Schlupfwinkel Inh. Claus Burkhardt Restaurant in Freudenstadt

A true gem worth discovering. I stumbled upon Schlupfwinkel by chance many years ago (the very early 2000s) with some colleagues while walking in Freudenstadt. It's a truly historic establishment; it opened in 1945 under the name "Das Hexenhäusle." In 1981, it changed its name to "Restaurant Schlupfwinkel." In the early years of the new millennium, it officially added its business name and began operating under the name "Steak House." In any case, we were greeted with great warmth, and since the atmosphere is very relaxed, we were free to choose the table we wanted. Even today, when we come to Freudenstadt for work, we always stop for a couple of evenings to dine at Schlupfwinkel. The menu is extensive and is also available in English for international customers. What always strikes me is the originality of the menu, with creative and engaging options, including the option to cook on a soapstone—an experience that remains one of my favorites to this day. It's always a true culinary discovery! They serve a cut of raw meat on a stone heated to 300 degrees Celsius, explaining step-by-step how to cook it. The result is simply extraordinary. All washed down with the legendary Alpirsbacher beer (I also recommend a guided tour of the Alpirsbach brewery, just a few kilometers away). The lack of clutter and background music creates a truly relaxing atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a meal in complete tranquility and conversing easily. The prices are slightly higher than the local average, but considering the quality of the experience, I find them more than justified. To conclude the dinner, a typical Black Forest dessert or a local schnapps (Kirschwasser) make this gastronomic discovery a must for anyone visiting Freudenstadt. TOP!!!

The lady who served us, MORINA, was a delight, making an effort to understand and accommodate us in every way, with outstanding friendliness and professionalism. The food was exquisite and abundant, and the place was cozy. Recommended for anyone traveling to the Black Forest and stopping in Freudenstandt. OUTSTANDING

The restaurant is very nice. The service was absolutely perfect. I had a steak that was incredibly tender and delicious. We barely had to wait, even though it was quite busy. We will definitely eat there again.

We were with a larger group at Schlupfwinkel in Freudenstadt and received a very warm welcome from the very beginning. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive, and the tables were even arranged specially for our group size – truly top-notch service! What was particularly nice was that everything was set up child-friendly for our 3-year-old son, which immediately created a comfortable atmosphere. I had the "Men's Steak" with chili – it tasted simply fantastic: juicy, perfectly cooked, and served with fantastic side dishes. The others at the table were also more than satisfied. Everything came to the table quickly and freshly, despite our group size.

Great steaks, modern homemade drinks, and very friendly service. Unfortunately, the decor and ambiance weren't at all appealing. Old furniture, everything was a bit of a mismatch, and radio music with commercials. But I know how difficult it is to take over a restaurant and spend years modernizing it. It costs time, money, and nerves. The food was excellent, and that's what matters most. The rest can follow (hopefully soon ;)).

We stumbled upon this lovely restaurant by chance. The terrace is decorated with real plants, and the food is absolutely delicious. The dessert is especially recommended. The Black Forest-style cream puff was freshly filled and simply mmmmmm.

A hidden gem. We happened to pass by and stepped inside. We received a friendly welcome, and it was very quiet, so we could choose where to sit. The menu is extensive and also available in English. Their very fun and playful menu included food on a hot stone, and that was our choice. What a delight! A piece of raw meat was served on a 350-degree Celsius stone, and we received instructions on how to prepare it. It was truly delicious. There's no crowds or music, which makes it relaxed. You can chat normally. The prices are slightly above average, but we were on vacation here, and we factored that in. After the delicious meal, it was completely worth it. For dessert, we had a cream puff, but you need to have plenty of room in your stomach because it's incredibly filling.

The food was really good, and the service was friendly and attentive—nothing to complain about. However, the prices are significantly above average, especially since even simple side dishes like fries, spaetzle from the board, or fried potatoes are charged extra. This quickly adds up and ultimately makes the visit significantly more expensive than you'd expect for comparable quality elsewhere. Especially since steaks and other types of meat cost around €30 without any side dishes (no side dishes!). So, if you value good food, this is the place for you—but be aware that the price is quite substantial.

This hideaway is located in a somewhat tucked-away spot in the second row of the southbound arcades. The food and the service are very good. The prices are in line with what's become standard restaurant prices. Unlike some other restaurants, where prices have been raised and portions reduced, this isn't the case here. We'll be happy to come back from Rottenburg.

The five of us had dinner at the Orangery. We were all very pleased with our dishes. The exceptional espresso cup and the extraordinarily delicious biscuit were fantastic. Everyone received a chocolate bar as part of the bill. We'd be happy to come back.

It may look a bit unassuming from the outside, but it's a hidden gem. The service is very attentive and friendly, the seating is comfortable, and the food is truly outstanding. And it tasted fantastic. If we can make it there during our short vacation, we'd love to come back.

