A gem in the heart of Essen. You immediately feel welcome and welcomed like family. The menu is outstanding, and the wine and beer selection is fantastic. The "Daube de Boef" is the best I've ever eaten. And now they're also collaborating with the Karussell restaurant. If you can, go there. Sensational food, fantastic ambiance, and friendly people. You immediately feel at home.

But what truly made this evening an unforgettable experience was the exceptional service provided by our waitress. With charm, attentiveness, and a keen sense for the right moment, she ensured that our date was perfectly accompanied. We both opted for the Potpourri – a four-course culinary journey that offered new surprises with each stop. Each plate was a composition of refinement, creativity, and harmony. From the first appetizer to the last bite of dessert, we were offered an experience that went far beyond "just good food." This menu was a feast for the senses – not only in terms of taste, but also in the presentation and interplay of flavors. Each course told its own little story, and at the end, we were left with the feeling of having embarked on a culinary journey. The fact that our date was a complete success was due in no small part to this thoroughly enjoyable evening. Very friendly and attentive staff. The atmosphere is very nice, especially funny that you can play bowls in the courtyard while you wait for your food. And that was unfortunately the weak point. My meal (schnitzel with fried potatoes) was unfortunately over-fried and sticky. But maybe my girlfriend and I were just unlucky today, because the majority of the reviews are positive. We were a large group, after all.

We celebrated a birthday. It was PERFECT. Wonderfully creative drinks, even non-alcoholic ones. Homemade violet lemonade was a delight 😍🥳🥂, and at the buffet: currywurst, also vegan, with a fabulous sauce. The staff were attentive and friendly without being intrusive. You couldn't ask for more. Definitely worth a visit.

I've been to the Wundertüte several times – with friends and alone. Each time, I'm immersed in a world of friendly, light sounds and a sophisticated, bright ambiance. No matter what I ordered, it was wonderfully delicious and harmonious! There must be a superb chef and a lovingly thought-out concept behind it! My favorite wine with most dishes is your Chibet Voignier! I always leave feeling delighted and exhilarated. Many thanks to everyone involved!

I was here for the first time today and would love to come back. The ambiance is classic, understated, and elegant. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. The service is excellent, very friendly, and very professional. My requests were met. I highly recommend the four-course menu; it's a very nice, delicious selection for anyone who can't decide or wants to be surprised. Don't be put off by the facade and the sign above the door; they don't quite match the interior. :)

Update June 2025: Last week, we were privileged to enjoy a unique Italian evening with a table of 10 people at the "Wundertüte" restaurant. We've never experienced the concept of sitting with a group of people around a long table, eating, laughing, and tasting food, and we would like to declare this project an "absolute success"! In addition to the excellent food and the lovingly selected wines (each of the four courses was accompanied by two tastings of wine, allowing us to discuss which one would best complement each menu), both the staff and the guests at the Wundertüte are simply sensational. After a long and very enjoyable evening, we've already made plans to meet again. For us, the Wundertüte, with its innovative concept and wonderfully intimate atmosphere, has now become like coming home... with an excellent, creative chef, who also deserves a special mention. Anyone who wants to dine and enjoy sophisticated, yet not pretentious, high-quality food in charming company must definitely try the Wundertüte with its various innovative ideas! Definitely too expensive for the quality of the food.

We enjoyed going there often. The food was always delicious. Special requests were always accommodated, we were there with our children, and we were always able to order variations from the children's menu. Now the image seems to be changing: the children's menu has been abolished, special requests were no longer possible; they were simply supposed to order a dish from the regular menu and share... Unfortunately, these sophisticated dishes simply don't suit the children's preferences, and they wouldn't have been able to eat anything except fries, so we left empty-handed... We had the impression that children were no longer welcome—otherwise, why would they abolish the children's menu? So, it's more suitable for adults only.

Absolute recommendation. Very tasty and lovingly prepared dishes in a beautiful atmosphere.

It looks inconspicuous from the outside...a friendly atmosphere and welcome. Recommendation for the aperitif CLASS. Starter - GREAT. Roasted asparagus with mango bruchetta and truffle parmesan with 15 year old balsamic vinegar. Attentive service...we feel looked after. The main course - FANTASTIC. Braised lamb rump, tender as butter and with a Champions League flavor with sweet potato puree and beans. Then a dessert and always suitable drink recommendations. All around 2 exceptional hours - with fantastic food. We can recommend the miracle bag without reservation and with pleasure. It's worth it. 15 out of 10 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟

Small, fine restaurant. Looks rather inconspicuous from the outside. Went here for something to eat while working and had a nice private environment. Really comfortable. The food is very tasty and fresh! (I had potato soup, schnitzel with fried potatoes and ice cream with popcorn). Not too much choice, so that really fresh food is on the table. Separate weekly/seasonal offers are available. The prices are perfectly fine. From around €5 upwards. The service was friendly and not too intrusive. In total we were there for almost 6 hours 😃

The contrast between the location and external appearance and the standards in service and cuisine could hardly be greater. Very attractive! However, the kitchen did not fully fulfill its promise: the fresh Sicilian-style tagliatelle was clearly lacking in lemony freshness and herbal tartness (- ⭐️). It's also a shame that the greeting from the kitchen, rejected due to an intolerance to an ingredient, was not substituted. On top of that, the portions seemed quite manageable overall. The service was friendly, although the staff changed - someone else was always at the table asking questions or bringing something. Despite the size of the place, there is a feeling of confinement. Advance reservation is strongly recommended, perhaps even mandatory.

