Amma's Food in Dortmund

Amma’s Food is definitely a great place for authentic food with some really good vegetarian and vegan options. The dishes taste great - intensely seasoned, freshly prepared and of consistently high quality every time. Anyone who has eaten there once will be happy to come back! A notable downside, however, is the service, which is friendly but often seems a bit disorganized. The long waiting times in particular require patience. Nevertheless, in most cases the wait is worth it because the food is simply convincing.

Yes, the wait here is definitely not for those in a hurry — but it was so worth the wait! The food is really tasty, authentically Sri Lankan/Tamil and just perfectly seasoned to my taste.

A little sketchy looking place. Food was decent, menu is mostly suited to non-vegetarian people, that being said, some vegetarian options available. Off Menu- Dosa is available upon request.

The food is delicious, but it takes a long time for the order to arrive. The ambience urgently needs work. The shop is uncomfortable, there is little to no heating and there are things like building materials and shopping carts lying around. There is definitely a need for action!

Great authentic Sri Lankan food !!

First things first: the food is great. The decor is more of a snack bar than a restaurant, but the staff was super friendly and the service was quick. Value for money is great, hence five stars.

The food and friendliness of the staff were good. However, the sanitary facilities were unpleasant. There was also a man standing in the women's toilet with the door open.

Went there at 9pm on Saturday and they were closed.

Food was very tasty and perfectly seasoned. The waiter initially confused the dishes a bit, but apologized and replaced them without further ado. Everything great! 👍

Food was no fresh. Food tasted off, not every item on the menu was available. Food was cold and stale. Cups were dirty. A woman sat at the desk was making us feel uncomfortable by staring.

The food was very good. It looked and tasted authentic. We had Pitu with Beef Curry. We also had Idiyappam with Chicken curry. The service was good. We enjoyed it. We will surely go back again.

The best vadai I've had so far in Germany. The Rottis were large, tasty and the side dishes were also tasty. My husband was able to enjoy his meal too, he had Lamb Kotthu Roti. Everyone in the restaurant was friendly and accommodating and the ambience was great. We paid by card without any problems. We would like to come again.

Anyone who wants Indian or Sri Lankan food has come to the right place. There are delicious dishes on the menu that I have never eaten anywhere else. The service is great.

Fresh food, friendly service, good prices

I don't recommend this restaurant for people who want to eat in peace. Very bad atmosphere there. There are always people available for pickup, there is no service for people eating on site. The staff is unfriendly, doesn't take orders seriously and only serves the food after waiting over an hour. I would recommend "Paper Roast Dosa", but there is definitely no real Indian food there. Sometimes expired food is even served.

We went on saturday for lunch aroujd 1 pm. We had to nearly wait for 1 hour. Finally we got stale food. Only 3 Staff including the Cook. They could not manage the crowd and they ignored the guests, made us wait and focussed on the delivery service. Absolute no-go. They are not bothered about the health of the customers.

I had the dubious pleasure of visiting this restaurant and I have to say I was extremely disappointed from start to finish. The service was an absolute disaster. First of all, we had to wait over an hour for our order and were repeatedly put off with “only 10 more minutes”. After the entire waiting time, we had to bitterly discover that our order had been taken incorrectly, although the service did not want to show any insight, preferring to blame the customers and in a very disrespectful and brazen manner. Although it was in the middle of busy times, you should at least give a reliable time estimate, not accept walk-ins when other large orders are prioritized, or at least fulfill the correct order at the end. We would of course have accepted a polite apology for a misunderstanding or the waiting time, but this manner is simply unacceptable. All in all very dubious and not recommended. There are plenty of alternatives in the immediate vicinity.

Descent option to try Sri Lankan dishes. We tried dosa, biriyani, prawns curry, beef.