The restaurant was recommended to us as an insider tip. And that was it too. From the service at the beginning to the food to the payment...everything was perfect. We ate there as a family and were greeted very friendly. Service and the well-being of the guests were very important and we had the menu pretty quickly. This was kept relatively clear, which suggested to us that quality was being paid attention to. At the same time, our daughter received a children's card with colored pencils, which she immediately began to color. After a short time we already had our drinks and were able to place our food order. About 15 minutes later we received our food at the same time. You could tell straight away that everything is homemade here. The taste was a real treat. We were able to perceive the individual ingredients intensively but also harmoniously, which is something you miss today and still pay too much for. Guys, visit the insider tip and see for yourself. We were thrilled.

Cozy little restaurant. Super delicious food. I have rarely eaten such a great Wiener Schnitzel (veal). We are both full of praise. The roast roast with hand-scraped spaetzle was equally delicious. Yesterday (Saturday) we were late at lunchtime (but it was still enough within opening hours) and the service was courteous and friendly. Many thanks to the great chef and the friendly service. We were there this afternoon. Everything was super tasty. Homemade hollandaise sauce! Cleanly peeled asparagus. Viennese schnitzel delicious. A thank you to the chef and of course also to the service for the friendly welcome.

The food was really great, we had a steak with asparagus and after a 20km walk everything tastes good but it was really tasty. I had a very nice, friendly waitress who had a nice, easy chat. Eating there again in no time!!!

We had a very nice evening in the hiding place. The food was excellent and plentiful, there was hardly any waiting time, everything came quickly one after the other. The service lady is absolutely great, nice, funny and above all, how does she remember all of this? Incredible. And to top it all off, the homemade cream puffs, really great! The price-performance ratio is absolutely reasonable. We would be happy to come back on our next visit to Freudenstadt.

Wir haben uns entschlossen, (trotz ungerechtfertigten Rezessionen) das Nachtessen am Valentinstag, 14.02.2025 im Schlumpfwinkel zu geniessen. Ohne Reservation fragten wir um 18:15 Uhr um einen Tisch für zwei Personen. Die Wirtin kümmerte sich persönlich um unseren Wunsch und suchte sehr engagiert um eine Lösung, da eigentlich alle Plätze bereits vorreserviert waren. Wir bekamen aber, äusserst freundlich, einen Tisch zugewiesen, welcher erst ab 20:00 Uhr reserviert war. Besten Dank hierfür! Wir entschlossen uns für die Schweinsmedaillons, einmal mit Spätzle und einmal mit Bratkartoffeln. Beim Wein entschieden wir uns für den "Männle Spätburgunder" ein empfehlenswerter Tropfen aus der Region. Das Essen war hervorragend, wohlwissend, dass die Medaillons von verschiedenen Schweinen stammen und daher der genaue Garpunkt unterschiedlich sein kann. Der gemischte Salat umfasste 8 Sorten!! , wo gibt's denn sowas noch? und war ebenfalls total lecker. Zum Dessert hat meine Frau sich für den hausgemachten Rumtopf entschieden, ich mich für den "Nuss mit lustig". Eine konstruktive Kritik (und das ist die einzige Kritik!!) habe ich bei der Wirtin angebracht: Der hausgemachte Rumtopf, wurde mit Nusseis, anstelle von "Jamaika", oder "Rum Raisin" Eis serviert. Für das Ambiente, die Speisen, die Freundlichkeit, das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis und die herzliche Bewirtung können wir mit sehr gutem Gewissen 5☆☆☆☆☆ abgeben. Wir staunen darüber, woher die nachteiligen Rezessionen stammen und fragen uns, was damit bezweckt werden soll und ob das für Urlaubsgäste wie wir es sind für die Wahl eines Lokales hilfreich sein sollen? Eine Rezession darf kritisch, muss aber fundiert und gerechtfertigt sein, sonst lasst es lieber bleiben! Dem Wirteehepaar können wir nur bestätigen: Macht weiter so, wir kommen gerne wieder! A good restaurant for meat dishes, the quality is really good but could be even better compared to other restaurants. In connection with the ambience quality and price I find it a bit too expensive. Nevertheless, I can say for once it's a good choice in the district, service is great, there's also greetings from the kitchen.

We have had very good meals in the Schlupfwinkel restaurant several times. The price-performance ratio is good, especially on Wednesdays when the MENS CUT is on sale. By the way: you can also eat gluten-free - just let us know when ordering. 🥩🍷👍

Excellent cuisine and an exquisite menu.

Found something good to eat on a short tour through the Black Forest - and wasn't disappointed. Everything is made from scratch here, including the spaetzle. Asparagus was super tasty, as was veal escalope. Pork fillet is finally not fried to death. Only the homemade hollandaise didn't suit the taste at all - but you can easily ignore that because the wild garlic pesto, on the other hand, was wonderful. Service, as so often described, was friendly and attentive. The ambience in the “winter garden” is not that great, but you can easily ignore that, the food completely makes up for it. Repeat follows!

Rustic restaurant with culinary delicacies. The meat dishes from the hot stone are particularly special, just like in the Middle Ages, but you can also find them as a vegetarian. The desserts are also exceptionally good 👍

Good little steak house in a good location. Staff are always super friendly and happy to have fun. Special orders were no problem. Attention, the kitchen closes at 9 p.m. as far as I can tell. It's best to reserve a table in advance.
