Bachstelze in Erfurt

Even though we'd been planning to visit the Bachstelze for a long time, we only recently managed to visit it. The warm hospitality of Maria, Matthias, and their guest chef Lucki Maurer was exceptional. The magical ambiance in the garden and restaurant is so lovingly decorated and cozy, you immediately feel at home. The fantastic menu, the wine pairing, the service, and the atmosphere were all top-notch! We've rarely experienced a culinary event of such a high yet informal standard. The long journey was more than worth it, and we'll definitely be back!

Great entertainment with great food! A wonderful break from everyday life!

Maria is the Pippi Longstocking of German haute cuisine, where head pirate Matthias, the perfect host, helps guests navigate this magical world. To describe the ambiance of the dining room: no dress code, anything goes – anyone who decides to show up in a motorcycle suit, a diving suit, or a fairytale costume almost threatens to blend in with the background. The food is as lovingly colorful and creative as the interior. Countless courses, decided on according to the day's events, composed with every possible means according to the chef's motto. The ingredients are super fresh, much of it comes from the restaurant's own garden, and if the caterpillar Absolem had served the salad, no one would have been surprised. My wine pairing was "vegetarian" for drivers and consisted of juices, extracts, and flavors of all kinds, and I didn't miss a thing. If you appreciate good food and can forgo conformity, you should venture to Maria and Matthias and let yourself be enchanted by the Bachstelze's culinary adventure land!

I've never experienced such a wonderful evening in my 66 years. Especially since I was also celebrating my birthday. Dear Maria, thank you for this evening, keep it up! We'll be back.

It was truly amazing. We'll never forget the tingling of the fizzy powder in the horseradish cream accompanied by beetroot. And we had by far the best asparagus soup ever. Of course, the fish and meat were cooked to perfection, as expected. The ambiance and the beautifully staged atmosphere immediately made you forget everyday life and focus on enjoyment. If my wallet could allow it, I'd go back every week.

5 stars – You can't get more than that! A culinary hit! At the Bachstelze, you feel welcome from the very first moment – ​​as if you were a guest of good friends, only with better food. Chef Maria conjures up little masterpieces on your plate, where even the chickweed deserves a round of applause. From appetizer to dessert: simply heavenly! You can taste that the food isn't just cooked here, but composed with love. And then Matthias – head waiter, host, and entertainer all in one. Yes, all this comes at a price. But as the saying goes: quality has its value – and every euro is well spent here. It was an impressive experience with great weather. It was a cozy garden party. Even though a certain, not insignificant, group of attendees appeared to be close friends, which was a bit distracting at times. The event wasn't exactly inexpensive as a guest. We had the impression that we were paying, unlike some of the other "friends." But it was still a really great event.

The food is excellent, but the service, especially when paying cashless, is poor, and you're treated very rudely. In today's digital world, that's incomprehensible to me. If you want to pay cashless, you should do it with Amazon, was the answer I got. Otherwise, an idyllic beer garden with a sunset included.

We went to the Bachstelze for Easter brunch. We were greeted and served very courteously by Matthias and the entire team. Maria has conjured up many small creations in the kitchen, suitable for the season, for the eyes and the palate. Matthias presented a very suitable wine pairing with lots of background information. The loving design of the indoor and outdoor areas really appealed to us and shows how much passion the hosts have. The end was very informal and rounded off our visit. We are already looking forward to the next culinary trip to the Wagtail.

Excellent meal with a disappointing finish Location & ambience: The restaurant is in a somewhat remote location with no designated parking spaces. Due to a nearby football match, all of the street parking spaces were full, so we had to walk. The inner courtyard impresses with a rustic but lovingly designed atmosphere. In the interior, modern design meets playful, rustic elements. The seats at the chef's table are not particularly comfortable, especially for guests with knee problems. The toilets are outside the building, but that wasn't a problem. A friendly dog ​​is on site, but it is not allowed to be petted - this will be pointed out directly. Food & Drinks: The evening's culinary experience was at the highest level. Ms. Groß's kitchen impressed with sophisticated flavor compositions and perfectly coordinated dishes. The portion sizes were reasonable and made for a filling experience. One point of criticism, however, is the unclear drink prices: the aperitif outside had no obvious price information, and the drink prices were only shown on a small, easy-to-miss board inside. More transparent pricing would be desirable. Service: The service staff was attentive, friendly and always tried to refill water and briefly explain each course. However, for more detailed questions, the manager was always referred to. The host, Mathias, initially appeared professional, but became more reserved after we decided on the small wine accompaniment. Guests with larger wine accompaniments received noticeably more attention. Price-performance: We were surprised with a bill of almost 600 euros for the evening. While the quality of the menu justified its price, the overall experience didn't seem consistently up to that standard. The repeated requests for tips for the staff were particularly unpleasant - a voluntary gesture should not be demanded. Unpleasant incident: Unfortunately, the successful evening was subsequently overshadowed by an incident. On the way home, my partner received a call from Mathias around midnight, who sharply accused us of stealing a book. Without any opportunity for clarification, the conversation ended abruptly with the announcement that we would be contacted in writing. The next morning, after WE tried to clarify this again by phone, it turned out that it was a mistake - other guests had stolen the book, which was seen on the camera footage. However, there was no appropriate apology or immediate call back when the incident was discovered. Conclusion: The excellent cuisine had the potential for an unforgettable evening. Unfortunately, the unprofessional behavior of the host left a negative impression that made us refrain from visiting again.

