I've been a vegetarian since 1986...that, by coincidence, is also the year that I stopped a couple year stint as an employee at a local McDonalds...thanks to their fries (here in America) being made with beef tallow and thus not vegetarian, I really haven't set foot in a McDonald's since 1986. They really, here in America, don't even try to offer plant-based options, and the fact that their fries are not vegetarian is just a deal breaker. Enter Germany, where thanks to forward thinking and a thriving vegetarian and vegan culture,, at McDonald's, the plant-based options are plentiful, and their french fries are certified vegan! Hosanna! With this knowledge, we stopped in for a late-night snack during a quick trip to Hamburg. We had the plant-based chicken nuggets and an order of fries. The nuggets were fantastic...deep fried and just how I remembered the real thing tasted back when I ate them. And what a delight to actually have McDonald's fries again thanks to them being vegetarian. Okay, it's still McDonald's...it's only so nice...it really ain't healthy...but for a quick option, with options for vegetarians that we can't get in the U.S....well if we lived in Germany, it would definitely be in our rotation. (Pretty sure my 16-year-old wanted to move to Germany just for this reason alone. Thanks, Hamburg McDonald's for welcoming us back into the fold. America could learn from you.
