House of Small Wonder in Berlin

The food was absolutely great, there was 6 of us and we all ordered something different. No one spoke for nearly 10 minutes as it was that good. The staff were great, loved the layout.

Went there for brunch with family. It was close to lunch time and the Japanese options looked interesting, ended up having the Biscuit Benedict with the Wasabi-Hollandaise sauce. That was an inspired pairing by the creator, added a lingering kick to the dish. All perfectly cooked. Family had Croissant French Toast and proclaimed it as "best french toast ever". The dining room with high ceiling looks like an old factory room conversion; added to the ambience. Staff was friendly, and service quick. A definite place to return.

I find the restaurant too touristy. There are other beautiful corners and cafes to visit in Berlin. Expensive and you have to wait forever to find a place. By the way, the chocolate cake was very tasty. The Japanese breakfast wasn't really my thing, although I tried it once.

Mega!! When we are back in Berlin, there will be no breakfast in the hotel but only here. Super delicious!

Nice little restaurant with an oriental twist. We had a very nice meal here. We had taken the menu with drinks package. So you didn't have to choose yourself. Nice and easy. You got two dishes at a time. Starter, entree, main course and then dessert with coffee or tea. Dishes were sufficient for two people. However, we hadn't eaten much during the day, but we had done a lot, so we wanted something. The pace was high, but when we arrived it was not that busy. Perhaps it could have been a little slower. After finishing the meal, the lady at the counter asked if we had had enough or if we wanted anything else. She had a feeling we were hungry. That was also a bit true. I asked her if she could suggest anything else. She did. After dessert, tea and another glass of wine, we only had to pay for the menu and drinks package. Not the extra dish. We thought that was very thoughtful. It may be advisable to make a reservation. It is a small restaurant with nice dishes. It was just full. Maybe a little tip. When the guests left the table after paying. The lamp on the table was turned off. Let it burn nicely to give it some extra atmosphere. We sat at the second table where no one was sitting and it immediately became a lot darker. Maybe the visibility of the restaurant would be a little better. Saw a door where you can go in, but didn't know if it was right. I couldn't tell from the facade or the sign that indicated that dinner was served from 5:30 PM that it was there. Maybe it's also because we don't come from the area as holidaymakers. Can't say anything other than that it was great. 🥳

I've experienced okay several times. But, was disappointing a lot when I visited with my mom. The dishes and drinks tasted just poor and cold somehow, they were the same menu I used to order though. It felt like they gave us the leftover with the low-quality ingredients from a freezer. You can see the photo how different they look on the other reviews. Also, we've waited such a long time for all services even though it wasn’t busy, was impossible to claim the situation. Pretty depressing...

I like the vibe and dining environment here. Food is good. But maybe it would be better to provide customer with WiFi since the signal is really weak there and they only help to hang our jacket when we enter the restaurant. Need to grab it by yourself when you leave. I wonder if someone loses their clothes. In general, I like it 👍

Absolutely love the eggs Benedict layered over their signature bacon cookie and I keep coming back for a hearty brunch! Also, largest mimosa glass ever to pack all those vitamins!

The restaurant offers stunning furnishings and a great atmosphere, with a unique and interesting menu featuring top-quality ingredients. However, there is room for improvement in the service, as the staff doesn't seem particularly engaging or make much effort in terms of hospitality. Overall, though, I would still recommend it as one of the best brunch spots in Berlin, if not top 3!

I had high expectations as the store had been recommended to me many times. I wasn't completely satisfied, especially with the food. Today I ordered Okinawa taco rice, which unfortunately tasted average to bland. People at the table next to me had fantastic looking breakfasts. Maybe next time I'll come in the morning instead. Be sure to make a reservation!

The building is stunning and they did a good job decoration it. The place is gorgeous. They have several vegetarian/vegan options on the menu which is great! We had the zucchini noodles and the avocado toast, both were delicious although I doubt that the soup was fresh made. Service was rather chaotic and I had the impression they are understaffed. Until we had the chance to move from the bar to a table, we waited for a long time at the bar noticing the staff was running around with no/little attention to the customers

A cute cafe, but not like the pictures. :( It's not bright at all, it's very dark and it's reminiscent of an old Berlin pub... The food was okay but I personally didn't really like it. In addition, the food was lukewarm or almost cold. For the price I expect something different! Unfortunately I won't be coming back again.

