Hohnstein Castle in Harztor

We went up to the castle ruins on a Saturday afternoon. She is beautiful. A rustic, very cozy inn invites you to linger. But unfortunately this is only possible with a reservation. On the lower floor there were 5 massive tables for up to 4-6 people. Each table was occupied by 1-2 people. A sixth table was free, probably that of the staff. The very friendly service asked at our request whether we could stay. Unfortunately this was not possible. It's a shame, after a hike we would have liked to warm up and have something to drink. But we were allowed to use the toilets for free. These were in the upper range. There was also a room with comfortable tables, which were unoccupied. There was also a kind of annex where tables were set, but this too was empty. From this we draw our conclusion: the owner doesn't need it... It's a shame...it would definitely have been worth it.

Goulash soup is highly recommended. Soup with clear broth was fine. Price performance is average. Particularly exciting for medieval enthusiasts or children because of the decoration

We had our wedding reception held there last year and both our guests and we were thrilled! With great attention to detail, we were treated to a wonderful time! The atmosphere of the castle and the friendliness of the staff, including the boss, who was personally at the grill, gave us an unforgettable day! The food was of high quality and enjoyed by everyone without exception! We look back on this celebration with joy and it certainly wasn't the last one we celebrated at the Burggasthof! You have to experience it!

We celebrated my son's wedding there... wow what a dream!! The welcome was given by the boss with bagpipes, pure goosebumps!!!! Service, food, everything was tip top, we had a wonderful time! Thank you very much for the great hospitality and service! Kitchen five stars!!!!!

A beautiful place to stay! Here you will experience true hospitality with good cuisine and friendly service. It's very cozy in the inn and you have a very nice view of the country from the beer garden. It is also possible to arrive by car, or you can easily reach the castle on foot and then fortify yourself with one of the delicious dishes and a good beer.

A beautiful place with a unique ambience. The food was great, the service excellent. Very friendly staff, children are very welcome and were able to see everything up close. The visit was a highlight not only because of its geographical location. At this point, thank you very much again!!!

Very nice castle inn! “Welcome to the Middle Ages” you could say. The “lord of the castle” likes to create this feeling and he does it very well. The food is great and the service is friendly. In summer, the terrace and the view over Neustadt and the surrounding area are one more reason to take the steep path. After the climb, hunger is guaranteed and the guilty conscience after the feast is limited. Of course you can also climb the mountain by car or bike.

It was a very successful evening. With advance reservations, we found a very nice place with 21 people on the upper floor. The service is excellent, quick and very friendly. All 21 people were served their food promptly and hot. We never had to go without anything or wait any longer. Many thanks to everyone. The ambience is typical of the castle and loving. The entire terrain is also beautiful. It's worth waiting for the sunset.

Cool and different place with a medieval theme. Super service with dedicated employees. Remember to set aside time for a daylight tour of the ruins before eating.

Absolutely recommended as a hiking trip or for a delicious meal. You have a great view of the surrounding area. It is a rustic restaurant with a sun terrace. The starters and main courses were prepared with finesse and we really enjoyed them. The subsequent coffee and cake/waffles were also great.

At first glance, it's relatively inconspicuous from the outside but very nice - inside it's really well furnished, very well done in an old-fashioned way, very lovingly decorated. Great staff, who make everything possible even when the house is full and there are full reservations, so that you can have really good and delicious food even without a reservation. Unfortunately, the toilet is upstairs and there are a few small steps at the entrance door. Therefore, unfortunately, not without difficulties when it comes to disabilities. The castle is well worth seeing and exciting - an unexpected little thing causes “oohhs” and “huuhhs”. But you have to look very closely in the dungeon! ;-)) We would love to come back!!

A real pearl in the southern Harz. Great castle ruins with a view without entry. The inn is very quaint and medieval, beautifully furnished... offers a great atmosphere, excursion options... a highlight! At best, reservations should be made for dining...

I was there for a knight's meal. It was fantastic, great atmosphere, nice service and delicious food.

The service was nice, but then it stops. Drinks completely overpriced. Fries totally over salted. The salad was flooded with oil. Catastrophe, never again.