The highlight in the north of Essen - the WUNDERTÜTE in the Bochold district! Cozy, very tasty, (child-)friendly, subtle music in the background - everything your heart desires for a nice, relaxed evening! Compliments to the operators for the courage and commitment to invest here.

First-class restaurant in all categories: food, service, style, cleanliness and you can eat here pretty cheaply. What makes this restaurant very unique is that there are regularly interesting events here, such as wine tasting or "long tables", where people from the neighborhood can come together and get to know each other. Kudos to the restaurant owners who put a lot of effort and heart into these projects!

Since you can only post one review, I copied the first one from eleven months ago and added it at the back. At that time we were already excited, had "only" eaten a currywurst, and planned to order something more sophisticated next time, which we did today. We were there very early and were greeted warmly at the entrance. We then ordered French duck and ox cheeks. In short: a poem. We have now decided to eat here once a month if possible. First review: My wife and I went on a short bike ride because of the nice weather, but it was still very cold. Frozen, I say to her: let's eat a "Manta Platter", I discovered a new shop: the "Wundertüte". Now let's be honest, can you cook a currywurst to a star level? Boh eh, luckily there were two slices of baguette so we could scrape the last drop of sauce out of the bowl. I just say: awesome! Next time we come, we'll order something more sophisticated from the menu. The ambience and service are not outstanding in relation to the unusual cuisine. You just feel good. Keep it up, we wish you all the best.

The food is very tasty and beautifully presented. We had the Valentine's Day menu today. The cook has it all. The employees are all polite and not intrusive! Are extremely positively surprised. Will come back there again when the time comes. There are still a few very tasty-sounding dishes that we would like to try. Can absolutely recommend the restaurant! Keep it up!

Beautiful location, super friendly staff, Great food 🤩 Not too many dishes on the menu. We'll be back, the journey from Voerde / Lower Rhine was really worth it. Next time, among other things, be sure to try the highly praised Currywurst.

Absolute recommendation for a nice evening with friends and delicious food.

Food was delicious, service was a disaster

Unfortunately disappointing. Touted by promises like: "The best currywurst you've ever had," we decided to visit the restaurant and reserved a table... for 7 p.m. After arriving on time, we were allowed to wait 35 minutes until a waitress finally took our order. Another 20 minutes and a few complaints/inquiries later, the drinks arrived and with them the food. We then waited countless minutes for this. Finally, at 8:30 p.m. the food came and what can I say. The reasons given were illness and a lack of staff. The waitresses who were there tried hard, but well... you'll just sleep on the experience. The currywurst sauce, well... at least it was homemade... The taste miracle is different, as the landlord has probably never eaten a real currywurst before. The schnitzel suffered greatly from the breading. Unfortunately it was totally dry and the amount of sauce that went with it was insufficient. Well, finally the conclusion is: You can do it but disappointing for the price. You should definitely think twice about coming here. Price performance is inadequate and in the metropolitan region an exception that is only made once.

After we were satisfied on our first visit, we unfortunately didn't have a good experience today. Schnitzel much too dry. Service very slow and the staff stands outside and smokes. Never again

Unfortunately we had to wait over 30 minutes before we asked to order the drinks, for which we then waited another 25 minutes. We waited a total of 1.5 hours for the food. You were actually simply ignored. Quite a shame. Goulash was very tasty, as was the currywurst. Unfortunately the schnitzel was just dry. The service and everything around it is really not satisfactory. It's actually a shame because the map is appealing.

We are regular guests in the miracle bag. Same today. Both the steak on the special menu and the currywurst menu were terrific. Everything just fits here. The great cuisine and the always friendly and attentive service. Over time, the “bag” has become our extended living room.

Unfortunately the restaurant was a big disappointment despite the good reviews here. The schnitzel was more bread than schnitzel and extremely dry. The fried potatoes were swimming in fat and had way too much pepper. The curry sauce was delicious. Drinks only arrived 35 minutes after we placed the order (35 minutes after arrival), so in total we waited over an hour for the first drink (after repeated requests). It was the same with dinner and dessert was forgotten. There was no apology. Really miserable

Soup and main course were exceptional, very tasty and beautifully presented. In addition to the normal menu, there are other regional and seasonal dishes on a blackboard. The service was friendly, attentive and unobtrusive.