Just loved it here. Setting is so authentically retro with original jazz and songs from the 1940s playing to add to theme. Really amazing building. Felt like I'd stepped back in time. Food was delicious and service was excellent. I can see why this is a treasure to stumble upon. I had an umeshu cocktail which was really good! Highly recommend this gem.

Really nice and charming place. I managed to get a seat on a Saturday lunch even though I hadn't booked in advance. Excellent quality food. Prices normal. Service in some ways could be improved: one of the waiters who served me seemed inattentive and forgot to give me change. As soon as I reminded him, however, he apologized and took action. When I return to Berlin, I will definitely return to this restaurant.

Beautiful cafe/restaurant with exquisite antique and vintage atmosphere. The attention to detail is superb and the Japanese refinement and sense of beauty is apparent. I had the ricotta hotcakes, which where delicious. The drinks were unique and tasty as well. My server as well as the rest of the staff were very kind and friendly and thankfully could accommodate me in English as I have terrible German. Special thanks to Nami at the bar who made incredible coffees and drinks and was such a pleasure to converse with. She is a wonderful barista and it was a pleasure to enjoy her craft. I recommend booking a table if possible as it seems quite popular. I was, however able to walk in and sit at the bar solo before it got too busy. I cannot recommend this cafe enough. It is a must visit if you are looking for a cosy, delicious, and relaxing brunch in a warm atmosphere. Thank you again to the whole team for an unforgettable experience.

Picturesque place in the heart of Berlin's Jewish Quarter. Prices according to the size of the portions. They also offer the menu in English and some waiters also speak Spanish. You must go with a reservation.

If you want a nice place for breakfast/brunch, this is the place. A creative menu, beautiful presentation, great flavors, and a nice atmosphere to boot. Plus, they gave us a pitcher of tap water. Big win!

We went there for breakfast on a lovely late summer morning. It is a beautiful atmosphere in the yard, with rustic furniture, lights and lots of green. The breakfast options are great, somewhat classic French with Japanese touches. Coffee is very good. Service is super duper friendly but a bit slow and inattentive. We will definitely go again!

Vegan soboro and onigri set was ok, miso soup was really good. But I didn’t like bloody marry.. And the price is high for this menu I guess

Had brunch at this wonderful place located a bit in a side street, the terrace in the back is very nice and quiet, went there on a monday morning so it wasnt that crowded. I ordered the Croque Madame, portion was generous, sandwich was good. I would also recommend ordering the Matcha Latte! Something very interesting about this place is also the architecture of the building, which was previously a Jewish girl school and many elements in the building are still retained in well condition. Definitely worth a visit! :)

Exceptional Asian cuisine, but if you don't speak English you won't enjoy it much. The English-speaking, very nice waitress justified this with a lack of staff, but this doesn't explain why there was no German menu. I would still highly recommend this restaurant

No morning in Berlin was complete until we’d had Brunch at House of Small Wonder. Although every food item we tried was exquisite, I could not pass up the Croissant French Toast and it became a staple order for me. The fresh juices and the coffees were equally delicious and a subtle Japanese influence shone through in all of the menu items. Service, decor and atmosphere were all fantastic - we particularly enjoyed dining in the outside courtyard. 😍🙏

We went for dinner during the Candyman popup and really enjoyed it. We split shrimp, a chicken salad, carbonara made with fluffy noodles, and a few other dishes. The carbonara was a hit, and I loved the shrimp. We sat outside, and the courtyard is lovely. I, sadly, cannot use chopsticks, so my only complaint is that we were not queried whether we needed forks at the outset. I had to wait around for it, and I think a simple inquiry at the start would be nice given that perhaps others are also like me. That aside, it was great, and we especially enjoyed the setting.

