Very quaint and cozy, friendly service, it's nice to have breakfast there.

It used to be an absolute bank. Guess Corona wiped out the store, now it is under the management of those who also run the Q21 and T.R.U.D.E. manage and take responsibility. The prices have risen, the food no longer feels as rich and tasty, but it is still good. The craft beer that is served is delicious. There probably won't be a return to the status of 2010, but I can still give it 3.5 points.

Actually you can recommend the place, but not the food. The goulash soup, which in my opinion was overpriced, was by no means even remotely reminiscent of this one. The schnitzels had died twice - they were bone dry! Definitely not a pleasure!

A very nice cafe with delicious food. The prices are a bit high, but still affordable. The currywurst was very tasty as was the lemonade. Definitely worth a visit.

Very nice restaurant with delicious food, perfect connection to the S-Bahn

The atmosphere is still the same as it was 30 years ago. Great location above the railway tracks of the Rübenkamp S-Bahn. The audience is still as mixed as it has been over the years. Under the new owners the quality has now returned to its old level. Couldn't help but eat the obligatory farmer's breakfast here and it was perfect as always. The other dishes were all great, and there was also an appropriate selection for our vegetarian group member. It's great that you've found your way back to your old glory under the new owners.

When I moved to Hamburg, I lived not far from the chess café. We used to visit here relatively often. In summer you can sit outside and enjoy a cool drink. A public viewing is offered for the European Championships or World Cup. The restaurant has a long history and has been around forever. You can see the old charm inside and that's what makes it special in the end. The employees, who are always friendly and take their time with the guests and don't seem stressed, even though the restaurant is still busy even on weekend evenings around 10 p.m. The range of food and drinks is great. I love home cooking and this is the right place for that. I will definitely come back often, Schachcafé is never a disappointment! 🙂

Simple but delicious cuisine at fair prices. Portions perfect.

We visit the restaurant regularly. The Barmbeker beer is at the top of my rating :) one of the best in Hamburg. Delicious food and friendly staff are part of it.

All in all, a solid restaurant, but it used to be a little more familiar and personal. Today you can tell that you are part of a larger restaurant chain. The location is unbeatable and it's great to sit outside in the summer. In my opinion, the price/performance was better in the past - today even for the prices that are unfortunately standard on the market - the portion size is partly manageable (and I'm a normal eater).

Food and drink and the service was great

The schnitzel with hunter sauce was 2 schnitzels, probably deep fried. The fried potatoes were neither hot nor crispy and didn't seem like they were “fresh from the pan”. Very large portions. Good service.

The breakfast is simple, but everything you need is there. It's a shame: the menu only offers Maasdam cheese. Luckily, they brought us Gouda. We were happy, but the waitress said they were out of Maasdam cheese and almost no one liked it. Then I asked myself, why not just have Gouda?

The shop is nice and has a fairly large terrace. I can imagine it being nice to sit outside in the summer. The food didn't impress me with its quality, and the cakes weren't particularly tasty either. I think the shop has seen better days.

Was here a lot as a teenager. Not much has changed. There are still fries "full" Very cozy, decent food, decent prices, attentive staff. Well attended even during the week. People also like to meet here to play chess or cards. Keep it up :-)

Full of fries - a classic for over 30 years

Unfortunately I had to give one star less for the ambience. Unfortunately, the seat is not screwed on and when we told the service staff, the answer was that we know that. It could have been repaired. My colleague pinched her finger. Service is quick and responds to requests. The food is good and the portions are good size. Update: unfortunately the food was cold and dry last time. Unfortunately, the service staff had no interest in the complaint either. It's a shame, I actually liked the place 😕😞

Food was great, service was attentive, friendly and very enthusiastic. Unfortunately, the sun burns half your face off while you eat. The windows are high enough that you should install a sun protection film above them. The noise level was so high that as soon as you were outside again you appreciated the peace and quiet again and your clothes smelled like a chip shop after your stay. Would definitely come back, but if necessary ask for another place and plan to take a shower afterwards.

I really liked the schnitzel at lunch. Price-performance was great. These fresh juices with elderberry, mint, lemon etc. are also really great. Great location, close to the S-Bahn.

The chess café directly at the Rübenkamp S-Bahn station is pure enjoyment every time. From the atmosphere to the staff, everything is perfect. I'll be back.

It was really nice...the staff were all super nice and attentive! The breakfast was very tasty and plentiful... every wish was catered for! We'll be back!

Delicious breakfast, nice conditions and fast service

The food was okay and the service was very slow. It's a shame, the space and atmosphere are actually very inviting. The bottom line is that it's an average performance.

We have already celebrated our birthdays here three times (we were in the "Big Easy" in the Fuhle a lot before Corona) and were always allowed to decorate the tables (Raffaelo's, Mon Chery's, streamers en mass, ...), plus The fact that the restaurant is barrier-free is because my wife arrives here in an electric wheelchair), which would be so easy in the Big Easy (unfortunately no longer). Greetings to the team from the guy who "...goes to drink whiskey now...".

Great restaurant with a nice atmosphere, friendly staff. The cake gets five stars, the kitchen, let's say three stars with Goodwill. The only real drawback is that it is a bit drafty and rather cool, could be a bit warmer.