A place with its own history. The restaurant is located in the historic castle ruins and the interior design is very appropriate. Pleasant, unobtrusive background music and attentive, guest-oriented staff. One had the slight feeling that behind everything, the pleasant ambience, the food took second place. The Argentinian steak was perfectly prepared, but in our opinion the portion size did not correspond to the price (34.80 euros). Instead of the promised baked potatoes, there were simple boiled potatoes with sour cream. The salad could be bigger. Nevertheless, we were happy with everything and got a nice gesture at the end - dessert panacotta on the house :)

Very nice place. The castle behind it is also accessible and very beautiful. It is recommended to drive up the path as the path is relatively strenuous. But otherwise a great restaurant with very nice staff

I went hiking with my dad visiting and we highly recommend it. The service staff is very accommodating and was able to fulfill all of our wishes, such as the vegan cappuccino. We will definitely come back next time we visit Neustadt! (HWN 98 is directly at the restaurant)

We were at Hohnstein Castle today on July 25th, 2024 and also stopped at the castle restaurant! It tasted very good, the service was quick and very friendly! We really enjoyed it and would love to come back! I know the castle from my childhood and I was very happy to see how much work has been done to preserve the structural substance! We ended up here spontaneously while passing through, looking for a warm meal. It was worth it! You can park down by the swimming pool and then walk up in 15 minutes to get some exercise, or drive further up by car. The restaurant has a beautiful terrace with a distant view. The interior of the restaurant has a medieval design, and there is a beautiful ballroom upstairs. The food was absolutely delicious! Really good cuisine!

Delicious and appropriate food for guests big and small in an absolutely unique atmosphere. A unique dramatic and empathetic portrayal of Count Hohnstein, especially when dealing with children. Absolute recommendation!

Very nice restaurant located high up. Only accessible on foot or by motorbike on a gravel road. NO CARS! Great view, large terrace directly below the castle ruins. Can be visited free of charge.

At the end of our hiking holiday we had dinner at the Burggasthof Hohnstein. Very tasty food, super friendly service and lovingly furnished ambience. We really liked it. We'd love to come back.

A visit is worth it as the place offers pure nature when the weather is nice. Food and service are good, but something is still possible. A great destination for hikers.

It is understandable that there is no food outside on Easter Sunday. Everything inside was reserved and full. But service and friendliness fell by the wayside for us.

The knight's dinner with live performance has been attended several times. It's always worth seeing. Guaranteed laughter from the first minute. We'll be back.

Must visit! We chose a snowy day to go to this restaurant, and instead of driving, we went hiking. The path to the restaurant was truly enjoyable. The forest greeted us beautifully. The scenery from above was exquisite! Such a lovely atmosphere. Inside of the restaurant, it was decorated with items from bygone eras, giving it a nostalgic feel. The staff were attentive as soon as we arrived, the orders were quick, and they were also polite and friendly. The food was also delicious. There were vegan options available too. I ordered a chicken dish. I would only change one thing about the appetizers served with the main course, there were too many potatoes, a heavy garlic yoghurt and too little salad which could have been balanced. Being at this restaurant was truly enjoyable. On the way back, we returned watching the stars under a clear sky.

After a hike we stopped at the castle inn. The ambience and theme of the castle is not only taken up in a cozy way, but also lived in detail. But my personal highlight was the schnitzel. I have rarely eaten such a delicious schnitzel with fresh mushrooms and croquettes recently. The whole thing in a wrestling atmosphere and a beautiful view of the place. Came here by chance, but definitely not for the last time. Then perhaps with an overnight stay in town and a delicious wine.

Great castle ruins, children have a lot of fun exploring. Afterwards lunch at the castle inn. Food was great here too. We were here for 3-4 hours. You should have seen it.

We had spiced meat and goulash. Both were delicious. The service was nice. The ambience suits the castle.

Rustic restaurant, menu matched it perfectly! Food (spiced meat and goulash soup) were very tasty!! Beforehand there was a small greeting from the house (warm baguette bread with self-made herb butter).