A quiet, cozy and comforting ambience that reminds me of my uncle's greenhouse back in Hawaii. It makes you feel like you want to spend the entire day here. The food is done humbly and perfectly with attention to detail in both flavor and aesthetic. I have every intention of returning however many times it takes to eat my way through the entire menu. UPDATE: I had to remove a star after my most recent visit. The food is still fantastic, that hasn't changed. The problem is that they've started instituting time limits on tables. Normally it wouldn't be a big deal since other restaurants do the same in order to flip tables and make a profit. The thing is that the time limit is noticeably shorter than most and it took 20 minutes to get the attention of someone to take our order in the first place. Trying and failing to get someone to take your order for 20 minutes and then being rushed out the door is understandably very frustrating. Also, we ordered their walnut and matcha cookies. A rare miss, here. I would avoid them as they are flavorless and dry. I love shortbread cookies but not these. It's like they were ready to crumble into dust when hit with a stiff breeze.

We hade great lunch at this restaurant! 🤩😍 It raised our impression on Berlin! We had two Japanese dishes that waiter recommended- and both were really delicious! 🤤 Thank you for short intro in ambience and restaurant history, we loved it! A cute hidden place which feels like a little garden. The dishes were good. The glasses were badly scratched probably a bit dirty, I wish they replaced them asap.

Relaxed environment and very well-kept location, with the possibility of eating both inside and outside. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, however there is no shortage of errors or misunderstandings due to lack of experience and the flow of customers. Inspired by Japanese cuisine, the food is varied and refined, but the flavor does not strike or intrigue. The restaurant is located in a central location in Berlin and offers dishes at very high prices compared to the local offer. Compared to the prices, the dishes are not worth the expense. The restaurant also provides a cover charge without providing any type of service, such as bread or similar.

Moody atmosphere for a sophisticated appetizer- style dinner. Portions are small but with a very researched taste, cocktails need to be tried out !

Wanted to like this place - been here for lunch before and it was ok. Stupidly decided to come for dinner to celebrate my child's birthday. We informed them it was a special occasion (they even acknowledged) but on the evening, they simply ignored it - was hoping something special but nothing.... We all took the €40 Chef menu and my god, it's a complete rip off - the "sharing portions" were tiny (barely enough for 1 person!) and we were still hungry afterwards. The space and staff are nice but the food needs major improvement (some dishes were way too salty). Won't come here again - should be renamed "House of small portions..."

Insgesamt sehr gemischtes Erlebnis. Die Getränkekarte dann doch recht reduziert, das Essen ist in Teilen kreativ, die Qualität ok, es sollte jeder was finden. Der sehr große Nachteil ist, dass die Rechnung nicht gesplittet werden kann. Es muss an einem Tisch eine Person für alle zahlen. Da man anscheinend nur mit Karte zahlen kann, muss klar sein, der Gesamtbetrag geht von einer Karte ab. Ob ich jetzt nur in englischer Sprache bestellen und kommunizieren kann, ist man ja mittlerweile gewohnt, aber die Bezahlsystematik ist völlig am äkunden vorbei. Ein Lokal, was ich wieder von meiner Liste streiche.

House of Small Wonder is a hidden gem for those who think standard cafes are too mainstream. This place feels like stepping into a lush, garden-themed escape from the concrete jungle. The menu's got enough fresh, inventive dishes to keep things interesting, and the vibe is so cool, you’ll want to snap a hundred pics. It’s like a hipster dreamland where you can sip artisanal coffee and pretend you’re living in a Pinterest board.

Food was toothsome, beautiful serving of dishes, very nice place in the yard - green and cozy. However, one glass was terribly scratched all around and they didn’t manage to pour a full glass of coffee. Also the service was a bit inconsiderate.

Tomato soup tasted like preservatives and fried eggs were either size 5 or served cropped, without original edges. Least complex gratin I’ve eaten, not seasoned. Thinking the Asian style menu may have items of interest though they appeared more pricey. I suppose I’d tell you don’t do a boring breakfast if you happen to be sitting at a table here! Lovely staff. Decent drinks range.