It was by far the best evening we've had in a long time. The food was incredibly tasty and the presentation throughout the evening was unique. All in all an unforgettable experience.

Nach einigen Monaten des Vergessens muss ich mich dann doch zu Wort melden. Ich hatte meiner Frau einen "Roadtrip" nach Weimar mit einem Besuch bei der doch so hoch dekorierten und TV-präsenten Maria Groß geschenkt. Reservierung erfolgte mit dem Hinweis auf die Geschmacksrichtung "Vegetarisch" meiner Frau. Da die Reservierung von langer Hand geplant war, habe ich einige Tage davor diese (inclusive Vegatriervariante) nochmal per Mail bestätigten lassen. Alles klasse. Soviel zu den Vorarbeiten. Könnte jetzt noch lange ausführen über das Drumherum möchte mich hier aber auf die Kernthemen konzentrieren. Fakt ist, die vegetarische Variante wurde wohl vergessen. Es war daran zu erkennen, dass meine normales Menü WESENTLICH früher serviert wurde als die Veggievariante. Auf freundliche Rückfrage bei der Servicekraft wurde es zu einem gewissen Zeitpunkt etwas ruppiger was dann darin endete, dass die Servicekraft (Ehemann von Frau Groß) meine Frau über den gesamten Tisch auf übelste beschimpfte sodaß auch die mit am Tisch sitzen Gäste pikiert schauten bar der Schroffheit der Servicekraft. Das Essen für den nicht Vegetarier war OK für den Vegetarier galt an dem Abend das Prinzip, tüchtig Beilagen machen auch satt. Für den gleichen Preis wohlgemerkt. Die Verabschiedung war dann auch dementsprechend unterkühlt jedoch noch mit Hinweis von Frau Groß, dass die Servicekraft ihr Gemahl wäre und sie sowieso alles mitbekommen habe. Dann müssen da aber wohl Mikrofone installiert sein! Tage davor war wir ein einem ungehypten Restaurant in Weimar essen. Kein Vergleich, dieser Abend hatte unseren Aufenthalt in Weimar und Umgebung gerettet. Warum den zweiten Stern? Sonst liest es ja keiner.

- Essen sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig - Alles sehr überteuert - Kam mir vor wie eine Verkaufsveranstaltung - Am Anfang noch freundlich Personal zum Ende zu wird es immer ruhiger -Für acht Personen wurde 1500 knapp bezahlt und man hatte noch sehr großen Hunger -Hund lief zwischen Küche und Gaststätte umher - Gaststätte zieht sehr schmuddelig aus es könnte mal wieder sauber gemacht werden, richtig - Wie manche eine sehr gute Bewertung abgeben können, kann man leider nicht nachvollziehen. Kann dieses Restaurant leider nicht weiter empfehlen.

Es war so wunderbar. Ambiente und Location einzigartig, im Vintage Stil. Eines der besten Fine-Dining die wir je erlebt. 16 Gänge haben wir bekommen. Wir kommen wieder.

Leider kann ich die letzten zwei negativen Bewertungen gar nicht bestätigen. Wir waren schon mehrfach zum Essen und haben auch meinen 40zigsten dort gefeiert. Es war jedes Mal ein Fest der Sinne und ein absoluter Topservice, in perfekt, gemütlichem Ambiente. Eine Empfehlung für alle, die Fine Dining in lockerem Stil, ohne Dresscode und Allüren genießen wollen. Es ist natürlich nichts für Spießer und Möchtegern-Gourmetexperten, die auf Oberflächlichkeiten stehen.