Achtung, kürzlicher Eigentümerwechsel. Kreditkarten werden NICHT akzeptiert, bereits erworbene Groupon Gutscheine sind ebenfalls NICHT mehr einlösbar und müssen via Groupon reklamiert werden. Die Gerichte waren lecker und der Schärfegrad konnte frei gewählt werden. Das Lammfleisch war leider nicht von bester Qualität sondern sehr fettig. Das Papadam mit Mango Chutney, der indische Tee und der Mango Lassi waren gut. Der Gewürztee passt übrigens super in die kalte Weihnachtszeit, solltet ihr im Winter auf jeden Fall probieren. Der Kellner war äußerst zuvorkommend, trat allerdings in Jogginghose auf. Ambiente sucht man hier vergeblich. Die Heizungsverkleidung wirk sehr provisorisch und auch sonst ist außer einiger holzbrauner Tischgruppen nicht viel zu entdecken. Die Instrumentalmusik im Hintergrund war gut auszuhalten. Parken schwierig. Insgesamt ein solides Indisches Essen ohne Atmosphäre. Bei der Konkurrenz in der Umgebung gibt es mehr für weniger, daher wird es für den neuen Besitzer von Amma's Food eine Herausforderung werden hier langfristig Fuß zu fassen.

Hatte heute Reis + Fischcurry zum mitnehmen. Es war sehr lecker! Ich komme gerne wieder!

Webordered 2 medu bada, and 4 dal bada and 1 cup of milk tea and one mango lassi. The bada were served without doing any microwave, they were cold. The mango lassi was not fresh, rotten smell was coming from that. The milk tea was good. Overall it is a very bad experience. We will never visit this shop again. The shop just opposite to this is far better and atleast serve fresh and hot foods.

Great Hospitality and tasty food

Wir hatten einen Gutschein von Groupon und hatten einen Tisch bestellt.Habe versucht sie telefonisch zu erreichen,vergenbens!!Sind trotzdem hingefahren von Dorsten,kamen an,und ZU,geschlossen!

Da wir unseren Hund dabei hatten wurden wir hinaus gebeten.

Schade, dass man online einen Tisch reservieren kann, das Lokal als geöffnet dargestellt wird und wenn man dann ne weite Anfahrt hat, vor geschlossenen Türen steht. Waren dann leider auf unserem Hochzeitstag wo anders.

Food was delicious. Authentic family owned place! A bit weird that we were told that all prices from the menu cost 2 EUR more. Then again it was good that we were told of this before ordering. Service was rather slow but it is after all a small family owned place and it was rather full at the time when we visited. Place a bit worn out. But the food was totally worth it! Really delicious starters (we ordered one of each). Pittu with Fish Curry, Masala Dosa, Idiyappa with lamb curry all spot on tasty! Excellent food! 4 stars just because the place feels a bit worned out and could be cleaner. Food was top notch and for good prices. Would surely return!

Ich hatte das Vergnügen, Amma's Food in Dortmund zu besuchen und wurde von der Erfahrung restlos begeistert! Dieses charmante Restaurant hat mich nicht nur mit seiner herzlichen Atmosphäre, sondern auch mit seinem köstlichen Essen absolut überzeugt. Was mich besonders beeindruckte, war die Hingabe des Küchenteams, authentische Geschmacksrichtungen einzufangen und gleichzeitig den individuellen Geschmack jedes Gastes zu berücksichtigen. Meine Vorlieben wurden aufmerksam beachtet, und das Personal war auch bereit, Empfehlungen auszusprechen und bei der Auswahl der Gerichte zu helfen. Abschließend möchte ich sagen, dass Amma's Food nicht nur ein Restaurant ist, sondern ein Ort, an dem Gastfreundschaft und exzellentes Essen aufeinandertreffen. Das freundliche Personal, das einladende Ambiente und die fantastische Küche machen diesen Ort zu einem absoluten Muss für alle, die authentische indische Küche lieben oder sie kennenlernen möchten.

Preise sind teurer als auf der Speisekarte angegeben. Dies wurde uns vorher nicht mitgeteilt.

Was good but takes a lot of preparation time. Food is worth a try

The food wasn't that good. We waited about 20 minutes to place our order. Drinks came in 15 minutes and food in 45 minutes. and then they charged double.The price was not like in the menu.

