Restaurant Athen in Neustadt am Rübenberge

My family and I have been eating there for over 20 years. For me, this restaurant, with Kosta Christou and his warm family, is like family itself. The food has always been exceptionally good; we've never been disappointed with the quality or preparation. We feel very comfortable there. Best regards

We were on a business trip and had a layover at a nearby hotel. In the evening, we went to this truly excellent Greek restaurant. Great atmosphere, very friendly staff, and the food was absolutely fantastic—all at a very fair price! Highly recommended, and thanks again for a lovely evening! 👍👍

The food is very good and the service friendly, however, the noise level/acoustics in the restaurant are unusually high, making conversation difficult. This unfortunately detracts somewhat from the overall dining experience.

We visited Athens for the first time on October 25, 2025. It was the best Greek restaurant we've ever experienced. The service, the staff, and the food were all top-notch. Above all, we only waited 15-20 minutes for our food, and it tasted amazing. It certainly won't be our last visit, and we look forward to returning.

This time we were there with a large group. No problems ordering, drinks were immediately restocked, and we paid at the cash register. The food, as always, was very good. I opted for the hot platter, which was very tasty, and a piece of cake with a chocolate center. It was a Thursday(!), but the place was still packed. 40 years of experience, they're the best.

Sunday lunchtime at 12 noon, we got a table without an appointment. The restaurant isn't wheelchair accessible. There are steps and no wheelchair roulette. Service was friendly and quick. The food took about 15 minutes to arrive. Everyone's taste is different, but the tzatziki was too garlicky. The salad was okay. The gyro was partly raw and so heavily seasoned that we couldn't eat it. The Cretan potatoes were served with a runny, light sauce with herbs, rather than mayonnaise. The taste was okay. The rest was delicious. The liver, souvlaki, suzuki, and rice were tender and well-seasoned. My conclusion: we won't be back. The waitress said that raw meat can happen, and every other guest eats gyros, and we're the first to complain. Reviews suggest otherwise.

I find the food exceptional. The service is fast and uncomplicated, but also competent. The ambiance could certainly be improved, but it still retains its old-school charm. The portion sizes vary, and the starter is fantastic. I may be repeating myself, but I really like it. 👍 👌 👍

Delicious food, generous portions and wonderful Greek hospitality. The Suzukakia and our entrees (Vorspeisen) of Tzatziki and filled peppers were so yummy! It's everything I love about Greek restaurants and their food in Germany.

We celebrated my birthday at the Athen. A big compliment to the kitchen: the dishes all arrived at the same time, they were very good, and everyone was very satisfied. A big compliment also to the service, who was very attentive and made every effort to ensure we had a pleasant evening. Thank you again to all the staff at the Athen restaurant.

The food is always delicious, prepared quickly, and (for me) more than sufficient—I've never had any negative experiences. The staff is always friendly and attentive. Prices are absolutely fair (compared to other Greek restaurants in the Neustädter Land region). It's always busy, especially on weekends, so reservations are recommended. The noise level in the restaurant is quite high when it's busy—something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to food. This can sometimes make conversation at your own table a bit tiring, especially if you're sitting in the middle of the room.

The gyro I ordered was extremely greasy and greasy. Inedible. The floor under the table was slippery with grease; it desperately needed a mopped.

Very tasty, friendly service, and a pleasant atmosphere. It's not ultra-modern, but it has its charm, and the food is excellent, well-priced, and not too expensive. The desserts are also very nicely presented.

It was our first time at the Athens restaurant and we really liked it. The service is very good, everything is very prompt. We sat outside, it was very comfortable and sheltered from the wind. We went home very satisfied with the food and will definitely come back.

Good food and great service. Unfortunately, everything was so cramped that two people could barely pass each other.

