La Cantina in Hannover

La Cantina – Tapas, Aioli, and a Reconstructed Marble Staircase On November 7, 2025, hunger led me to Perlstraße 1 in Hanover, more precisely to La Cantina. A restaurant that has apparently been a part of the city for years – Hanover, after all, is one of Germany's largest trade fair cities and, according to Wikipedia, also known for its blend of modern and post-war architecture. In this setting, a Spanish restaurant seems almost exotic, yet it fits charmingly into the picture. Reservation or not? I was told that on weekends, it's nearly impossible to get a table without a reservation. I arrived early – and lo and behold, I was able to get in without one. A small victory over restaurant logic. Ordering here is still done in the classic way, with a slip of paper on which you mark your tapas. Nostalgic, almost like being back in school, except this time aioli was on the agenda instead of vocabulary tests. Tapas and Aioli – Finally, No Used Motors The tapas were consistently delightful. The aioli, in particular, which many "Spaniards" consider a culinary stumbling block, was actually quite palatable here. The Pimientos de Padrón didn't look like peppers languishing in used cooking oil, but rather fresh and appetizing. The wines were also well-matched, and the prices remained reasonable – a rare balance of quality and cost. Service and Atmosphere The owner – or let's call her the boss – was friendly, courteous, and quick to engage in conversation. The staff as a whole seemed attentive without being intrusive. One felt welcome, not rushed through. In Hanover, where restaurants often fluctuate between trade fair visitors and regular customers, this was a welcome change. Curious Detail – Reconstructed Marble in the Cellar A trip to the restroom revealed a small architectural curiosity: stair treads made of artificial stone, also known as reconstructed marble, a typical material of the 1950s. The food has nothing to do with it, but it shows that even the walk down to the basement here is like stepping back in time. In conclusion, La Cantina isn't a place for culinary revolutions, but for honest tapas, good aioli, and friendly service. Anyone in Hanover who's longing for a taste of Spain should stop by – and while on their way to the restroom, take a look at the stairs. Sometimes history tastes good even without salt.

A typical tapas restaurant that delivers on its promise. Typical tapas, mostly convenience food rather than homemade. But a good selection of alternative dishes on the daily specials menu. Super friendly and fast service despite the large evening rush.

Our family has been coming here to eat regularly for a long time. The best olives in the whole city!!! The food is delicious, the portions are good, the service is super friendly and always good for a pleasant surprise. The food was very tasty (tapas). The chairs were a bit uncomfortable for extended periods of sitting. The tabletop was slightly sticky. That wasn't ideal.

The bread, garlic mayonnaise, and olives were simply outstanding as a starter. The food was also very tasty – I would definitely go again.

Great people with fantastic tapas. I was in Hanover for work and it was my first time at La Cantina. It certainly won't be the last. I travel to Spain quite often and enjoy eating tapas there. These are definitely a 10 out of 10!!! See you soon!!!

When I made my reservation over the phone, I was asked to bring cash. The food was good. The ambiance wasn't great; autumn leaves were still lying under the tables next to the trash outside. The service was really bad. It was our first time there and we won't be back.

Super cute place with friendly service and delicious tapas – even the vegetarian options alone left us more than full! I particularly liked the spinach (with chickpeas or mushrooms)… It's just quite busy and therefore noisy, so I would always recommend making a reservation. But it's perfect for a fun evening with friends. Definitely worth a visit!

Really delicious food. I particularly like the selection of vegetarian tapas. Nice service and a suitable choice of music takes you to Andalusia for a moment. I'd love to come back.

Despite the numerous good reviews, I can't give a particularly good rating. Sticky, dirty table. Sticky floor. Great atmosphere. Now, after Easter, there are still Christmas decorations on the windowsill. Worn dishes. The food was OK to good. Service good. Maybe we were just unlucky?

I've been eating here for years and the food has always been delicious. The service is always friendly and kind. Wishes never remain unfulfilled. You shouldn't order too many tapas and underestimate how quickly you'll get full 😅 Prices have also remained down-to-earth and I'll always be happy to go there. :) I can only recommend it.

We've been there again for a long time. The food was very good. Were there quite early. Later a lot of guests came and it got loud. We'd love to come back.