Very worst service! When I went to this restaurant, there was a guy taking orders. His behavior was weird and he didn't even listen to my orders. After sometime, he just went inside to the kitchen without any response. I don't recommend this place and please don't go there. Better go to some restaurants nearby like Annam, where you get proper hospitality atleast.

Wir hatten die Linsensuppe, wo die Linsen fehlten.Die Suppe hat nur nach Salz geschmeckt und zudem war der Instant Würfel nicht richtig aufgelöst. Meine Begleitung hatte das Gericht Biryami Huhn wo das Hähnchencurry gefehlt hat, außerdem waren spitze Hühnerknochen im Reis. Auch die Hauptspeise waren sehr Salzig Das Restaurant ist nicht zu empfehlen, mein Magen brennt immer noch versalzenen essen.

Ich bestellte ein Biryani. das schmeckt wie pulisadam.und erhalten eine Menükarte. nach unserer bestellung.. er sagt diese menükarte ist alt. Neue Prise sind sogar 3 bis 4 Euro zu viel. Nie wieder.

Great place for South Indian / Srilankan Cuisine. You get a decent quantity for a really low price. The manager is very friendly. The desserts we ordered were average at best, but the main course was good. It's not really a fine dining restaurant, but if you ever want to explore the cuisine, then it's a good place to start.

Falsche Telefonnummer bei Google und auf der Website steht, man kann zum Abholen bestellen, aber es gibt keine Speisekarte, auf der man gucken könnte.

Wir waren gestern zu fünft dort. Trotz Groupon Gutschein war der "Kellner" super nett. Hat die Gerichte prima erklärt. Er hat uns dann eine gemischte Vorspeisenplatte gebracht. Etwas mit Lamm, Hähnchen, Linsen. Alles hat sehr gut geschmeckt. Als Hauptspeise haben wir uns für Kothurotti + Biryani in europäisch und normal scharf entschieden. Auch wenn es nicht ganz so voll war, muss man schon sagen, dass es etwas länger gedauert hat. Aber verständlich, wenn der Koch noch zwischendurch schöne Musik gespielt hat. :-) Insider. Die Hauptspeisen waren wirklich fantastisch. Viele Aromen, gute Schärfe. Portion ausreichend. Volle Punktzahl von uns. Wir kommen gerne wieder !!!

If you are Indian or Srilankan, please avoid this hotel. Because, you will be ignored and treated like you are a beggar in this restaurant. You won't get treated like you are paying and eating... I faced two times. Better to avoid. Most importantly, if you have kids, never ever you think of this restaurant... Rates are different from the menu. Extra 1 euro. Don't know what logic is this! Also don't go on Monday, because you do not have options for other near by hotels, annam Or Sweet chilli. Finally... Don't go for this restaurant

Das Essen dort ist wirklich lecker und das Personal nett. Man muss ein wenig warten bevor das Essen kommt, vor allem wenn voll, aber dafür wird frisch gekocht. Menü ist alt und Preise sind nicht tagesaktuell, erwartet min. 20% höhere Preise als im Menü angegeben. Sonst alles sehr gut. PS* unbedingt den Mangolassi ausprobieren!! 🙂

Das Essen ist sehr lecker und authentisch. Der Service ist nett, aber zu Stoßzeiten völlig überfordert. Man sollte also viel Geduld und Zeit mitbringen, wenn man hier abends Essen geht. Wir waren über ZWEI Stunden hier...

Lasst euch nicht täuschen. Eine absolute Geldverschwendung: Es günstig, allerdings sind die Portionen nicht ausreichend und sehen ehrlich gesagt auch nicht gut aus. Geschmacklich war es nur teilweise gut und der Service war sehr langsam. Bei diesen Bewertungen hätte man glauben können, dass das Restaurant überzeugt, doch nach dem ersten und definitiv letzten Besuch, hat sich das Gegenteil ergeben.

