AYAME in Kaiserslautern

This is a really small restaurant and reservation is always recommended. You can park at the Alcatraz Hotel. Unfortunately it has a limited menu and might not be able to cater everyone’s taste. For example we went here on a Friday evening for dinner and for main course only sushi and savory pancake was available. Ramen is only served on certain days. So keep that in mind when visiting the restaurant.

The Ayame is one of the best restaurants in Kaiserslautern and, when it comes to original Japanese cuisine, definitely the best restaurant in this region. The masta (head chef) is a master chef. We enjoy the best sushi and ramen around here. All dishes, original Japanese cuisine, that are not so popular in Germany, such as: B. Okonomiyaki (Japanese omelette), Takoyaki (octopus balls), Karaage (fried and previously marinated chicken), grilled eel, or the vegetarian dishes are also of the highest quality. Everything is freshly prepared. Even the wasabi paste is handmade and one of the best I've had the pleasure of enjoying. As a Japan connoisseur and lover, I can highly recommend Ayame. You can't praise this restaurant highly enough. Ayame is a great stroke of luck for Kaiserslautern. If you are also a food lover then I highly recommend this restaurant. The price-performance ratio is very good and, contrary to general opinion in Kaiserslautern, cheap. The ambience is pleasant, simply typically Japanese. Book in advance and immerse yourself in original Japanese cuisine at the highest level. Itadakimasu!

Very quiet, small, nice atmosphere. Staff very friendly and attentive. Food very, very tasty and very sufficient. View into the kitchen. Can be highly recommended.

Awesome hidden gym in the Alcatraz hotel. I think the host is a one-man show, acting also as the chef & server, but he was so welcoming & fast. We went there for the Okonomiyaki, and it did not disappoint… we’ll go back again and again. My son said the eel appetizer was the best he’d ever had.

Unfortunately only with pre-order by telephone! I called staggered over a week from 6 p.m. No pre-orders possible by telephone. Too bad. If you have to drive 1.5 hours and don't know whether you'll get a place. If you leave it alone, of course. Therefore, we are unfortunately denied the enjoyment. Call first if you want to try it.

Signs leading to the restaurant start from the hotels lobby. I thought I was lost trying to find the restaurant. It's in a bit of an obscure location, and it's really quaint. I went for lunch, and the menu was limited. You could get some drinks and 3 different kinds of ramen. I tried to get the okonomiyaki, but I was told it wasn't offered as an option during lunchtime. The food was good, and I wish I'd come for dinner instead so I can get a variety of options.

Ein absolut authentisches Erlebnis! Klein aber geschmacklich ganz groß. Die Sushis schmecken wirklich fein, aber noch besser sind die japanischen Pfannkuchen Namens Okonomiyaki. Umami vom Feinsten. Ich kann nur jedem raten, die Pfannkuchen zu probieren.

Really delicious and authentic Japanese cuisine. Okonomiyaki was to die for, as were the starters and desserts. We tried a few things and were absolutely satisfied. Tip: Be sure to reserve in advance.

The ramen at Ayame was a true taste sensation. From the first glance at the steaming bowl it was clear that the highest culinary art was at work here. The broth was deep and rich, a perfect marriage of savory and umami-rich notes that continued to unfold with each spoonful. You could literally taste the hours of careful preparation that went into each component. The noodles were cooked just right: not too soft, but still pleasantly firm to the bite. They absorbed the broth perfectly and harmonized wonderfully with the other ingredients. A particular standout were the soft-boiled eggs, whose creamy yolk added a wonderful, almost luxurious texture. The pork was another highlight. It was incredibly tender and juicy, literally fell apart in your mouth, and had such an intense flavor that you wanted to savor every slice until the last bite. Fresh scallions and crispy garlic chips brought additional textures and flavors to complete the overall picture of this culinary masterpiece. A little extra were the pickled ginger strips, which provided a refreshing and slightly spicy note in the background. Overall, this ramen was not only filling, but also a true experience for the senses that you won't soon forget. Every spoonful was proof that real passion and skill were at work. An absolutely recommended dish for every ramen lover!

Completely satisfied, my visit there was perfect. Received without reservation on a working day after about 30 minutes. So reservation is recommended. The owner runs the restaurant without any additional staff, quietly and with attention to detail.

