Konnopke's Imbiss in Berlin

On my next visit to Berlin, I absolutely will not order a currywurst. Berlin currywurst is the worst thing ever. Konnopke's is even worse, as are all their other dishes, like the potato salad that comes out of a 10-liter bucket. When I asked why the currywurst wasn't sliced, the cheeky Berliner replied, "But I have a fork and knife."

I stopped in again, this time with a visitor from afar. It was delicious, just like it has been for what feels like 100 years. Personally, I find the selection a bit overwhelming. The famous Konnopke currywurst is somehow overlooked.

The service was friendly, but the food wasn't really to my taste. Which is ultimately just a matter of personal preference.

A cult snack bar in Berlin. For that reason, it's always very crowded. The "famous" currywurst is okay, but nothing special and, in my opinion, too expensive.

Konnopke's currywurst was a classic in East Germany; you had to queue for it, and it tasted great. Update October 2025: The long queues from East German times are gone. But the service, friendliness, and taste have improved again. The snack bar opens at 11 a.m.

Well, that's supposed to be a legend! What's definitely legendary is the price of the currywurst and beer! About twice as expensive as at my usual snack bar in Wedding. Once is enough.

I was recommend by a colleague who was in Berlin almost a decade ago saying their currywurst was the best he had tried during his visit in Berlin, so I had really high expectations. Pros, Tastes better than those shitty currywurst from no name bahnhof stands or street vendors. Cons, Some of those street vendors actually taste better than them and are way cheaper. Like come on 12 euros for 2 currywurst and a small fries? Tl;dr You should try it but it's definitely nothing special, just don't put your expectations too high.

Konnopke's Imbiss is located at Schönhauserallee 44b, 10435 Berlin. This establishment has a premium feel. I recently enjoyed a beer and a currywurst with potato salad there. Both were delicious. Unfortunately, it's not what it used to be.

Konnopke's isn't a fancy place, but all of Berlin loves it. The service is quick and the staff are always friendly and helpful. You have to go, you have to try it. Simply fantastic! Tip from a Berliner: Order a currywurst with fries and a lemonade. That's the complete package!

Tradition with flavor! Konnopke seems to be living off its name and tourists alone; the sausage doesn't taste like it used to, yet the prices have skyrocketed. Opening hours in Berlin and the surrounding area only until 6:00 PM are unacceptable and, in our opinion, speak volumes about their lack of business. It's a real shame; I always enjoyed coming here.

Unfortunately, it's not like it used to be. Different sauce. Different sausage. Dry fries. I ordered it without casing and still got it with skin on. The sauce just tastes like ketchup and has nothing to do with the old Konoppke. What a shame. My last sausage from you.

Honestly, it's just a regular sausage with cheap ketchup and a sprinkle of curry. I don't understand the appeal of this place. The sausage is tasteless and bland. Unfortunately, there are six pieces of sausage. The service is nice, but I don't come for the service.

If you're looking for sausage, this is the place to go! The bison sausage is also highly recommended!

There's always something going on, solid currywurst with authentic fries. The location is right in the heart of Berlin's hustle and bustle.

We went to Konnopke for lunch on Tuesday (two children and two adults). We had currywurst with fries, a Bockwurst, and a Vienna sausage. The currywurst was delicious, and we all enjoyed the Bockwurst. The staff were very friendly. Konnopke is a snack bar with standing tables, but there's also an annex with seating. (You're protected from the rain and pigeons.)

A classic, the currywurst was absolutely amazing. We'd gladly return. Very friendly staff despite the very busy crowds.

The currywurst tasted cheap and awful, but unfortunately, it wasn't cheap at all; a currywurst with fries cost me €7.30. Aside from the food, the service was friendly and quick.

I've been a regular customer here for over 45 years! I've never been disappointed!

A must visit place in Berlin. According to some it's the birthplace of the famous currywhurst. Located under the raised train track in the middle of a working class neighborhood it is an interesting place visit, even if you don't believe the legend. The line was relatively short, service was vast and friendly. The choices are different types of sausage. Some are ready to take, other you need to wait a little bit for. I guess it depends on the popularity. Descent sausages, but nothing that will make you to come back to Berlin to eat it again. In any case it was worth a visit.

The Knoopke Currywurst shop used to be very good. Since the original sauce recipe was passed down, they now only use Werder ketchup. To me, it's just a standard currywurst. The best currywurst is still at Krasselt's Imbiss in Berlin.

The taste is still okay, but the portions have decreased significantly. I think it was better a few years ago, and there was more than there is today. It's a shame. The staff is nice...