I can't complain. The schnitzel came quickly, the service is nice, the atmosphere is nice. However, in my opinion the selection of food and drinks is too small. Despite this point of criticism, I can only recommend the Gasthof Hohenstein to anyone who is looking for a very good overall package with first-class quality at an affordable price. Spontaneous call on Saturday lunchtime and promise for 3 adults for a knight's dinner evening. Boss as a medieval solo entertainer top. Funny, entertaining and interesting. 4 course menu tasted wonderful. Keep it up👍

Most beautiful atmosphere, in the old hunting lodge. and medieval still. The service was perfect even the cook comes and personally brings the food to the table. Quality was really perfect at all five meals, even prepared in a modern way. The only thing I would personally note would be to use a little more sauce for the schnitzel, but since the quality was really good, this isn't a drawback. For us, it's just a lot of sauce, but that's definitely a matter of taste. The portions were exactly the right size for everyone and the price was quite reasonable. As of 01/24 Keep it up, nothing can change.

Es war eine super gelungene Silvesterparty mit leckerem Essen, immer reichlich servierten Getränken aller Art, einem DJ der die Musik deiner Wahl spielte, Feuerwerk und allen angekündigten Highlights.

Die Wirtsleute super herzlich, auf zack und immer sehr bemüht es jeden Gast recht zu machen ! Egal wie oft wir schon hier oben zum Essen waren und das wohlgemerkt über mehrere Jahre, es schmeckt immer wieder hervorragend! Dankeschön für soviel Energie und Liebe die da reingesteckt werden!

Nach längerer Zeit erneut hier gewesen. Weiterhin kann man dieses Konzept, den Service und das fantastische Essen nicht gut genug loben. Eigentlich müsste man 6 Sterne vergeben. Weiterhin eine klare EMPFEHLUNG wenn man tolles Essen in grandioser Atmosphäre genießen will. Ein Traum, bis bald.

Essen war gut. Nicht zu klein oder zu groß. Bedienung freundlich. Aussicht super schön. Ambiente dem Motte getreu. Alles in allem einen Ausflug wert.

Der Aufstieg zur Burg Hohenstein und dessen Restaurant lohnt sich alle mal. Die Aussicht ist atemberaubend, vorallem zu morgen und Abendstunden. Das Essen im Restaurant ist gut, etwas teuer im Vergleich zu anderen wenn man bedenkt was man bekommt aber dass macht es mit der unglaublichen Aussicht wieder wett. Wer gerne wandern geht und sich an tollen Aussichten, sowie Geschichte und Bauwerken begeistern kann, dem kann ich die Burg und Gasthof nur wärmstens empfehlen. 👍🏻😊

Ein Lokal mit einer fantastischen Außenanlage und einer noch besseren Aussicht über Nordhausen. Der Weg ist zu Fuß etwas beschwerlich und man muss Glück haben, einen der begrenzten Parkplätze zu erwischen. Zuerst wussten wir gar nicht, dass wir uns in einem Lokal befinden, das bereits bei der Fernsehsendung "Dein Lokal Mein Lokal" den ersten Platz gewonnen hat, was uns nun noch mehr erfreute, hier zu Abend zu essen. Das erste, was uns jedoch eher weniger begeisterte, war die Speisekarte (beidseitig bedrucktes Blatt in Folie laminiert). Diese bringt einem das Gefühl, man sitzt in einem mittelmäßigen Imbiss. Dafür war die Karte mit sehr anregenden Speisen gefüllt, wo die Entscheidung nicht leicht fiel. Am Ende war es egal, welches Gericht bestellt wurde, bei jedem Gericht wurde eine Top-Leistung erbracht, und das auch kurz vor Küchenschluss. Abseits des Erscheinungsbildes der Speisekarte waren wir ebenfalls nicht begeistert von der Bedienung. Diese hatte gefühlt nur eines im Kopf: "Feierabend". Schlussendlich ein sehr schönes Lokal für viele Anlässe, ob Sonntagsausflug oder kurzer Stopp für Wanderer usw.