Unfortunately I can't confirm the recent negative reviews. We've had dinner several times and also celebrated my 40th there. Every time it was a feast for the senses and an absolute top service, in a perfect, cozy atmosphere. A recommendation for everyone who wants to enjoy fine dining in a relaxed style, without dress code or airs. Of course, it's not for philistines and wannabe gourmet experts who like superficialities.

Länger schon möchten wir unseren Eindruck von unserem Erlebnisabend in der Bachstelze formulieren, waren aber unentschlossen, weil etwas zerrissen in der Beurteilung. Was uns jetzt doch veranlasst das zu tun ist die leicht Verärgerung darüber, dass jede „Kritik „, von Matthias stark dementiert wird. Wir sind ein ganz normales Paar und somit niemand von der Konkurrenz, oder sonst jemand, der die Bachstelze in ein schlechtes Licht stellen möchte! Wir hatten uns lange vorgenommen das besondere Angebot der Bachstelze zu erleben und sind im Nachhinein froh es getan zu haben. Auch im Nachhinein betrachtet war alles genau so, wie es beschrieben war, aber wie es sich dann anfühlt ist eben was anderes. Wir fanden das sehr rustikale Ambiente und das Sitzen auf den Barhockern am Durchgang zur Küche nicht gemütlich und die Sache mit dem Hund ist auch nicht unser Ding. Essen und trinken waren im positiven Sinn schon besonders, aber bei so vielen verschiedenen Geschmäckern bleibt nichts in besonderer Erinnerung. Wir hätten gerne schriftlich gehabt was wir gegessen haben.. Über die Getränkebegleitung wurde schon einiges berichtet, gute Weine und gute alkoholfreie Alternativen , aber auch das ist so eine Reizüberflutung, dass es schwer ist etwas davon besonders herauszuschmecken. Unserer Meinung nach wäre auch „weniger -Mehr „ Wir bezahlen gerne für gutes Essen und trinken und wertschätzen die Arbeit aller Beteiligten an diesem Abend, aber es hat schon , aus vorgenannten Gründen,einen fast dekadenten Eindruck hinterlassen ( 600 Euro für 2 Personen)und wir werden zu diesem Format nicht wiederkommen und müssen das leider auch so auch weitergeben, wenn uns jemand fragt wie unser Eindruck war. Das ist natürlich nur unser Fazit und sicherlich ist für andere dieses Konzept genau das Richtige! Wir wünschen dem Bachstelzenteam weiterhin zufriedene Gäste! Keiner kann es allen recht machen und Kritik ist doch grundsätzlich nichts Schlechtes 😉

If you are looking for something extraordinary, you are in the best hands with Maria and Matthias as well as the entire great service team at the Wagtail! We ourselves “arrived” by taxi on our first visit last week; you can also easily get to the Wagtail from Erfurt and elsewhere using the very nearby train. Autolos is highly recommended with the fantastic wine selection and accompaniment (there are 3 variants from “normal to premium”) 🍷 . This is always described in the finest detail by Matthias and always perfectly served and commented on by him or the friendly service. But the selection is also completely alcohol-free. Delicious Grandner water in carafes is always refilled free of charge. The beautifully situated house and the ambience reminded us at the very first moment of Pipi Longstocking's lovely Villa Kunterbunt, but everything just fits together here, fantastically. At the beginning of the menu we had the honor of meeting the sweet 4-legged host Friedrich. He goes very briefly from table to table without bothering you (please don't constantly "pat" him, just say "Hello"), then tells his mistress that it's ready to go and watches the whole thing from a distance all evening with his eyes closed 💤 from his bed and was never seen again... What should you say about food? The wagtail menu is prepared by Maria herself (of course with one or two great kitchen helpers 😅) and is always a surprise. Each course is served with a corresponding explanation. I can hardly count the number and content of the many incredibly tasty small and slightly larger dishes, fantastic👌🏻! When selecting the dishes, great importance is attached to regionality and items from our own garden are also used, which is reflected in the high quality and great taste. The rest (what kind of rest actually 😂?) is regulated by the fantastic optics, a feast for the eyes too 👀. The whole evening is commented on very aptly but not intrusively by dear Matthias, and one or two laughs from the guests 🤭 are inevitable. He is happy to offer a good “nightcap” to choose from on his grocery store. Of course, you should know that the price here is not at the same level as a bratwurst stand, but you can certainly get over that when you enjoy the menu, the drinks and the quality and friendliness of the service staff. Good staff and regional quality have their price 😋. We would like to thank the entire Bachstelze team for this truly unforgettable evening and will definitely come back more than once, even if Erfurt is not always around the corner for us from Bonn. Thanks to Maria that after your and Friedrich's walk we were allowed to take a selfie and sign your book (which, by the way, is inconspicuously available for purchase at the entrance) 😘🫶🏻. We were able to take part in two events in the “Bachstelze” and it was always a great experience. Always happy!!!