Today, I went to Konnopke's Imbiß for the first time in years – and I thought I was going to have a heart attack! The sausage had shrunk to half its size. Literally a shrink sausage! And they wanted an outrageous €4.30 for it – with a roll. Then I knew why it was so empty at noon and not as busy as it used to be. Now it's just tourist junk.

Great fries, great service and super comfortable seating

We wanted to try the currywurst but were very disappointed: it was soaked in ketchup and you couldn't even taste the sausage. The fries were okay, nothing special. There were a few seats but they were on the side of a very noisy road, which wasn't very pleasant.

Cult currywurst in Prenzlauer Berg. Highly recommended and very tasty!

I can't live without it!!! While they have by far the most unusual opening hours in all of Prenzlauer Berg, they reliably have the best fries (always fresh, always crispy, always golden yellow) and the best sliced ​​fries (my tip: instead of currywurst, have the bratwurst converted into a currywurst...). Then they serve it nicely with spicy onions and fries. Every time, I make a mental note to take a photo of it—and every time, it's too late. Oh, and to the people in front of me in line the other day: There's a really simple trick—if you're nice to them, they'll be nice too. Then even the most complicated order will work. One more thing, because it's important: It's one of the very few restaurants to score 79 out of 80 points in the Pankow District Council's food inspection. So it couldn't be cleaner, and that's good to know.

The same problem as with every Berlin currywurst: (well) fried, not grilled. The sausage lacks flavor. Lots of tomato, less curry flavor. Service is good, busy. Ambience: open, loud, busy.

Yes, unfortunately, they're no longer serving meat skewers. No one could explain to me exactly why. The currywursts have changed in taste, but they taste good, but not like they did a few years ago. Easily accessible by U-2 to Eberswalderstrasse, the elevated train has an elevator! Seating with tables for those who don't like standing, see photos. The price of the currywurst is a bit high at €3.80, so what?

Considering that this snack bar is supposed to be a Berlin highlight, I can only say that it's good value for money, but nothing special. You don't have to go.

The sausage is truly excellent. Five stars for that alone! Unfortunately, the Schrippe (roll) leaves a lot to be desired: dry and not nearly crispy enough to stand up to the currywurst. The sauce tastes strongly of a sweet ketchup, nothing special, but perfectly fine. The staff and ambiance are top-notch, though: friendly, fast, and an absolutely authentic atmosphere. Bottom line: It's definitely fine for a quick snack, but not the place for a big currywurst moment. But if you're looking for the ultimate Berlin experience, this is the place where "good" becomes "jut."

I don't understand the hype. The sausage is okay, the sauce is nothing special. I've had much better. A good currywurst, but nothing more.

Maybe it's some cult place our cousin recommended. But two key issues prevent me from giving it more than one star. The food was just plain sausage. In my opinion, it wasn't seasoned at all and tasted bland. Plus, the sauces were pre-made, not homemade. Unless I'm mistaken, but still, it was very weak, with a supermarket-style taste. The prices were quite high for the small portions. Culinarily, the biggest disappointment in Berlin. And to make matters worse, after we finished our meal, the waiter yelled at us in German (I understand it's his language and he's in his own country, but we don't speak German), and we had no idea what he was talking about. It's simply a disgrace to treat a customer who just bought a meal and drinks for five people from you this way. He saw we didn't speak German, and he couldn't or wouldn't communicate in English. Eventually, we figured out he meant we should return the bottles to the containers, which is something he didn't even mention at the bar, only on the table, and only in German. If that was the point at all. Plus, it's located in the middle of a very busy intersection, where the noise and exhaust fumes definitely take away from the enjoyment of the meal. I don't recommend it. There are many more interesting, tastier, and nicer places in Berlin.

If you're obviously carrying a bike and ordering takeout, why isn't the order automatically handed to you in a bag? Why do you even have to ask? Please keep your eyes open (!) and think for yourself, I don't work in a circus. Culinary mass-produced goods, and unfortunately, the prices are now above what would be acceptable.

An absolute must-visit when visiting Berlin! The location, directly beneath a subway line, and the snack bar, mostly frequented by local Berliners, evoke memories of the good old days. The food is lovingly prepared and served by the ladies. It's charming!

Visited this well-known spot today and tried the currywurst. Everything was great, we'd love to come back. :-)

Pure cult – Berlin original! Konnopke's Imbiss is and remains an absolute institution in Berlin. Everything is top-notch – from the legendary currywurst to the crispy fries. Fresh, fast, and always served with that unique Berlin charm. Incredibly delicious, fair prices, and the atmosphere is simply cult. If you're in Berlin and haven't been here, you've really missed out! There's no doubt about it – this is cult! Konnopke's Imbiss – wow, this is Berlin at its finest! Currywurst at its finest, fries as crispy as they should be, and a price you can't complain about. Service is quick, to the point, and with heart – that's the Berlin way, that's how it should be! If you're in Berlin and don't stop by, you can just go home. This is a must-see, that's it!