Delicious Japanese food, great sushi, Japanese simple space

Authentic ramen made by a Japanese owner. Ramen is only available for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The location is difficult to find inside the hotel.

There were four of us there today and everyone really enjoyed it. The waiting time was completely okay, really not long and the lady who served us was very friendly. The fact that she speaks English didn't bother us at all. The sushi was extremely tasty, everything was very fresh, the wakame was also excellent, the edamame as it should be, but for me the okonomiyaki (without meat) was a real highlight! Super tasty, layered great and I really liked the consistency. Very filling by the way. We also found the sesame ice cream really tasty. The price can really be described as rather cheap for the quality. The ambience is minimalist, but we liked it, but I can imagine that not everyone will like it. The toilets were very clean.

Small and private. Need a reservation. Only one cook so service was a little slow but the food was great.

The food here was great, especially for the area. The chicken karage was nicely marinated and had a good crunch to it. The sushi roll had good quality rice, and the fish didn't smell like other places that do this type of dish. The okanomayaki was also quite good, just a little too much sauce for our taste. Finding the place is a little tricky, but you just need to go through the lobby of the Alcatraz hotel and follow the signs. Overall, it's a good place to get some Japanese food in the area.

The food was great, exactly how you would imagine Japanese cooking to be, preferably communicated in English, and would be happy to do so again

The ramen was absolutely delicious! The service was amazing. They were very nice and courteous. This will be a regular place for us.

We have been here many times and will certainly come back more often. The food (my favorite in the picture) is great and is freshly prepared in the background, the ambience is very special (other than that, I wouldn't want to eat in prison 😜). And the staff here is always very friendly. Thank you and see you next time!

Heard about this through a Facebook group. Glad to have tried is. Their broth is so silky smooth. Their eggs aren’t soft boiled or soaked in seasoning but they are still good. The roasted onions leave a great after taste and the chasu in the shoyu base was so so tasty. It gets a little warm in the small shop and they can’t serve a lot at one time as they are really small but what they do serve is really really good.

The food and the chef himself are simply beyond reproach. Whether gyoza, okonomiyaki or the sushi specialties, everything absolutely blew us away. Really great.

We’ve been in Germany for 4 weeks and this was without a doubt the best food we’ve had! We went with the KARAAGE for an appetizer. Then we split the KYOTO OKONOMIYAKI and MANGO SUSHI! It did not disappoint. Every bite was delicious! I also love the fact that the folks working here are actually Japanese. They rocked it tonight. Will definitely be going back! The restaurant is in an old prison that has been converted to a hotel. It will be a little strange parking in the old yard and then walking through the new lobby to get to the restaurant, but we’ll worth the trip. ごちそうさまでした！！

Haben kurz vorher Reserviert, süßer kleiner laden, etwas versteckt, da der Eingang durch das Alcatraz Hotel führt. Aber einen Besuch wert, das Sushi war hervorragend und die Bedienung sowie der Koch, freundlich und zuvorkommend.

Haben extra reserviert um Okonomiyaki essen zu können. Leider hat uns der japanische "Pfannkuchen " nicht besonders zugesagt. Habe in Düsseldorf bessere gegessen. Das kleine Restaurant befindet sich im Hotel und man findet es durch einen düsteren Weg. Der Raum ist sehr klein und hat wenige Plätze. Auch auf das Essen mussten wir lange warten, da der Mann alleine ist und viele Produkte aus Plastiktüten packe, was mich irritiert hat.

Mega lecker, gute Preise und man kann sogar in die Küche schauen. Wirklich eine authentische Küche in einem ehemaligen Gefängnis.

Kind of difficult to find the restaurant as there is minimal signage, especially since you're entering through a parking lot and hotel. Awfully quiet inside (no music), strange to view directly into the kitchen, and papers were hung all over the wall. Our orders were brought on one shared plate for some reason, so we had to ask for an extra plate. The food was good though!

The sushi was nice and fresh, and it tasted great. The takoyaki was also really delicious. It's definitely pricey, but the food is great, and the staff is friendly.

Small but cozy restaurant in the basement of an interesting hotel which used to be a prison. The food was EXCELLENT and the service was quick. We had a variety of sushi, miso soup, yakitori, gyoza and fried chicken that was crisp on the outside but moist, tender and flavorful on the inside. Thank you Ayame !