We went to the “Barbecue unplugged” event twice and were really excited. Both times we had an unforgettable evening. The hosts are warm, open and very personable. Both the hosts and chefs as well as the guests spread a good mood. The food and the selected wines and drinks are sensationally good. There is something for everyone. Thanks to the small, very tasty portions, you can try many amazing dishes. We will definitely come back, maybe to another event and we are fans!

A fairytale place near Erfurt. You immediately have the feeling of being at home with friends - just a very warm atmosphere. The food is prepared by Maria herself and tastes excellent. And if you're staying in a tiny house on site, this is the perfect cozy place to end the evening. A little vacation from reality :)

It was my first time attending a fine dinner and I have to say, I was very skeptical at first. But this went away very quickly because I noticed how much passion was put into the ambience and the food. It was a really great experience and a very tasty meal and the accompanying drinks were also a pleasure. Even if it is at a higher price level, I would do it again. Highly recommended. I also thought it was great that Maria and Matthias took time for the guests, had conversations with everyone and talked shop about food and drinks. Also a shout out to the very friendly staff. Everyone was there with all their hearts. A successful evening and despite previous concerns, we went home completely full and satisfied.

The food was really great: caviar, lobster, oysters, champagne and so much more together with great craftsmanship really impressed us at the turn of the year - thank you very much! We spent the most beautiful evening of the year in May in the Wagtail having a barbecue under the blooming chestnut! Every course was fun, the atmosphere was great and we had surprises on our tongues and smiles on our faces the whole evening ♥️ Maria Gross simply great 😘 Keep it up!!

We ate at the Bachstelze in October 2024 for a very special 10-course outdoor menu. It was fantastic😇, the food was simply TOP CLASS and we felt very comfortable right from the start and were well looked after at all times. The personal and very warm welcome from Maria and Matthias creates a very warm atmosphere right from the start. The hosts are also open and receptive to matters of the heart, so that for me personally it was a very special, beautiful and moving afternoon. Thank you very much for this perfect day 😇🥰🙏

December 27, 2024: I'm not sure what today's response to my post from 4 years ago means, but I would like to ask again that you spare us from any accusations. There was no “clarified” email from us because we did not do what we were accused of (destroying the outdoor Christmas decorations). We were harshly accused and threatened with the police. Back then, Matthias, I encouraged you to please take this threatened route and bring forward the alleged video recordings. The whole thing borders on slander. So be careful - you should leave that alone now. I also take no responsibility for the behavior of individuals in the group. Speaking for myself as an individual, I really enjoyed the culinary discourse with you at the time, didn't feel guilty about anything and was extremely shocked by the subsequent course of action in the chain of accusations. Addition/Addendum: What was an unforgettably beautiful evening turned into an unforgettably irritating evening. First of all: Maria is an excellent cook; I have actually never eaten better. However, a few days after that evening we received an accusatory email saying that regular guests had observed us rioting after leaving the location. Christmas balls smashed, whatever. Instead of asking, according to the motto "if in doubt for the accused", whether we felt addressed, we were immediately given the accusation and asked to comment on it. An indescribable outrage, especially on the part of Maria's partner, who took over the administration for this. There were direct threats about the night cameras hanging everywhere and the reporting that would result. It was incredibly cheeky and arrogant to give the so-called regular guests the absolute right to tell the truth and thus let other guests drive into the wall. We won't be coming back. I'm sorry in my heart, but maybe things would go better with someone who doesn't come across as arrogant and self-confident as Matthias. Sorry. A unique and special experience. Family atmosphere, you spend the entire evening with the same guests. Great tasteful location, great cuisine, I've never eaten better! Regional, seasonal, reinterpreted. After her “duty” in the kitchen, Maria took plenty of time for her guests. Your partner Matthias organizes the processes and looks after the guests during the evening. So warm, a touch of Alpine flair, I would describe the whole thing as a great "concept restaurant". Absolutely recommended!

The campaign with the children's home is truly world class.

Great food but unfortunately everything else is a disaster. I think there are numerous 1-star reviews and you can only agree with them. The arrogance and greed of the host (Matthias) is truly world class.

Yesterday we had a wonderful evening with Maria and Matthias that we had been looking forward to for a long time. The location is special, as is the loving design of the entire complex outside and inside -> a family oasis of well-being, The cuisine: perfectly prepared dishes with regional, fresh ingredients.
