Thai-Viet Street Food Imbiss in Köln

As a Vietnamese American living in Houston, TX, I approve the pho here! The workers seem to be from Northern Vietnam so it’s slightly different than what I’m used to but still good. The pad Thai tastes more like pad see ew but that worked out for us because I prefer that! Two negatives tho, the cafe sua da was such a small amount and I wish they had larger soup spoons for me to drink the soup faster.

The chairs had no cushions and were somewhat uncomfortable. The walls and furnishings were a bit dirty and dusty. There were sauce splatters on the refrigerator. The sauce had an unpleasant taste. The pasta itself was alright. It was a nice experience, but I wouldn't repeat it.

It's clear that this place is operating under the table. A sign at the entrance states that card payments are only accepted for orders over €35. We pointed this out, as we didn't have any cash, and were then told to pay via PayPal. Immediately after this conversation, the sign on the door was changed to "Cash Only." The two of us were seated at a table for four, as there were no other available seats. After 10 minutes, the waitress came and, quite naturally, wanted to add two more guests to our admittedly cramped table. This should have been clarified beforehand, and we refused. From that point on, empty glasses and cutlery were removed one by one, clearly to make us feel like we should leave as quickly as possible. The rudeness when paying was the final straw.

The toilets were a disaster... The service was so-so, it could have been better. I can't comment on the food; we left out of frustration before even ordering.

Good food. The only downside was some chipped plates. I looked through the serving hatch at the back of the store while I was paying, and I could see where they wash the dishes, and there was a worn-out sponge I wouldn't even use to clean the bathroom with. Change it.

The pad thai is incredibly good and tasty, a fairly large dish in Spain, equivalent to almost two portions in a Thai restaurant. The place is welcoming and quiet, and the staff are very helpful and friendly.

The food was okay, and the price-performance ratio was generally reasonable. However, the dish was served in a non-stick pan whose Teflon surface already had noticeable scratches, revealing the metal in several places. This quickly gave the impression that particles of the coating might be coming loose, which is problematic from a hygiene and health perspective. Another issue concerns the organization in the dining area. Two employees seem to be responsible for seating guests and observing them throughout their stay. This very direct and constant observation can easily create the feeling of being under constant surveillance or of being expected to leave as quickly as possible. A particularly unpleasant situation occurred towards the end of my visit: When I went to the restroom and waited there briefly, one of the people responsible for seating followed me, apparently to see what I was doing. I found this behavior extremely unpleasant and inappropriate. In conclusion, while the food was decent, the way guests were treated unfortunately did not meet the standards of friendly and professional service.

The restaurant is nice and beautiful, but the food leaves much to be desired. At a table of 5 people, we all ordered different dishes to try. They were all awful! The dish with curry sauce and chicken had a very strong color, it must have been artificial coloring, and the chicken was colorless and bland. It seemed like it was boiled in water and poured onto the plate. The fried chicken dish was inedible. The fried chicken was pressed down, it didn't even look like chicken and it wasn't crispy. The crepes on rice paper with shrimp had no seasoning at all, they only tasted like vegetables, not even the sauce saved them. In short, I don't recommend anyone eat there.

Excellent food, very fresh and tasty. We ate here twice and both times 10/10. Highly recommend. Very friendly staff and great menu to choose from. Good sized portions and fair priced.

The tea was from the previous day, and I was told that jasmine tea is sometimes left to stand for a day to develop its aroma. I didn't drink it, but I was still charged for it. It was very bitter. Furthermore, I didn't receive a receipt.

