Alte Gundtei in Heidelberg

If I could give Ten Stars I would. There is nothing, I repeat nothing not to like about this restaurant. I’m familiar with most Middle Eastern cuisines but not so much Turkish other than doner kabobs. From the beginning, making a reservation was easy. I don’t speak Turkish or German so I was a pleasantly surprised that everyone we had contact with spoke great English plus, they were all helpful, polite, and fun to joke with. My spouse has issues with gluten so it was great to be able to communicate this. We did learn from the server their rice has little noodles in it so they could substitute out potatoes. This one thing possibly saved my spouse a lot of physical discomfort. The food was incredible and plentiful regardless what the earlier reviewer said. We had starters of lentil soup and a baked shrimp, onion, peppers and cheese mini casserole. Both were excellent. I was served wonderful bread to sop up the casserole broth. For mains, we had the grilled lamb skewer with tomato, onion and bell pepper substituting potatoes for the non GF rice; and the braised lamb shoulder with rice, & veg. Both came with a very fresh mixed green salad served before the entree. Everything was perfectly seasoned and the red sauce on the lamb shoulder was to die for. Lastly, loved the Anatolian “Ancyra” red wine for €29. I’d have to pay nothing less than $60 for a bottle of similar quality in the US. Again, I will repeat, we loved our servers. They were the best! One last thing, I feel I have to address the earlier reviewer complaining about the decor. OMG, it’s a Turkish restaurant. The decor was very tastefully done. Not every restaurant in Germany needs to look like a Ratskellar or a Gasthaus!

The food and service is lower than average. The price is really high for this kind of food. Tge design is fine.

Consistently good Turkish cuisine... A long-established restaurant in Heidelberg in family hands. In summer you can sit outside in the side street. The staff is super friendly and you feel welcome.

La cocina turca siempre es genial para probar, así que elegimos este restaurante para cenar. El lugar es muy amplio, pero la decoración “extraña” llama la atención. Es una elegante mezcla de luces orientales, cuadros modernos y elementos griegos antiguos (estatuas y pilares del templo). Si ignoras esto, entonces viene el servicio amable y eficiente y la comida preciosa. Antep kebap, Yoğurtlu Kebap y brocheta de cordero eran todos excelentes. Kunefe no era de primera clase, pero todavía agradable para terminar la cena. Recomendado (por la calidad de los alimentos).

We didn't have a reservation but we still got a table for a set period of time, just great. Super friendly staff 😃, courteous and attentive. It's great that there are still people who do their job with heart, thank you for that. The food was first class, perfectly seasoned, beautifully prepared and simply tasted wow. I've already eaten in Istanbul and you don't have to hide there 👍🏽. Really excellent cuisine. We had a lovely evening and thank you very much for that. We'll definitely come back when we're there.

If you like good Turkish food, in an inspiringly decorated place ( the lamp catwalk is amazing), and for ok prices, this is the place. I go often there and I am always celebrating the choices I make, always delicious 😋 Heads up if you are really hungry...not very recommended, the dishes are not as huge as German standards. But ok size.

Super friendly service, the food was excellent, very good quality and only praiseworthy in terms of taste. The atmosphere is very pleasant, nicely decorated and you immediately feel welcome. I can only recommend this restaurant, but it is advisable to reserve in advance as it is very busy. At the end we got a Turkish chai on the house :)

Turkish food at the highest level!

Nice restaurant, great service. The food is really great - both in terms of taste and quality. Even “simple” side dishes like rice taste really good. Only the portions could be a little larger. Price performance is still good.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was nice, but the food left a lot to be desired for the price. I'm not expecting an overloaded plate with half left over, but for €18 the portion was far too small. There were just 3-4 spoons of rice on an Adana skewer. The grilled vegetables were also extremely limited, about 1.5 tablespoons – really very lean. I had ordered a lentil soup as it said on the menu, but I was served a different soup. When I asked the waiter about it, he said it was Ezogelin soup. I told him again that I had ordered a lentil soup and not Ezogelin. He then said that it was a lentil soup. However, it was actually an “Ezogelin” soup. When I asked if he knew the difference between the two soups, he simply said they were the same, they just had different names. When I asked the chef later, he explained that he had simply mixed both soups. For the soup I paid €7.50 and for a glass of water I paid a total of €11.50. Overall, the visit was disappointing and I cannot recommend the restaurant at all. The prices are overpriced, you don't get full and the service leaves a lot to be desired - that was a rip-off for me. If you want to eat good Turkish food you shouldn't go there.