Were there for Christmas dinner - the shed is beautifully decorated but there seems to be pure chaos in the kitchen I myself am a restaurateur and can understand a lot of things, but I was served a cold burger in a rather rude manner with cold, hard bacon, a dry meatball, 1 leaf of lettuce (nothing was spared) and a thick slice of cucumber. On the whole, my dish alone was a smooth one 1/10 on the schnitzel or some other dishes I leave my opinion to myself and to keep it short Not recommended, happy holidays to all of you :) Fun. It's better to have a dessert otherwise you'll just be stupidly asked "why not?"

The hut is burning here. Before 6 p.m. you can also find a place for 4 without a reservation. Things get tricky from 6 p.m. I've been there twice now and had to clear the table. Nice for the host, not nice for me and my friends. Next time I have reserved! Let's see how long we can stay then. Update: *Table reserved* for 3:45 p.m. At 5:15 p.m. we informed that “our” table had been reserved elsewhere from 6 p.m. With a significant pulse, I moved “upstairs” and stayed until 8:50 p.m. Even if there was free schnapps... you have to be able to afford that as a restaurant. The chess café can obviously do it. Although I actually like it, I reduce the ambience to 1*, I couldn't rate the food differently because I ate somewhere else, my appetite came too late for the short stay.

Everything really good ✌️. It's just a bit crowded at times and therefore not particularly suitable for chilling out 😉😉😉 But you just enjoy going there.

We have been here again for years. The ambience still impresses us very much. Unfortunately our food wasn't that good. I haven't eaten such bad (and cold) fried potatoes in a long time.

Nice, patient and friendly service. Was there for the Christmas party. Half the duck was very tasty. One more dumpling than just one on the plate would be nice. But the portion was definitely enough. The Barmkeker beer tastes very good.

Nice restaurant with friendly service and decent cuisine

Nach vielen Jahren, war ich mal wieder dort. Natürlich gibt es die Speisen nicht mehr, die man früher dort gegessen hat, dennoch ist das Essen nach wie vor sehr lecker. Das Schachcafe hat NICHT an seinem Charme und Ambiente verloren. Ich habe mich sehr wohl und willkommen gefühlt.

Been going to this place since 2003, when I came in as an exchange student. 20 years later and this place is still as nice and as german rustic as ever! The staff are friendly, food is good and being true to its name, you can watch people playing chess.

The food represents a good price/performance ratio. No fine dining, but no high prices either. In summer, the beer garden right next to the S-Bahn station is really great and very well attended. In any case, the kitchen is better than the previous tenant (apparently had to close due to the Corona crisis). The tenant is the same one who runs the Q21. All in all, really nice and great atmosphere. The only point of criticism: it is very loud inside due to the conversation. We recommend making reservations at the end of the day! Can be done quickly online via OpenTable!

Das Schach-Café ist immer einen Besuch wert. Wir waren mit mehreren Leuten, Kindern und Hunden dort. Das Team ist sehr freundlich und aufmerksam und hat uns alle rundum gut versorgt!

In a relaxed atmosphere with very friendly service, 3 hours passed far too quickly.

Good home-style food in a cozy atmosphere. I had ordered roast beef and was disappointed to find very little meat under a mountain of fried potatoes. The service was decidedly friendly, the food for our group's tables came very differently, but empty plates were removed from the table, even though many were still busy eating.

Delicious currywurst and a Barmbeker Dubkel, it couldn't be better.

Interesting atmosphere. Good, friendly service. I usually eat the Wiener Schnitzel with fries here. But the fried potatoes with fried eggs are also recommended. Lunch is available. Gladly again.

We went to the chess cafe twice. The breakfast is good, the service was very nice and attentive. It is very loud there in the evenings. The service was inattentive and was rarely encountered over the course of the evening. The food we ordered consisted mostly of convenience products. Too bad!

....the hospitality of the staff is missing

Hatte mich hier mit 3 Freuden verabredet, war nach sehr langer Zeit mal wieder da. Essen ging so,bei meiner Essen Bestellung wurde was vergessen... Bedienung war OK. Aber den Platz den wir bekommen hatten, dort war es so laut das wir uns den ganzen Abend anschreien mussten und den Abend deshalb beendet hatten. Wir werden nicht mehr wiederkommen, da wir uns auch unterhalten möchten, wenn wir uns schon treffen zum Essen. Aber vielleicht ist Freitagabend auch der falsche Zeitpunkt, aber wenn man arbeitet hat man meistens nur das Wochenende.

Immer wenn wir nach Hamburg fahren ist ein Besuch im Schachcafe ein muss. Sehr gutes Essen, freundlicher Service und angemessene Preise, ob klein oder groß für jeden was dabei. Es hat einen eigenen Charme der einen noch den einst gewesenen Bahnhof erkennen lässt. Wir lieben dieses Lokal. 😊

Unfortunately it is quite loud here, but the background noise is not a problem for me. The farmer's breakfast is good, it filled me up. At first I was probably a little early between ten and half past ten, the farmer's breakfast is served from 12 o'clock, so I left and came back later. The service is friendly, but on a Sunday it can take a while to get served if there are a lot of guests in the restaurant.

Always happy to have lunch or dinner there, schnitzel, fries, simply good in this area.

The Schach Café has been around for a long time, but unfortunately not much has changed in all that time. The food is good, the ambience is certainly a matter of taste.