There are thousands of restaurants in Essen and the surrounding area. The surprise bag definitely belongs in the top 3! The restaurant was completely refurnished in 2022. The owner couple has planned long and lovingly and thought everything through down to the last detail. No expense or effort was spared. Modern ambience, wooden floors, beautiful lava stone counter, high-quality furniture and behind the scenes a top modern kitchen. Anyone who knows gastro kitchens would love this equipment! The chef and his team of chefs: absolute virtuosos 👌 There is a stable basic menu and regularly changing dishes on the table. Only the finest meat, but also very sophisticated vegan dishes. From small dishes for small appetites to a five-course menu that fills the evening. And the service team is very nice and attentive. A top restaurant where the ambience invites you to linger, the service is good, the people are friendly and the food is delicious. We were here for Christmas dinner buffet style for 45 euros per person. The starter was ok, but also very small: 3 dips, baguette bread, antipasti, couscous salad. The main course was really tasty and also great for us vegetarians. However, the meat eaters didn't find it so exciting that only veal was offered. We were all extremely disappointed with the dessert. There should be brownie with port wine cherries. The brownie was a chocolate cake that was arranged carelessly and without tongs or anything similar, stacked on a plate. So you had to take it down by hand. The port wine cherries were slightly thickened morello cherries without port wine, and one searched in vain for spices. 45 euros is really steep for this offer. We really expected more.

It was a very nice evening. The ambience is warm and welcoming, the background noise is opaque. Pleasant to spend time there and enjoy the food. The portions of the food are large. You will definitely get full. The wines are sold at a great price; it is rare to see a restaurant like this that offers good wines at a fair price. From veggies to elaborate meat dishes, everyone can find what they are looking for. The service and the boss do a great job. You feel completely comfortable!

I was eating there alone because I was in Essen on business. I was welcomed very nicely, which is not always a given when you want to occupy a table alone. The atmosphere is very nice and pleasant. I had the fresh Sicilian style tagliatelle. They were ok! Simple pasta dish overall, perhaps with three slices of zucchini and 2-3 cherry tomatoes with capers and thyme, a really manageable portion for €16. As a rule, I can never manage pasta dishes, that wasn't the case here at all, I mean, pretty sporty, €16 for a simple dish isn't really enough to fill you up.

A delicious and sociable evening, in a beautiful atmosphere, the food was great, the service was great and friendly. The only drawback is the lack of hearing. The rounded end was dessert, we went home happy.

The concept is not often found, the range (also in terms of price) is unusually wide, as if they wanted to reach everyone: from basics of the best quality to impeccable veggie dishes and impeccable meat dishes. In a positive way, the menu is not extensive but focuses on freshness and the seasons. For travelers and the curious, there are occasional themed evenings with wine and food from European regions. Decent wine list. The service is friendly and attentive and fulfills all small extra requests. Price level very reasonable. The location, hidden in the culinary diaspora of the north of Essen, enriches it (5* for that) but makes you shy away from the spontaneous journey from the southern districts.

We stopped by spontaneously after visiting Emscherpark! We were very surprised: friendly welcome, nice atmosphere, great cuisine for meat eaters and vegetarians and so we had an all-round successful evening!

We spent a lovely evening with excellent food here with our children (6 and 9). Our starters were on the one hand unusual and on the other hand simply delicious with wonderfully coordinated components. The main courses were also very successful. The children were very enthusiastic about the schnitzel with fries and mashed potatoes with fish fingers. The homemade ice cream for the children in the cone rounded everything off wonderfully. The service was super friendly and the atmosphere was modern and inviting. We would love to come back.

Wir haben einen schönen Abend bei ausgezeichnetem Essen mit unseren Kindern (6 und 9) hier verbracht. Unsere Vorspeisen waren zum einen ausgefallen und zum anderen einfach köstlich mit wunderbar aufeinander abgestimmten Komponenten. Die Hauptgerichte waren auch sehr gelungen. Die Kinder waren vom Schnitzel mit Pommes und Kartoffelpüree mit fischstäbchen schwer begeistert. Das selbstgemachte Eis für die Kinder im Hörnchen haben alles wunderbar abgerundet. Der Service war super freundlich und das Ambiente modern und einladend. Wir kommen sehr gerne wieder.

Personally, I think it's a shame to give lower stars for the district, a table near the entrance or even for the fact that you don't seem to be able to put the sesame seeds from your plate to your mouth. Fine dining with a great ambience and very nice staff. We have been there twice now and are thrilled. The food is special and perfect for people who like to try something new. The prices are appropriate for the quality. The jazz music as accompaniment adapts to the concept of the restaurant. It is also child-friendly and there is even a special menu for younger guests.