Me gustó mucho este lugar. El servicio y la comida eran excelentes. Entonces, ¿por qué 4 vs. ¿5 estrellas? Si vienes realmente hambriento, tendrás que pedir un aperitivo y/o postre para salir completamente contento. Pedí un aperitivo, que compartimos marido y yo, además cada uno tenía su propia entrada, así que estábamos bien. Si no hubiéramos pedido un aperitivo, entonces la comida en sí no habría sido suficiente. El aperitivo y la comida eran absolutamente deliciosos, así que solo ten esto en cuenta al hacer el pedido. Por último, si vienes un fin de semana, las reservas son imprescindibles.

Really enjoyed our meal. I knocked it down one star because if you come in really hungry, you will need to order an appetizer to walk out full. Food otherwise absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. Reservations on weekends a must.

Even my granddaughter likes it, which means a lot.

8/28 I had my last dinner of my trip to Germany here ⭐️ Fortunately, I was able to get in without waiting on a weekday evening, and I ordered what I was drawn to on the menu, and I was happy because the delicious chicken cream kebabs and lamb kebabs were so delicious 🥰 My husband said this restaurant was the best. That's telling! We were the only Koreans. I also ordered grilled liver on the side and it was delicious too! Thank you for ending the last dinner of our trip on a good note!

I asked for the meat platter and got a carb platter. People working there are nice but prices scam you out of your money the restaurant was empty probably for good reason. Wouldn’t recommend.

We had dinner there yesterday for our wedding anniversary. The staff is very friendly and often comes by to check if there is anything else you would like as a guest. The food is not only very good, it is also plentiful! We had the grill plate for two people, the price was crazy at €48! At least one person could have easily eaten with us and there would probably still have been a lot. As the waiters passed by, you could also see the size of the individual portions, which were also very decent. Definitely our first address for dinner on our next visit to beautiful Heidelberg. With all the plus points already mentioned, one should also mention the location near the market square, which is beautifully central!

Overall everything tasted great, Only for €9.50 for a warm starter with 5 small slices, + yoghurt on the aubergines, the price is not appropriate. Therefore only 4 ⭐️

Last night we were there and the waiter spilled the drink on me! No proper apology from the owner, no compensation! My wife had to bring me fresh clothes from home! The best thing about the evening was that we were charged a full €416.**! I have never experienced such impudence in my life! Absolute amateurs! Not recommended at all! Never again!!!!!!

Meze tasted bad. In the main course I had a lamb skewer, which was quite ok, it was only one skewer (usually 2 skewers are served), service was attentive. Location is good because you can walk to the old town. Parking is possible at the nearby parking garage.

As a couple, everything was so good. 2× 0.4l in glass with lemon We were not asked whether the lemon was desired! Cola Zero 11€ 2x chicken skewer with side salad 37€ Unfortunately the portion was very small. Bread had to be requested separately. Everything tasted good but it didn't fill me up. Tip to the management to offer a plate of small meze as a welcome meal just to try. I would rather invest a few € in order to win happy returning guests. But the skewers were delicious 😋

Unfortunately only two vegetarian dishes. Which are basically the same. Had an appetizer beforehand. But it was actually the same as the main course. With the difference that there was still rice. Unfortunately it was very disappointing. I would have hoped for more for the price.

After a long time we had dinner here again. It was all very tasty. The service was quick, attentive and friendly. We are happy to recommend the restaurant.