Unfortunately, that wasn't good. Compared to before, the sausage has shrunk, and instead of a proper curry sauce, there's only powdered ketchup... what a pity.

As is often the case when something has a legendary reputation, expectations are simply too high. The food is decent, but there are snack bars that offer better currywurst—even in Berlin.

Wurst and pommes were delicious but not sure if it’s anything too special, despite the never endung queue. The place is definitely quite a vibe with a sheltered seating area too but the price seems a little too high.

I had the vegan version and my daughter the classic version, both with fries, both very tasty. We're from Dresden, and when planning our visit to Berlin, we had included an original currywurst. And since we were mostly in Mitte and the eastern part of the city, the choice naturally fell on Konnopke. And we didn't regret it. The wait time was okay, the staff were typically direct but friendly. The noise level takes some getting used to for country bumpkins like us, but it's bearable in a big city at a busy intersection... We'd love to come back again.

It was great to come back to Berlin after 18 years and seeing that not only Konnopkes had survived but is thriving. This time, I visited with my two sons, great food, great service, I even bought a T-shirt. You have to visit here if you love Currywurst.

I ordered a vegan currywurst. The person in front of me also got one with four halves. I got one with two. What a disgrace! They put mayo on the wrong fries, and the service was also rather unfriendly.

This was my first time at this snack bar and I was immediately impressed by the atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff, despite the stress, the food, and the cleanliness. Konopke's Imbiss is a true cult restaurant. Don't let the always long line put you off; it's almost part of the experience. Despite the crowds, service is quick and efficient. And the wait is worth it: the currywurst is absolutely top-notch and a must-try for any visit to Berlin!

Delicious, as always, but parking is a problem...

Unfortunately, it's not as good as I remembered it from my childhood. I grew up with Konnopke in Weissensee. Back then, the curry sauce was fantastic, and we usually bought two sausages. The broth was also delicious. Today, the curry sauce just tastes like ketchup with curry, and the broth is made from powder, tastes very salty, and like it comes from a packet. It costs a lot of money, though. Liza Minelli and a few other promoters can't make up for the decline in quality. Unfortunately, Konnopke is just a tourist rip-off.

I don’t like this seriously, it is very salty but since this is Germany’s traditional food, I think we tourists should probably give it s try. I like the store’s design I like it open-air. Overall service was friendly.

One of the most well known and oldest Currywurst place in Berlin, there are many debates which one is the best. 📍Place: it is located at Eberswalder Straße UBahn station, so easily approachable from downtown. It's basically a kiosk which has some outside seats covered from rain, but it's not heated in the winter so dress accordingly. 🍛 Food: we have tired the classic setup, 1 currywurst with fries, ketchup and mayo for €6.9. (2 currywursts would be €10.9). Overall it tasted good, however I would have expected a little more curry flavour overall, the wurst had quite neutral taste. Fries are from frozen potatoes, nothing extra. 👩🏻‍🍳 Service: it's basically an over the counter service from a kiosk, they speak English and explain the menu if it's not clear. You get your food immediately, so it's up to its name.

Had far far better currywurst in Berlin and all over Germany. It's hard to get it wrong. This is average but quite small portions and very overpriced because of its reputation. Big queues and nowhere to sit as well.

Once a top-notch place, now a flop now a purely touristy place. The price-performance ratio is no longer right, especially since the quality (of the smaller sausages) is no longer comparable to what it used to be. While it's still a cult favorite, it's no longer worth it – a shame!

Childhood memories immediately came flooding back. As a native Berliner, I naturally grew up with Konopke's curry. Konopke can't be described; you have to experience it for yourself, so go there and experience the authentic East Berlin atmosphere. You can't get more than that.

Currywurst is a must here. I've never had such a good meal (currywurst with fries). It's practically a must to come here by tram or S-Bahn. I'll be happy to come again.

We spent a long weekend in Berlin, and now we had to eat a currywurst that everyone is talking about. Honestly, we could have saved ourselves the trip and the 20 minutes of waiting in line. It didn't taste bad, but it wasn't a highlight either. I was shocked by the cold sauce; I thought it was the ultimate warm currywurst sauce. It could be that this is the standard in Berlin, cold "ketchup." Personally, I expected more. But maybe I just don't know. If you're ever in St. Egidien, Saxony, I think OBI has the best currywurst with a great sauce and various spicinesses.