One man servicing to all the table is not a good idea .... The must engage more people especially on the weekend .... Kothu parotta is ok.... Crab gravy without a single crab, its just a couple of crab legs and full of green chilli and the taste is horrible..... Mutton gravy also full of green chilli and the taste is horrible.... The waiting time /servicing time on weekend is toooo loooong..... Should prepare the food with some taste and good service..... Not recommendable to friends.....,🤐🤐🤐🤐

Very friendly and the best Srilankan restaurant in Dortmund. Of course, there are plenty of Srilankan restaurants in Dortmund, however this is the best restaurant among all. I tried Kothu Parotta and it was awesome. Nice ambience to dine as well. The owner was so very friendly. Must give it a try !

Sehr sehr schlecht. Nie wieder!!! Das essen war verdorben. Wahrscheinlich vom Vortag oder noch älter. Es ist eine echte Zumutung. Schade um das Geld. Also definitiv Finger weg.

First we were standing and waiting after 15min we got table which is still ok. We were given menu and the guy kept saying "2min" and came to take the order after 20min. Samosa an lassi were served, lassi was good but samosa were very small and tasted below average. We were asking about the lunch nad he kept saying "2mins" every time. Well we kept waiting for more than 30-40min and then comes the main course. The dosa was below average, sambhar was tasteless and weird. The roti combo had one sabji which was actually the contents of masala dosa only, the roti served was not roti actually it was weird flattened bread which becomes hard with time, you cat chew it easily. Overall our experience was worst, pathetic food, Pathe services, ad on top of that when it comes to the bill, the menu had half the prices but in the bill every thing was double, i understand tha the menu might not be updated but still nowhere it was written that it was an old menu and the prices ae revised or double what is written. There was just one person serving, taking orders, and making bills and taking payments, so you can imagine the chaos. It was our first and last visit there. Hope they do something by reading the reviews.

Nach langer Zeit wieder zurück. Alles stimmt:Essen, Trinken und Service. Wir waren sehr zufrieden mit diesem Indisch/Sri Lankesischen Spitzenlokal. Kommen gerne wieder.

Wir haben Montag Briyani gekauft, sie haben wohl das Essen vom Vortag warm gemacht und verkauft und es ging meinen Kindern echt schlecht und sie mussten sich sogar übergeben und hatten Durchfall.

Hier hatten wir definitiv Erinnerungen an unseren Sri Lanka Urlaub. Essen war super und authentisch serviert auf Edelstahlteller. Haben jetzt auch schon zweimal dort gegessen und werden es wieder machen.

Belove average. No chutneys available, he made chutney after serving and us eating whole dosa. Not recommended.

After staying in Bangalore (South India) for more than 6 years, I didn't find Dosa, idli or Sambhar as per my taste buds. But again this is a Sri Lankan restaurant, so it is basically the recipe and taste difference. My review is only from the South Indian dishes point of view.

Ich war schon oft in Ammas und liebe das Essen und die Gerichte dort. Die Zeit, die sie brauchen, um das Essen zu bringen, ist jedoch zu lang. Der Service ist schlecht. Wenn das Restaurant voll ist, erwarten Sie Ihre Bestellung mindestens nach 1 Stunde. Ich würde 5 für das Essen und 1 für den Service geben.

Das Kottu Roti zum Mitnehmen war sehr lecker. Geschmacklich stimmig und angenehm zartes Hühnerfleisch! Lecker!

Amma Food is located in Dortmund..! So it should serve good food but not..! The service is not good, food quality is even worse..! Example of Service - No proper cutlery is provided when food is served.. you need to ask for it..! Are we eating in a restaurant or in Kiosk..! Food quality - you ask for a coffee and you get Milk Colored something like a coffee, do we need milk to proper good coffee..! Dosa is full of oil and Coffee Cups have broken edges.. if you drink with such cups risks your Lips and again are we eating n drinking in a restaurant or in a kiosk..! Overall very bad reviews..!

They scammed us with the price today. We were in a really big hurry so we couldn't go back to fight them. The bill was around €15 but they charged €27. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. disgusting that they are doing this in Germany

Rude attitude and bad tasting food.

Very bad experience having food in this restaurant. The people are very arrogant and if asked anything they are becoming angry on customers . Please do not try the sambar as it is not sambar.

I feel even the restaurant don’t deserve not even one star for dishes and services. This is the worst restaurant I ever had in total Europe.