I find it super questionable as a restaurant in Germany not to have a German menu and not to speak German. Very disrespectful. The food was horrible and too salty, my cutlery was dirty and so was the tea water. Even though I asked nicely for something clean, the new teaspoon was even dirtier. The ambience outside is not particularly inviting either

Great food, but why am I begging for water on a €100 bill? Ordered mains, drinks, and tap water—everything arrived except the water. Gave them a pass until dessert, ordered cake, tea, and water again. Cake and tea came—still no water. Asked the waiter, he said it’s coming—10 minutes later, still nothing. Had to flag down another waitress, and only after complaining did the water finally appear. Ridiculous. For a menu inspired by Japanese cuisine, they should also adopt the hospitality—tap water is always on the table in Japan.

We had made a reservation and they wanted to sit us on a bench. We then asked for another place, which we got. Cost-intensive food with good quality, but I didn't find rice, egg & chicken without any additional sauce in a bowl for around €17 suitable. Waited about 20 minutes for the order to be taken. After dinner we were told that we could stay for another 15 minutes because the table would then be refilled. We found 100 euros for 4 small dishes and coffee to be quite expensive. We won't go again.

I hate fake humility. Honestly, it’s one of my pet peeves. If you’ve got something going on, show it off — flaunt it. I’m a professor and you will not believe how many students I’ve seen who have given up on themselves for God knows what reason. Nobody wins when people have a low opinion of themselves, nobody! Which is why I have an issue with the name of this wonderful establishment that treated me and my wife Iliana with such eye-watering friendliness and grace. House of small wonder? Try palace of gargantuan promise! Castle of nirvana! Villa of heavenly surprise! I loved how cute everything was. Actually, I was so hysterically charmed by the interior decoration, I thought I sensed a glint of worry in Iliana’s eye (I’ve had some past issues with my commitment to the opposite gender). But that’s just what a well designed place will do to a boy from Peoria, Illinois. We weren’t voted the city with the largest grins for no reason — and so I will continue to flaunt those pearly whites, those ivory panels of contentment. Despite it all, despite it all.

Japan fusion tapas. The food was plentiful for the dishes we ordered. The smashed cucumbers and the blue cheese mash potatoes were quite delicious. I will go back. During the day it is called "House of small wonder" During the evening it is called "CandyMan" They have separate the brunch/lunch and dinners names though it is the same menu. Cheers!

Cute courtyard and definitely worth a visit. However, value for money could be better. The matcha wasn't the best in Berlin but still okay. I find it confusing that you can't tell who is on the staff. I think that's probably part of the concept.

The brunch is delightful, and the food is excellent. The interior is stunning, making it a perfect spot to meet friends or business partners. The cozy yet modern design, with plenty of plants, adds to the atmosphere. However, the drinks were disappointing; both the mocha latte and cappuccino had far too much milk.

A very sweet place. A beautiful Sunday can start with a breakfast with friends here. The menu is interesting, the place is very strong. There can only be a bit of a queue, there were no reservations at last. For this reason, you can go a little early, it is not very big inside. A very nice breakfast experience. We definitely recommend it.

A beautiful courtyard surrounded by greenery. In the corridor located in the building and on the walls there is a photo from the time of operation of the Jewish school for girls. Friendly staff speak good English. The order was delivered very quickly. The cuisine can be classified as Japanese.

All I can actually say is WOW. I've never had such a good avocado breakfast. We were super excited. Luckily the two of us got a place on a Saturday morning without making a reservation. The service is friendly and took our order quickly. The freshly squeezed orange juice was delicious, as was the cappuccino! For breakfast I ate an avocado with two fried eggs, the tomato soup was included in the price. The tomato soup was really tasty, but the avocado tops it all off. It was that good! We had sweets. They were just great, the service was attentive and the space is very nice.