We went there for the first time yesterday based on a recommendation and found it to be a great restaurant overall. The service staff were perfect and the cleanliness was very well maintained and clean despite the age of the facility. The starters were fresh and delicious. The main course wasn't bad either, but the rice could definitely be improved or should be improved. The large plate really made it worse because there was more rice than anything else on the plate and we didn't like it. The shop is definitely an asset for Turkish cuisine as there is a real emphasis on quality and freshness, which is difficult to see in many Turkish restaurants at the moment. I really appreciate this shop because I know how much work goes into being able to offer such fresh food. We thank you for the lovely evening.

Very nice staff, delicious food and very cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend, plenty of parking spaces in parking lot no. 12 which is opposite the restaurant if you want to get there by car.

I visited this restaurant for the first time two weeks ago. We didn't have a reservation, but we still got a table quickly (not a given for a Friday evening). Before that, I had been to many different Turkish restaurants in the area. This one really impressed me, I hadn't eaten Turkish like this in a long time. The prices are perfectly reasonable for the location, and the food is really high quality. The portions are OK, but to be fair, moderate. Overall great, gladly again :)

A young gentleman of Turkish descent (perhaps the owner) was super friendly. The food sola wasn't for me. Salad is super delicious. My ice cream order was brought to me incorrectly and then it was accepted as such. Not too bad, but I was craving walnut ice cream instead of vanilla. Künefe was a smooth 10/10! Unfortunately I didn't have a latte. Fake ice cream without a latte was just boring. Staff young and dynamic

Meine überarbeitete Version, da die originale zugegebenermaßen nicht freundlich war. Also jetzt mal sachlich: Es ist nichts frisch im Restaurant. Eher eine Sauf Stube als ein Restaurant. Tourimus-Falle. Vorspeiseteller ist bestimmt seit Tagen vorbereitet im Kühlschrank gewesen. Hauptspeisen dauerten sehr lange. Einzige was frisch war, war das Brot Mercimek Suppe wässrig. Die Hauptspeisen waren Lichtjahre von authentischer, türkischer Küche entfernt. Wir haben nur Getränke bezahlt, das war eine Zumutung. Warum? Wir mussten mit unserer Mutter in dieser ach so tollen Kneipe auf nicht frisches Essen warten, was nicht schmeckte und preislich unverschämt teuer war, der entsprechenden Qualität. Und dann am Ende noch mit den Kellnern und "Chefköchen" zu diskutieren warum getrockneter Bulgur nichts mit frisch zu tun hat war die Krönung.

Die Bedienung ist freundlich und hilfreich, die Atmosphäre ist sehr einladend und das Essen schmeckt sehr gut. Es gibt nichts negatives zu sagen. Das alles sogar zu einem guten Preis! Die Portionen sind ordentlich. Künefe und Yogurtlu Kebab kann ich nur empfehlen. Weiter so!

Delicious Turkish meal with German pilsners. The fried soft cheese appetizer and lamb entrees were incredible. It felt like more of a local spot and was quieter while the Christmas markets were packed. Our server was friendly, helpful, and spoke English. Would highly recommend if you’re looking for something other than German food in Heidelberg.

Super Ambiente, Restaurant Besitzer ist Super freundlich und die Servicekräfte sind sehr nett, kein Wunder dass dieses Restaurant so einen guten Ruf hat, wer da einkehren möchte muss vorher reservieren sonst hat man da keine Chance auf gut Glück da ein zu kehren da es brechend voll ist, und es werden nur Speisen aus der türkischen und Arabische Küche serviert was ich richtig gut finde. PS: alles wird zu 100 Prozent frisch zubereitet was auch sehr nobel ist.

Tasty food, friendly waiters, all around a very nice experience :) I've had the lamb shoulder, the meat was tender and aromatic and went very well with the sauce and side of rice and zucchini. I can also recommend the fig desert with walnut and ice cream, it does together perfectly.

This restaurant is a gem. The atmosphere when you enter is magnificent, it is almost cliché from Turkey but at least we feel transported there. The food is good. Although the restaurant serves food that makes us think about Turkey, it is notactually what Turkish people actually eat every day (I got this information from my Turkish friend). The service was very polite and nice. The portions are small.