We have a little family tradition: every time we visit Germany, we absolutely have to hunt down the best Thai or Vietnamese spot in whichever city we’re in. This trip took us to Cologne, and after some quick research we ended up at Thai-Viet Street Food (the little place near Rudolfplatz/Chrümergürtel). We ordered our usual “test lineup”: Tom Yum Goong ★★★★★ Perfectly spicy-sour balance, lots of plump shrimp, lemongrass and galangal screaming fresh, and that unmistakable fragrant broth. One of the best we’ve ever had in Europe. Som Tam (Papaya Salad) ★★★★★ Textbook: crunchy green papaya, punchy lime-chili-fish sauce dressing, roasted peanuts, cherry tomatoes, and green beans. Exactly the right amount of heat and funk. Chicken Satay ★★★★★ Tender, smoky grilled skewers with a gorgeous turmeric glow. The peanut sauce was rich, slightly sweet, and properly thick – you actually wanted to spoon it up when the meat was gone. Pad Thai ★★★★★ Not too sweet (huge pet peeve avoided), perfect wok hei, bouncy rice noodles, tons of bean sprouts, egg, tofu, shrimp and crushed peanuts. Came with lime and chili flakes on the side – just like in Thailand. Panang Curry (beef) ★★★★★ Creamy, aromatic, mildly spicy with that distinctive kaffir lime leaf perfume. Tender beef slices and exactly the right amount of coconut milk richness without being heavy. Portions are very generous – we ordered five dishes for two adults and still took some home. Prices are almost suspiciously fair for Cologne city center: everything together (with two big Singha beers) came to just over €50. For this quality and quantity that’s basically a steal. Service was fast and super friendly, the place is small and casual (a few tables inside + some outside when weather allows), and everything tastes freshly made – you can see the wok station from most seats. Verdict: Easily the best Thai-Vietnamese meal we’ve had in Germany so far, and it has now become our official “must revisit every time we’re in Cologne” spot. If you’re anywhere near the Belgian Quarter or the ring road, do yourself a favor and go. You won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended! 🚀

Well, its been the third time I return here, since I am going to köln for business reasons, I was looking for a great place to eat, and I found it. Will definitely return every time I am around the city. Authentic flavors and simple yet well prepared food. The best proof that honest cuisine will probably always be the most enjoyable. Thanks.

Five stars for value for money and the very friendly staff and atmosphere. Of course, you can't expect authentic Thai or Vietnamese dishes at these prices – anyone who's ever bought the ingredients for them at an Asian grocery store knows that ;-) And even if the dish wasn't exactly what you'd expect from the name, it was delicious!

The food was delicious and the service was excellent. If you're ever in Cologne city center, you should definitely stop by :)

Very nice, I'll definitely come back! Unfortunately, it can get a bit cramped when the place is full. But the food is fantastic and the staff are very friendly. Just remember that they don't accept card payments. :)

Amazing thai and vietnamese food. We also received a delicious thai green iced tea on the house!

The food is typical Asian takeaway fare and rather mediocre. What really bothered me, however, was the poor service. The waiters and waitresses preferred chatting amongst themselves to serving the customers. Furthermore, I was incredibly annoyed that card payments were only accepted for amounts over €35. When I insisted on a receipt, the waitress rolled her eyes and turned away in disgust. I had to ask for one twice more. I don't want to make any accusations, but the high barrier to card payments and the reluctance to issue a printed receipt are often signs that someone is trying to evade taxes and line their own pockets.

A fantastic, relatively small but excellent Thai restaurant near the Alter Markt in Cologne, located in the "Kleine Budengasse" (Little Stalls Alley). 👍👍 A good, not-too-extensive menu, from which every dish and drink can be wholeheartedly recommended! 🥰 And the portions are more than generous and taste absolutely amazing! The prices are also very reasonable, especially in times like these! The restaurant is further enhanced by the very friendly, attentive, quick, and welcoming staff, from the front of house to the outstanding kitchen crew! 🥰 In short: For good, fresh, and varied food (also available for takeout! 👍), Restaurant Thai Viet comes highly recommended without reservation! 👍 👍 We will definitely be eating there again! 🥰 👍 👍

If you're looking for Asian food near Cologne Cathedral, this is the place to go. If you've never tried it before, you might find the flavors a bit different and the spices intense. The portions are also very filling.

Excellent food, atmosphere and most of all; excellent staff & service. We didn't make a reservation and the restaurant was almost full and fully reserved. Still the staff created a spot for us where we could have diner at ease. We saw this happen a few times when new costumers arrived. Muhammed, one of the very kind hosts helped us when we ordered a wrong dish, advised us and nothing was too much, even considering a full restaurant with plenty of other people to serve. The food itself was very nice, great taste and the right amounts. We can highly recommend Thai-Viet Street Food Imbiss.

The atmosphere is Thai and Vietnamese, and the food is delicious, so I'd love to go back. It's always crowded, so if you're going with more than three people, it might be a good idea to make a reservation.