Maybe we're just not the target group in our late 50s? Basically it was delicious, although brunch really means something different and it had a friendly touch of “delivery”. Our breakfast was on the table just a few minutes after ordering (and poached eggs at that) and once the table was cleared there was no real possibility of re-ordering coffee ( The inner courtyard is really nice to sit in, just not to linger) as the table is quickly given away. And given the pricing, I find that to be quite sporty and unfriendly. We can't recommend it and won't be coming back. Too bad.

House of small wonder was definitely a treat in terms of flavour of Japanese fusion food. Let us start with the venue, the venue was super nice amd a very interesting architecture. They have a place to sit inside or outside. The service and staff, the staff was super friendly and really nice. Also very helping when we were not sure on what to order. Then the food was really tasty, had very nice presentation and did not take too long for the food to come. The items we ordered were the Smashed Cucumber, Salmon Tartare, Sesame Chilli Edamame, Popcorn shrimp, Agedashi Gomadofu, Potato Mochi, Matcha Roulade. So was it worth it? Yes, the flavor combined with the ambience and the staff. I was super happy to have had food here. Ps inside was not that full, but outside seating was completely occupied.

Tourist trap! This place is not worth the hype. Below-average food in an atmosphere that is aptly described as shaby-chic. Inconvenient reservation only with credit card; in case of no-show, €5 per person will be withheld as a penalty. A 10% tip will be added to the price without consultation! After 90 minutes you are forced to leave the table; sales have to be made here. If you like being ripped off like that just to belong, what's the point? - he should stop here.

Food taste is really tasty and as an Asian I approve the fusion food especially the carbonara udon. However, if you're looking for a big portion meal, I wouldn't recommend to eat here. Service is neat and responsive. Love the oldies building ambiance, outdoors and clean toilet.

This place is in a beautiful location, with thick, green vines climbing up the tall brick walls to add to the already wonderful atmosphere. The food overall was great, as was the service. Is great for a dinner with a friend.

Very nice atmosphere, especially if you can sit outside. Delicious food although the bread was a bit dry with the avocado smash. Service was very friendly. What was a bit of a shame is that the sitting time is only limited to 1.5 hours. At least they point this out in a very friendly manner, but I still think it's a bit stupid if you want to have a relaxed brunch.

Very good exceptional breakfast. No matter which plate we have tried so far, they have all been great. Cappuccino is always on point too. What more could you want :)

This place lives up to its name - what a gem. From the moment you walk into the restaurant, you're mesmerized by a beautiful garden with the best ambiance with radiating sun shining down as you grub. My group's favorite was the udon carbonara but mine was kakuni don. The pork was so tender it melted in my mouth and the miso soup to go with was absolute perfect. All of the staffs were also so friendly and had the best personality. This is one place to be remembered for a long long time and hope to be back one day!

I visited this establishment after reading many positive reviews, however, I found the service to be below expectations. It's the kind of place you might start avoiding due to the behavior of the waitstaff. As for the food, while it was flavorful, I felt that the quality didn't quite match the price. it. Is not the type of place I would come back to nor recommend to visit.

Great food in a really cute place but quite expensive. The glasses were worn and therefore didn't look very clean, which really doesn't have to be the case given the prices. In addition, the reservation process was strange: reservations can only be made using a credit card (from which fines are charged for no-shows) and you only have 90 minutes, otherwise you will be asked out.

The food was not good and the prices are excessive. Even though we had a reservation, the waitress urged us to leave even though we still had food on our plates because the table was reserved for other people. The manner was totally unfriendly and she simply placed the receipt on the table and she took the menu out of our hands because she didn't have enough of it even though we wanted to order something else. Of course we couldn't enjoy our food and had to eat it quickly. None of them spoke German. I'm not from Germany either, but you should at least try to speak the language since we are in the capital of Germany and not all people can speak English. If you want to enjoy a nice brunch in a trendy place, there are many other and better options in Berlin. This place is not worth the hype.

