stars to Mr. Gabrijel!

The food and beer are both nice

I was visiting Essen for two days and ate there twice: once I had beef fillet with vegetables, once I had ribeye with salad. The meat was great and cooked perfectly. The staff were very attentive. I particularly liked the fact that you can deselect something on the menu and add something else. For example, I didn't want potatoes, but I wanted something different. You then only pay for what you want to eat. Since we also have BLOCK HOUSE in Stuttgart, I will also eat there. Thanks for the positive experience. (Since there is a lot of begging in the pedestrian zone in Essen, I wouldn't sit outside.)

Never again! My steak was so chewy, Potato over cooked and a bit burn. Choice of Salad even more confused when it was included and I wanted extra sidedish, but i can only choose to pay extra for side-dish and lost my salad!? Or I have to pay more!? staff wasn’t friendly to be asked for explanation the third time so let it be! Btw 70 Euro for 2 is a big expensive for expensive we got. I would consider it more average, not just a nice dining meal.

Were there on a Tuesday afternoon. It was very empty and Sebastian, the waiter, was very attentive. All questions were answered and all requests were addressed. The meat was medium+. Perfect and delicious. It was my first, but certainly not last, visit.

Jedes billige Steak vom Discounter würde ich diesem Laden vorziehen. So ein mieses Steak habe ich selten essen müssen. Die Folienkartoffel war ein Matschklumpen und der Kellner war nicht zu verstehen weil er zu schnell genuschelt hat. Was für eine Enttäuschung...nie wieder hier!

We were visiting Essen for the first time and looking for a good restaurant. We chose this place because of the good reviews. The steaks are perfectly cooked. Price is just normal for a good piece of steak. Location is just in the city center.

The Block House Essen is a good and cozy restaurant with very friendly service staff. Due to its American origins, it was exactly the right atmosphere for the visit after the GFL Bowl, the final game of American football in Germany, in the stadium on Hafenstrasse. Food was very tasty, everything was perfect, so 5 points everywhere…

Had a nice dinner here with colleagues. The rib eye was really tasty and the sides including the option for bruschetta were good as well. Safe bet for dinner.

Lamb steak with spinach and potatoes was a good composition.

There is still room for improvement here. I order the tenderloin from the steak menu. The menu says “high and thick cut” and I note that I attach great importance to having it served that way. Especially given the ambitious price. The service lady was very nice until then, replied that it was a natural product and that you couldn't promise that... I'm sorry, what? Then why is it written like that on the map???? So I asked if it's just the goal with "high and thick cut"? She couldn't answer that and asked whether I wanted to order it or not. Very unprofessional. If something is advertised, you should deliver it to the guest. It came as it had to come... flat as a flounder. Far from tall/thick. Meat quality was ultimately mediocre. Unfortunately, the grilled medium order was almost well done.

Visited Restaurant during a visit to Essen. It was a Saturday night, and there was a queue to get in. It was around 10 min wait, but we got a table. The service was decent. I can't fault it on a busy night. Our food and drinks were delivered without a wait and enjoyable. The burger was lovely, the meat wasn't dry like some burgers and it came loaded with cheese and tomato. Atmosphere was nice and the toilets were clean and maintained. I'd recommend it, it was a nice evening out on the last evening of our trip.

A very, very nice restaurant with a great ambience. The food is very delicious and is offered at a fair price. Making a reservation was easy and quick, and it wasn't a problem to get to our table in half an hour. Unfassbar sowas ist mir noch nie passiert Ich habe insgesamt 99.90 bezahlt was an sich ja ok ist ich gebe 100 Euro ab und sage ich möchte den Rest nicht wieder haben, natürlich dachte ich mir dabei nichts da muss ich mir von dem Kellner anhören 10 Cent brauch ich nicht davon kann ich mir auch nichts kaufen .. legt die 10 Cent hin und sagt Eckelhaft so Menschen . Sowas ist mir noch nie passiert sowas undenkbares . Niemals würde ich dieses Restaurant jemanden empfehlen.

Ein Hund, der nicht einmal an den Tisch ran kommt wird des Lokals verwiesen, während andere Gäste mit den Füßen auf den Sitzen haben... ein Kompliment an Ihre "Managerin", die sich auf Hygiene-Vorschriften beruft und diese absolut genervt und unfreundlich vermittelt.

It’s overrated. The service was just okay, and the manager was too busy to properly address our request to replace the steak, which we believed was overcooked — they disagreed. Honestly, the onion soup was odd, lacking caramelization, and the beef tartare was mixed with wine vinegar. Just imagine that.