⚠️❗️⚠️❗️CASH ONLY under 35€⚠️❗️⚠️❗️ Be Careful to enter this restaurant if you only have card because they don’t receive card payment only if you order more than 35 ! First I don’t like that there were so many tables and they asked all people to sit in the small tables without anyone sitting on other tables during the whole lunch. It’s not the regular lunch time but the time at 15:00! Second, in 2025, how can restaurants not receive the card. They should have noticed us before we ordered so we could have reconsidered if we stayed to dine in or not. The waiter was nice but the owner was not nice at all. Regarding to the food, pad Thai is normal not bad. Red curry is not recommended as the vegetable is not absorbed with the sauce. Overall, the CX can be improved, food is normal!

I’ve been a regular customer at this restaurant, but my recent experience was disappointing. I ordered fried noodles with beef and confirmed twice with the waitress that I did not want soup. However, I was served spicy beef noodle soup instead. When I raised the issue, the owner insisted it was my mistake and told me to read the menu, rather than acknowledging the misunderstanding. Clear communication is essential in customer service, and I hope the staff receives better training to avoid such situations. Unfortunately, due to this experience, I won’t be returning.

The pad thai had a great wok hei (wok aroma), the seasoning was slightly sour, and the fruit tea was delicious.

I've been a regular customer here for many years and was very rudely told to find another table, even though the restaurant was almost empty. I'm very disappointed and will now look for a Thai restaurant where I'm treated like a welcome guest.

The service was good, but the food was not authentic. The meat that should have been grilled was all fried, and the curry lacked the aroma of spices.

Everything here is just right: the Vietnamese/Thai food, the friendly service, and the great atmosphere. The menu offers numerous combinations of chicken, duck, and beef, always with various vegetables and, of course, rice, which is served in generous portions in attractive bowls. There are several teas to choose from; I had the ginger tea, brewed with fresh ginger. They also serve a decent, tasty Kölsch beer if you want to tone down the spiciness of your meal. Finally, the excellent value for money is worth mentioning. All in all, a great place to eat not far from Cologne Cathedral.

For us, it was one of the best Thai meals we've had here in Germany. We were just in Thailand in the spring and were craving delicious Thai food again. It was very busy, and there were already guests waiting outside. The atmosphere is okay, though admittedly not very cozy. It's a constant flow of people and doesn't really encourage lingering. But if you're aware of that, then it's absolutely worth a visit! The service was okay; we were a little forgotten, but that was probably because it was so incredibly busy.

Wow, we ate here on a whim and both the food and drinks were delicious. For a place advertised as a snack bar, it has more of a restaurant feel. Cozy wooden interior and lovely decor. We'll definitely be back! 😋

The portions and prices are good for this touristic area. While two of the staff members were very friendly, one was extremely grumpy and served us with quite a rude attitude. Also, this was the only restaurant where Hefeweizen was served without the proper glass. When I asked, they brought a regular glass instead—which feels quite wrong in Germany..

I really don't want to hate or rage-byte unnecessarily, but this was truly bottomless food! I'm sorry! I have a stomach ache right now.

It's an amazing place, plates are very good even for that cheap price, and it was amazingly tasty, no need to talk about the atmosphere and the service, you can see in the photos that they gave the asian feeling in the interior.

The best Vietnamese street food I've ever had in my life—simply WOW! The food arrived within 10-15 minutes and was incredibly delicious. The staff was friendly. The homemade drinks were also delicious. Overall, highly recommended.

Very good food for fair prices. The service is friendly and fast. The only problem I found is... it is extremely hot inside.. you feel like in a sauna. And I was there in September...

I had two summer rolls to take away yesterday. One had a large piece of black plastic (packaging material?), and the other had long hairs. I threw everything away. Maybe there was a mess in the kitchen, but that shouldn't happen. Unfortunately, I won't be eating there again; after that experience, I felt sick the whole evening.

The food is excellent, as are the prices. The service is... yuck!... definitely not the best. And please remember to bring cash because you have to spend more than €35 to pay by card. I also noticed a certain attitude toward serving some customers better than others: I had to sit down, get up to get the menu, and get up again to order and pay. The rest were served at the table. I'll just say that I'm not German, nor am I blond or blue-eyed...