I can't recommend the gyros plate, it was very simple with just a few gyros and a little red rice. I finished eating after about 5 minutes, so I wasn't full either. In addition, the food came unusually quickly, but that doesn't always have to be a bad thing. Some pieces of meat were burnt or raw, and unfortunately the hot sauce wasn't right either. The PLATE cost €14

Have eaten there several times and will eat there again at any time. 🤗

Very good and recommended, we were there spontaneously and despite the fact that it was really full they made everything possible so that we could eat there.

Great food, very friendly attentive service, really good value for money and a huge selection. As a result, it is always very full, you can never go without a reservation, and it is also a bit noisy. But we're happy to accept that because of the consistently good quality of the food!

There were four of us there and the food was very good. The atmosphere was also quiet for the first hour, but since the restaurant was busy, a number of people probably had to speak louder than necessary ;-) All in all we will come back there again!

Food cannot be judged, but if you have reserved 6 seats at 8 p.m. and after standing in the restaurant for an hour you still don't have a seat, it is very, very frustrating. Especially since we had arranged to meet there for a pre-Christmas family reunion. Our journey to this place took 2.5 hours. The excuses for the staff's obvious mistake were terrible...e.g. the guests at the table designated for us don't want to leave...etc. As a solution, a table for four people was set up for us in the hallway, which we declined because there were six of us. Over an hour later we left the restaurant completely frustrated, hungry and slightly pissed off. By the way, it wasn't just our family that had this happen, a local lady and her guests had a similar experience. It's a shame, because the restaurant was very busy. Unfortunately, due to this negative outcome, I cannot provide any other information about the food. I hope this doesn't happen to several more guests who have made advance reservations.

It's always good! The food is tasty and the service, despite the stress, is in a great mood, friendly and always happy to have fun.

Service: We reserved a table at 2000 p.m., arrived at 1950 p.m. and were told the table wasn't free yet but it would be at any moment. Then it was 2015 p.m. we asked again and were told that the guests had been informed that the table was reserved and that they had to pay. However, the guests at the table in question continued to be served. At 2025 p.m. we were told that it would be ready at any moment, but the guests didn't want to leave & when we sat down the food would go very quickly. In 2035 there was a free ouzo. At 2040 o'clock part of the table was simply taken away from the guests and pushed to the side into the room. Also with the benches. Then they said that this was our table. The guests in question continued to be served. There were 6 of us, there was a maximum of space for 5 at the table. We were then disappointed and went to another Greek restaurant. From that evening onwards we weren't the only ones whose reservations didn't work out. A group of four didn't get their table until around 2030 and were told the restaurant was overbooked. Eat: We've eaten there before and it's fair to say that the food is very good. However, I have to say, we won't be visiting the restaurant again in the future because they seem to have massive problems in the organization. It can't be that people make reservations weeks in advance, receive guests from far away and then leave them sitting, then you have to cancel later reservations or walk-in customers. Atmosphere that evening: Very crowded, therefore very loud, waitresses ran from the table to the kitchen, very stressful.

This was our first time at the Athens restaurant. We received a very warm welcome, the service staff was very friendly and accommodating. There was a good schnapps on the house, very tasty. The food was very tasty, I had the Neustädter grill plate, very tasty and enough. My wife had calamari, it was cooked perfectly, the aioli was to die for. All in all a great evening. Can be recommended without reservation.

As a new town resident, Athens is almost a must-visit restaurant. We really enjoy eating here and often. The food is always delicious and I always admire the team, the shop is always full, they have to run endlessly and are always nice and friendly. We always meet friends or acquaintances locally. Someone is always there too. For us the best restaurant and a very clear recommendation.

I ordered food there to take away. The food was very tasty, the salad was a good portion with lots of ingredients. However, what was a shame was the rice. It was really a very small portion. I will definitely come back, the taste was simply convincing! Hopefully next time with a real portion of rice :)

I'm always amazed at the reviews here, but oh well. Luckily, tastes are different. I don't want to complain about the portion sizes here, but sorry people from Athens. You really need to do something with your spices. We ate with you with 6 people and it was the same as it was 2 years ago. No matter what you eat. Everything tastes like a spice. And you can taste it for another 2 days. We all agreed on that. It's a shame actually. Otherwise it's really comfortable with you.