Really good food and super chill ambience

Very disappointing. Mediocre food, terrible presentation, drab courtyard - and weren't even given the option of sitting inside, very confusing layout and no signage, poor service, forced to pay together instead of separate bills, all in all I dont get all the hype... The potato gratin has to be one of the most disgusting things Ive seen let alone eaten in a long time - why on earth they call it gratin is beyond me, its just potato mush in a square. No wasabi on the eggs with wasabi, soup was marginally better than out of a tin... All very bizarre. And forcing me to pay for a person Id never met before is an absolute cheek - why? Too lazy to write 2 bills for 2 customers? Wt actual f?

Very disappointing. Food was average, it sounds much better than it tastes. The US style biscuits with the eggs benedict seemed like a nice idea but tastewise not good, too dry, too thick, too bland, not even a hint of wasabi either. The so-called potato gratin was some weird baby food compressed into an ugly beige square, the presentation was appalling, not even a hint of parsley or sth to break up the beige abomination swimming around on a far too big plate. The drinks, soup and salads were quite nice and seemed homemade and the atmosphere is not bad but with a little effort could be so much nicer. The absolute worst, however, was not only that no cash is accepted, which we at least knew in advance, but youre forced to pay for the people you're sitting with - never been so embarrassed in my life, having to pay for someone I barely know. How dare you! Such lazy unprofessionalism. With pen and paper it used to be possible to add up a table of 10 individually but now with all the advantages of modern technology they cant even be bothered to make separate bills. I would have liked to try their dinner menu but wont be back because of that.

We came because of the good reviews and the lovely atmosphere but our overall experience was disappointing. We waited 40 minutes to receive our coffees, and the food took at least 1h. We had the eggs with potato gratin which neither looked nice nor was it particularly tasty.

A really nice cafe. The kitchen closes relatively early (4 p.m.) and you are asked to leave very quickly. Paying separately was not possible, but was not shown at the beginning. Food was good but it came at a very different time (about 10 minutes)

If one wants the privilege of having dinner at this restaurant, one must use a reservation platform. Please note that in the event of a no-show, a cancellation fee of five euros must be paid per guest. We were there and I nevertheless found the €15 charge on my card today. Apparently I should have responded to an email asking me to confirm my presence. Isn't just paying the bill enough? The restaurant should definitely stop using such a cumbersome procedure. That doesn't even match the exquisite ambience and the select food. This shabbiness and now so much effort for me! Does that really have to be the case? The restaurant isn't that breathtaking.

I like the store very much. You can have breakfast/brunch here. The savory options have good portion sizes. Service is top and in English!

I had such a lovely experience when I visited right as the cafe opened. The service I received was stellar and one of the servers went out of her way to package a small to-go item perfectly. The food was tasty at a 4/5, latte at a 5/5, and ambience at a 5/5!

Eating in a pig's gallop: This should be taken literally, because at the "dishes for sharing" we were served many dishes in quick succession, most of them with pork. Unfortunately, the selection was quite boring for the demanding price. What was annoying was how “our concept” was explained to us several times in a very snooty way. We didn't get the tea or coffee (according to the menu or "concept"), although shortly after 9 p.m. we were told that the kitchen would be closing soon - in case we wanted a dessert. After the tables around us had been cleaned (we were the last guests in the large hall, but downstairs was still busy), the bill was brought to us without being asked at 9:30 p.m. 9.30 p.m. on Friday evening in Berlin-Mitte! It couldn't be less hospitable. last little wonder

After a short rest at the hotel, we went to the 'House of Small Wonder', a Japanese-inspired restaurant in the building of the former Jewish girls' school. The architecture is breathtaking, and the charming backyards of the neighboring Heckmann-Höfe offer art, culture and small shops. We ordered the Croque Madame, a crispy toast filled with a generous amount of melted cheese, béchamel sauce and spicy ham, topped with two perfectly cooked fried eggs. The side salad with fresh lettuce, roasted nuts and pomegranate seeds was a delight. The potato gratin we ordered with it was also wonderfully flavorful. A great experience in a beautiful location - ideal for special occasions or simply to treat yourself to something special. The atmosphere in the beautiful, leafy courtyard rounded off the experience perfectly. The 'House of Small Wonder' offers an exceptional culinary experience in a dreamlike setting. A clear recommendation for fans of Japanese cuisine and unique locations!