Because of the many good reviews, we tested La Cantina today. We made a reservation for 3 a good week in advance and got a small table right at the front door with a small child. The service was friendly and good and responded immediately to information such as a lack of soap in the (very cold) women's toilet. The tapas were served quickly, but unfortunately they didn't completely impress us.

Always friendly, courteous and attentive staff. Large selection of very tasty tapas. Great value for money. We were at La Cantina on December 31, 2024 (not for the first time). The restaurant was full. Nevertheless, everyone was (as always) very nice and attentive and we didn't have to wait long for our food. Everything tasted delicious and the food was brought to the table with a smile. If you're not into "fancy", you're in good hands here. It was also possible to have a good conversation at the table, even though it was packed. We would love to come back and can fully recommend the restaurant!

We visited La Cantina restaurant today, New Year's Eve, and received exceptional service. Despite lacking reservations and the restaurant being fully booked, the staff were incredibly kind and accommodating, securing a table for us. The food was delicious and plentiful. We ordered two dishes, which were more than enough. Once again, thank you for the kindness and outstanding service.

Das Essen war eingedeutschter Standard aber lecker, keine Frage. Der Service schnell und freundlich. Leider roch es in dem Nebenraum ziemlich penetrant unangenehm, was das Essen nicht unterstützte. Die Ambiente allgemein war nicht wirklich einladend und kalt. Daher wahrscheinlich nicht nochmal.

During a spontaneous stopover in Hanover, we were lucky to get a table for two people, even without a prior reservation. A selection of vegetarian tapas were all very tasty, and my friend also really enjoyed the crispy chicken from the daily menu. And the service was very friendly and accommodating, we felt very comfortable and welcome. Thank you for the lovely and tasty evening :-).

Much nicer after the renovation. The selection on the menu was great, even for vegetarians. The four of us tried a number of tapas and were very satisfied! Yes, muslitos are ready-made almost everywhere, so what? Add the homemade lemon alioli and everything is good. The highlight for me were the mussels in white wine cream. At the end there is a delicious flan and a homemade lemonade. The service was nice and attentive ('ab tomorrow there's a diet...). We'll definitely be back!

Probably one of the cheapest tapas restaurants in the Hanover region - but there is a problem with the "freshness" of some of the dishes because some tapas are obviously frozen products. If you want to spend more money, you can get higher quality products elsewhere. For the money, La Cantina is completely okay. Service is always courteous - the restaurant is rather uncomfortable. As I said, prices are attractive.

Here the price matches the performance. The tapas are delicious and the service was super friendly. We've been there a few times now and you certainly can't go wrong with Cantina. Perfect for sharing and enjoying together.

I mainly ordered tapas and they were all excellent. The bread provided as an aperitif was good and went well with the accompanying garlic sauce. In particular, the staff's response is excellent. It was a comfortable and friendly atmosphere rather than a sophisticated atmosphere. Personally, I like this atmosphere better. Recommended if you are looking for an alternative to German food in Hannover.

I have been living in Hanover since 2002. I have been a regular customer of La Cantina since 2002. Why? Because it has beautiful music and exquisite cuisine and is hospitable. You can get all of this for little money.

I've been here many times and since I've ordered the tapas I've really enjoyed the food. The service ladies are nice and very helpful.

Small, cozy restaurant that is quite spacious inside and is furnished as expected. There are also outdoor spaces available in summer. The prices are quite high for a restaurant of this category. The grill plate costs an impressive €29.95 and the fish plate costs the same. Unfortunately, things don't look any better when it comes to drinks. Half a liter of sangria costs around €15 😬 You can eat there cheaper if you limit yourself to a few tapas - but that can quickly add up to €20 or more! The quality of the food was mixed. 🤔 The "Patatas Bravas" were quite tasty and the ham is also recommended. Unfortunately, for the remaining dishes, frozen and ready-made products are often used, some of which are really not worth the money. The service, which was always “tangible” and polite, should be rated positively. The innkeeper also gave us two schnapps. Nowadays it's no longer a given. Conclusion; "La Cantina" is a small, cozy shop that you can visit at any time for a glass of wine or a few tapas. For the reasons mentioned, the restaurant is less recommended for a large dinner.

There were three of us there and the store was pretty full. Nevertheless, we were served quickly and very nicely. The furnishings are getting old and are rather interesting to look at. Don't expect anything stylish, more like a kind of confetti of various decorative items. But that's completely ridiculous and rather charming! Because the food was really good and very tasty!