Ich war schon in vielen japanischen bzw asiatischen Restaurants. Hier gibt es mit Abstand das beste Okonomiyaki und grundliegend sehr gut schmeckende authentische Küche!!!! Das Personal ist extremst freundlich!

Very authentic and fresh Japanese cuisine. As good as Japan. Inside an old prison converted into a hotel. You have to go through the hotel lobby, and it’s a hole in wall but don’t be put off, the food is absolutely worth it. And the intimate vibe is nice. Everything we tried (sashimi, nigiri, seaweed salad, unagi, miso soup, edamame, sake, matcha ice cream) was excellent.

Wir haben während Corona Sushi bestellt und abgeholt und es war das beste Sushi, das ich bisher in Deutschland gegessen habe! Die Fischqualität, die wir erhalten haben war steht's die Beste und der Preis dafür ist absolut angemessen. Wir haben unser Bestellung immer über Facebook abgegeben und das hat super funktioniert.

Kleines aber feines Restaurant mit gehobener japanischer Küche. Sehr nettes, zuvorkommender Service - auch wenn es etwas länger dauert: Das Warten lohnt sich allemal! Ein mega Geschmackserlebnis - alles frisch aus der Küche auf den Teller. Nur zu empfehlen.

Ich war Sonntag Abend im Ayame essen. Der Name (Lilie) findet sich dezent in der Deko wieder und der Koch, der gleichzeitig auch bedient hat war sehr freundlich. Ich habe Takoyaki, Misosuppe und ein Okonomiyaki mit Fleisch und Käse bestellt. Das Essen wurde frisch zubereitet und nacheinander gereicht. Die Misosuppe war heiß und sehr lecker. Die Takoyaki frisch, nicht zu teigig und mit der Sauce und dem Ingwer auch sehr lecker. Das Okonomiyaki war jede Minute des warten wert(30min wurde in der Karte angegeben). Es war zwar nicht groß, aber ich bin mehr als satt geworden. Auch hier war es weder zu trocken, zu teigig noch zu matschig. Der Kohl war noch leicht bissfest und alles in allem sehr lecker. Das Preisleistungsverhältnis ist super!!! Hier komme ich gerne wieder essen. Eine Reservierung sollte vorher gemacht werden da es sich um ein sehr kleines Lokal handelt.

Quaint little Japanese joint in the town's old prison will have you thrown off at first sight until the smells from the kitchen lift you out of your chair. From the dumplings to the numerous types of delicous sushi, we just might have finally found our Sushi restaurant in this back woods West Virginian part of Germany.

Das erste Mal japanisch Essen und total begeistert. Von der frischen Zubereitung aller Speisen, bis zum Anrichten....ein Gedicht und sowas von lecker. Bin jetzt Fan!!!

Kleines gemütliches Lokal. Die Location in einem alten Gefängnis ist außergewöhnlich und richtig cool. Man sollte auf jeden Fall vorher reservieren und etwas Zeit mitbringen. Sehr freundlicher Service. Sashimi war vllt etwas grob geschnitten, das könnte man verbessern. Besonderes Highlight war das Okonomiyaki; auch hier sollte man aber etwas Geduld mitbringen. Uns hat es gut gefallen.

We tried the teriyaki chicken roll, octopus balls, okinamiyaki, and sashimi. The teriyaki roll and sashimi was decent. The sashimi came with the tiny cheap shrimp you buy from the store with cocktail sauce. The okinamiyaki and octopus balls were God awful. The octopus balls were like soggy hush puppies with uncooked dough and a piece of octopus in the middle. The okinamiyaki was like someone poured teriyaki sauce and mayo over a half cooked pancake. Neither one of us couldnt even swallow a bite.