The restaurant is very large and also suitable for celebrations. The atmosphere is nice, the food is delicious and the staff is friendly. Unfortunately it is not wheelchair accessible as there are a few steps. Otherwise everything is ok.

Wir sind alle sehr pingelig was Essen angeht und haben schon sämtliche Griechen in der Umgebung ausprobiert... waren alle nicht besonders lecker. Aber Athen hat uns komplett überzeugt. Ein typisch Griechisches Restaurant mit landestypischer Küche. Zusätzlich werden aber auch typisch Deutsche Gerichte angeboten, Die Bedienung ist freundlich aber oft kurz angebunden. Die Speisen waren in Ordnung, gut gegart, vielleicht ein bißchen übergart. Die Auswahl ist mehr als ausreichend. Dieser Betrieb sponsoret den Jugend Fußball Verein Neustädter Land e.V. was ansich sehr lobenswert ist. Wenn allerdings eine Mannschaft der C-Jugend mit 14 Teilnehmern plus Trainer zu dinnieren einfällt und lautstark intern diskutieren, ist es leider allerdings sowohl mit Gemütlichkeit, als auch mit einer gesitteten Unterhaltung vorbei! Disziplin würde hier sehr helfen und das Restaurant attracktiver machen.

Dieses Restaurant ist es immer wieder wert anzufahren! Es gibt einfach keinen besseren Griechen der eine so hervorragende Küche hat, es schmeckt einfach alles super lecker, original! Der Service und die Schnelligkeit der Bestellung ist unschlagbar, auch das sie einem alle Wünsche erfüllen, die man in der Zusammensetzung auf der Karte halt nicht findet. Und alle immer super freundlich!! Deshalb nimmt man auch sehr gerne eine längere Anfahrt in Kauf!

Ich war im Urlaub mit einer lieben Freundin dort Essen. Es war absolut fantastisch. Portionsgröße sowie Preis, nahezu unschlagbar. Ganz toller Service, trotz vieler Gäste nur kurze Wartezeiten. Geschmacklich 5 Sterne, es ist ein sehr schönes und toll eingerichtetes Restaurant. Wir kommen gerne wieder. 👍🏻 Ganz klare Empfehlung für alle Liebhaber des Guten Geschmacks in griechischer Atmosphäre.

Einfach nur Top sehr empfehlenswert

Wir haben zu zweit einen sehr schönen Abend verbracht. Die Bedienung war zuvorkommend und aufmerksam. Unsere Extrawünsche wurden alle erfüllt. Das Essen war sehr lecker und die Portionen waren vollkommen ausreichend, ohne den halben Teller voll zurückgehen lassen zu müssen. Mein überbackenes Gyros in Metaxasauce war in der Sauce sogar noch knusprig und sehr mager. Der Reis war sehr gut abgeschmeckt und eine gute Beilage zum Gyros. Der Saganaki war sehr cremig und mild und einer knusprigen Panade und das Tzatziki mild und ausgewogen. Das andere Essen war sehr mager und saftig und die Füllung aus Senf und Schafskäse sehr lecker. Die Pommes waren nicht fettig und schön knusprig. Insgesamt haben wir mit zwei großen Getränken, einem Kaffee, zwei Vorspeisen und zwei Hauptgerichten 51€ bezahlt. Für die hohe Qualität der Speisen und den sehr guten Service ein sehr angemessener Preis. Wir werden definitiv erneut Gäste sein.

Ich war das letzte Mal vor 20 Jahren dort und es ist immer noch genauso gut wie damals. Waren heute mit der Familie (10 Personen) da und alle sind begeistert. Es war lecker, schnell, ausreichend und preiswert. Immer wieder gerne 😋😋

Super Service, super Essen und alles schnell und sofort... hat echt Spaß gemacht und wir können euch in jedem Fall mit sehr gutem Gewissen weiterempfehlen!