Excellent restaurant with Vietnamese and Thai cuisine! Very cozy, with super fast service, friendly staff, and of course, delicious food :) The teas there are freshly made and highly recommended. The location is also very good, and with its proximity to the city center, it's a must-visit for lunch or dinner. The value for money is 10/10!

I tried pad thai here, it was not the best I’ve had but it was good. Portions are big I couldn’t finish it. It was a little crowded but servers and cooks had a great job. Got my order really fast. Recommend lychee martini.

Incredibly, incredibly good. Highly recommended! We've been there several times. All the dishes were delicious, the service was excellent, and the ambiance was a real eye-catcher!

Went there for lunch. The soups were delicious. But anyone can easily touch the cutlery because it's always upside down, with the part facing up that you put in your mouth. When you order roast duck with fried noodles, which costs 90g, or mango with roast chicken, vegetables, and rice, which costs 40c, and one of them isn't crispy, without the marinade, I start to wonder if they... Ordered wrong or didn't understand? Then the duck shouldn't have been crispy either. You order at the table, but payment is only possible at the counter. Where's the rest of the service?

Good for a quick bite to eat. Service was prompt, there weren't long waits, and the food was excellent all around. The vegetables were fresh, the duck was crispy, and the sauce was flavorful. As expected.

My dish, Bun Bo Nam Bo, was very sweet, with a lot of sugar in the sauce, but that's normal; South and Central Vietnamese cuisine is always very sweet. Very friendly service 👍, express service 👍.

Pseudo-Thai-Vietnamese food, perfectly staged for the Western palate. Neither authentically Vietnamese nor even remotely related to Thai food. But if the paying customer still enjoys it, then the restaurant has done everything right. The laab (Thai specialty) was a joke. Barely any minced chicken, mostly lettuce, no kaffir lime leaves, instead tons of Thai basil – it's Thai food after all 🤦 At least the crunch of the toasted rice was there. The fish sauce was bland, and without the lime leaves, the typical Tom Yum flavor was missing. So, a super spicy dish was served in a very, very boring way. The two main courses were also disappointing. The fish sauce on the buns doesn't deserve its name and bears absolutely no resemblance to the original. Watered down, no acidity, no sweetness, no spiciness, no umami. Considering that genuine Vietnamese are in the kitchen, it's completely disappointing. It was also carelessly slapped together and served completely differently than the beautifully presented picture on the menu. The rice dish was smaller than expected, but that wasn't the problem. It simply tasted like one of those run-of-the-mill dishes you'd get at any Asian restaurant/bistro/snack bar. Nothing special, no kick, boring. PARTICULARLY RUDE: Since we didn't have any cash with us, we asked upon entry if card payments were possible. Inconsolably, we were told that the card reader had unfortunately broken down today, and the technician wouldn't arrive until tomorrow, and that they were very uncomfortable with the whole inconvenience. After apologizing, we got cash from the ATM. When we paid, of course, we were charged without an invoice... Only after explicitly asking for a receipt was one provided. Weeks later, we saw online that this restaurant only accepts cash payments. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a scoundrel. 2 stars for cleverness, as the food is cooked the way the unsuspecting guest likes it.

Delicious fresh vegetables with meat, shrimp, fish, chicken, and vegan dishes of your choice in a sauce of your choice. Delicious homemade fresh fruit drinks. The food was very fresh and served straight away. The best fried noodles I've ever tasted. There were four of us, and our dog wasn't a problem. The portions were generous, too. Highly recommended.

Amazing rice, would recommend if you are decently hungry

Delicious, spicy food. You have to pay in cash, and they don't give you an option. In fact, there's a sign that says "cash payment is not possible today," and it seems like it happens every day. We only had a card, and we found out when we ate. We had to go out to get money. Otherwise, everything was fine.

I really enjoyed most of the food at this restaurant. The claypot rice was tasty, although the plain rice on the side was a bit disappointing. Unfortunately, the service left me with a very bad impression. On my second visit, I was refused a table even though another customer was seated just moments before me, and there was still a full hour left before closing time. What makes things worse is the inconsistent treatment of customers. Some guests are only allowed to pay in cash, while others are offered the option to pay by card. This kind of unequal service really ruins what could otherwise be a great dining experience.