Wir waren anfangs etwas verwirrt, da wir den Eingang nicht gefunden haben. Man muss in das Hotel reingehen und innen der Beschilderung folgen. Das Restaurant ist dann in einem kleinen Raum mit offener Küche und lediglich 7 Trotz langer Wartezeiten (deshalb 1 Punkt Abzug, da bei 5 besetzten Tischen erst nach 20 Minuten die Getränkebestellung aufgenommen wurde) , fanden wir es ziemlich toll dort! Die Atmosphäre ist etwas schwer zu beschreiben, da der Ort an sich mit dem Hotel etwas surreal ist ;) Das Restaurant besteht lediglich aus einem kleinen Raum mit offener Küche, 7 Tischen und 2 Mitarbeitern. Diese haben alles frisch zubereitet und waren generell sehr goldig. Das Essen war wirklich gut und ich hatte vorher noch nie Okonomiyaki gegessen. Ich habe dieses Gericht so auch noch nie auf einer Speisekarte gesehen un Also ein ganz feiner kleiner Laden - wir kommen wieder!

Am Vortag einen Tisch für 2 Personen reserviert. Parkmöglichkeiten in der unmittelbaren Nähe sind gegeben. Für Laufkundschaft vermutlich eher schwer zu finden. Übersichtlich einfach eingerichteter kleiner Gastraum ohne viel Schnickschnack. Freundliche Bedienung mit Koch machen einen guten Job. Die diversen kleinen Gerichte sind teilweise ungewöhnlich, eine Vielfalt an Sushi wird geboten und hat uns sehr gut geschmeckt. Die sehr schöne Dekoration auf dem Okonmiyaki schmeckt mir nicht ganz so toll (stark Mayonaise-lastig). Für Liebhaber der Japanische Küche sehr Interessant.

Bisher haben wir in Kaiserslautern und Umgebung noch kein besseres japanisches Restaurant gefunden. Das Sushi ist super lecker. Alles wird von dem Chefkoch frisch zubereitet. Das Restaurant ist sehr familiär mit nur 18 Plätzen, deshalb ist eine Reservierung aus unserer Sicht immer empfohlen.

Sehr leckeres japanisches Essen mit hoher Qualität. Ich wollte unbedingt nochmal Okonomiyaki essen, was ich aus Japan kannte. Das Restaurant ist im Alcatraz Hotel im ehemaligen Gefängnis - man muss in bzw. durch das Hotel laufen um in das Restaurant zu kommen. Das Essen war super. Es war nur ein Koch und eine Bedienung anwesend - die Vorspeise war relativ schnell da - die Hauptspeise hat etwas gedauert.

Das Essen war super lecker kann ich nur empfehlen es gibt auch andere Gerichte außer Sushi. Warum ein Punkt Abzug. Es hat fast 2 stunden gedauert bis das essen am Tisch war was gar nicht geht. Und die Bedingungen war verpeilt wenn leere Gläser nicht gesehen und wen einer bestellt hat etwas zu trinken dan hat sie keine anzeichen gemacht wen ander auch noch was wollten so schnell weg war sie das es ewig dauerte bis jeder was nach bestellt hatte

Wir waren zum ersten Mal dort. Es gibt nur wenige Plätze, das Lokal ist sehr klein. Es macht also Sinn, zu reservieren. Das Restaurant liegt im Keller eines sehr originellen Hotels, des Umbaus eines ehemaligen Gefängnisses in ein Hotel. Man muss im ehemaligen Gefängnishof parken und durch den Hoteleingang hineingehen. Wir haben Sushi gegessen. Diese waren gut und frisch, leider ist man mit der Sojasoße und dem Ingwer etwas zurückhaltend. Das Personal ist freundlich. Vermisst habe ich die japanisch übliche Reinigungszeremonie mit einem gewärmten Handtuch zu Beginn. Insgesamt ist auch die Atmosphäre eher sachlich und spartanisch. Das Preis- Leistungsverhältnis stimmt aber. Insgesamt ein nettes kleines Lokal für Menschen, die einfach nur japanisches Essen haben möchten.

Wir gehen regelmäßig ins Ayame und waren bisher immer total besgeistert. Das Essen ist super lecker, die Mitarbeiter sehr freundlich und auch preislich sind die Gerichte ok. Auch am Mittag sehr zu empfehlen, da ein spezieller Mittagstisch angeboten wird.

The restaurant changed owners about 3 months ago. Make sure you make a phone reservation. We tried an online reservation site but it never got to the restaurant. I believe this is because the restaurant is within the hotel. The service and chef are all in one. This young man does it all! The game lace is super clean, the menu is in English and the beer is super cold! The sushi selection is very good. Fresh. It had been years since we had decent tuna in Germany. Just make sure you understand that the prep takes time. We started 7pm and finished by 9:15pm. This was for a party of 6. The entire game lace only holds about 18 people.

When you're in an area where quality Japanese food is hard to come by, this was a real treasure to find. Quality ingredients and rolls that surpassed the flavors (and prices!) of other sushi restaurants in the area made this a wonderful experience. They offered Japanese style hot pancakes and other authentic dishes that you can't find elsewhere. It's a very small restaurant, so reservations are a must. We brought my 5 year old, but she enjoys sushi and the food they served. I would not classify this as a restaurant that you would bring small children to. The staff is incredibly warm and friendly.

One specialty is a savory sort of pancake that comes from the region of Japan the proprietors are from. These people stay true to their craft and art in creating the balanced presentation of their foods with the best ingredients. If you like the sushi buffets this is not the place for you. Proportions and preparations are done to perfection and the dining atmosphere is that of a small place that is warm an inviting. A friend that lived in Okinawa tells me it's one of the few places he's been to outside Japan that is a place Japanese people might go to. This place is probably my overall favorite in Kaiserslautern, and that means a lot coming from a guy that loves all the local European food.

I'm Japanese. I've been there many times, love the food and the friendly service. The Okonomiyaki, Sushi, Karaage, Gyoza, Yaki-Udon, Matcha ice cream..and etc.. all of them are real Japanese food not the fake ones like others in K-town. I'm sure here is the only place where you can have real Japanese food in K-town. The restaurant is small so it's better to make reservations. You can go with small kids too. Absolutely recommended!

Very authentic, your not going to find "dragon rolls" or other snake shaped rolls with cream cheese and sauces on top, these are not authentic Japanese sushi. You will find traditional Japanese sushi and other traditional dishes. I found the fish to be very fresh. The Sushi chef knows his craft. He can recommend a Japanese beer or saki to go with your meal. The restaurant is inside the Alcatraz Hotel. Their closed Sunday and Monday. If your a traditional sushi fan, I really think you will like this place. Probably the best sushi restaurant in Kaiserslautern. Oh, they take credit cards.

I love sushi so I am always open to try new sushi restaurants and this one was very different to me for a few reasons 1. It's in a hotel behind the Japanese garden, and we got some weird looks from the hotel staff when we walked in. This probably had to do with the fact that we were wondering around trying to look for the place, and we almost gave up until someone showed us the way. 2. The restaurant was about the size of a large living room, with about 10 tables. So it was a good thing there was no one there when we went, but I would recommend getting a reservation. 3. The menu is pretty limited to only sushi. I get that it is a sushi restaurant, but I like to have more of a variety. Not many rolls either, which are my favorite. All in all it just wasn't for me, so I probably won't be back.

The owners are very sweet and the restaurant is named after their daughter. The food is prepared according to Japanese tradition but the ingredients they have to work with makes if hard to replicate Japan. Good food but not like Japan. Okonomiaki (sp?) is the best item since the husband is from an area in Japan famous for it. The Karage (sp?) is pretty close and a always tastes good. Recommend if you want a quick taste of Japanese food...a bit expensive though.

Good sushi, small restaurant. you know what they say about the holes in the wall. I was surprised by how fresh the sushi considering it looked like they were pulling their ingredients from tupperware containers. Don't go with a large group but they are definitely worth a date night trip. Kids are allowed in the restaurant but I've never had an issue with noise considering the size.

This is a REAL Japanese restaurant in KL. Fresh food and friendly people. Have been there for many times, and Okonomiyaki is worth a try.

Great service, amazing food! My new sushi spot. Hubby got the Gyoza, and two other chicken appetizers and it was great. I got two different sushi rolls and it was fabulous. We will be regulars!

Decor, staff, food and sake are all great. The price is what would be expected of a quality sushi place. Seating is nice with plenty of space for medium sized groups of family or friends.

Located inside the Alcatraz Hotel, this small Japanese restaurant is definitely the best place for sushi in Ktown! The staff are super friendly, the prices aren't bad, and the menu is simple but great! There is parking there and it is easy to walk downtown...

I had the five course dinner set with sushi and sashimi. Very good. Service very good. It's inside the Alcatraz hotel. Very small. Excellent overall. Pricey but worth it.
