Burgmühle-Freyburg in Freyburg (Unstrut)

Right on the water, great food and delicious cakes, a must visit!

We ate at the Burgmühle restaurant on August 2, 2025, and must strongly advise against visiting this establishment. We arrived at 5:30 p.m. – at that time, there were hardly any customers. Nevertheless, the men's restrooms (we didn't use the women's) were in poor condition. There were puddles of urine under the urinals, and there was "residue" in the toilet bowls. There was no paper to dry hands, and the drying machine was so dirty that I didn't want to use it. The carpet in front of the exit to the outdoor seating area looks nice, but it's not secured, so I slipped when I stepped on it. In addition, the windows were uncleaned, and the exterior walls were covered in cobwebs and fly debris (see picture). All of this could have been overlooked if the food had been good. I ordered the rump steak. What was served was a piece of inferior meat that had been cooked too slowly – raw inside and tough on the outside. The meat was also marbled and gristly. The fries were unsalted, and the portion was very small for the price. After the waitress repeatedly ignored me, I brought the "food" to the counter myself. Instead of an apology or a kind word, the person behind the counter called to the office: "The rump steak always goes back." It really makes you wonder why it's still on the menu. I wasn't asked if I wanted anything else and had to order a replacement on my own initiative. Overall, I felt like I – and not the bad food – was the problem. I ordered a wheat beer to go with the cheeseburger – but it never arrived. Even after asking again, the beer wasn't brought. Only when the burger was served did I have to order it again. I should have sent the burger back, too – but since I was hungry, I ate it. The burger patty was very thin and overcooked. The rest of the burger was completely cold – including the sauce in which half of it was dipped (for whatever reason). The burger contained far too much bitter lettuce. The fries were again unsalted, far too few in number – and smelled of fish. Only the side salad was okay. My friend's salad was generally okay, but drowned in basil dressing. It's also worth mentioning that while the restaurant can generally be described as wheelchair-accessible, the threshold to the outdoor seating area is only surmountable with a heavy electric wheelchair with considerable assistance. Furthermore, the tabletops are too short, so you sit very far from the table in a wheelchair with a footrest. For the rump steak disaster (which, at least, wasn't charged), there was no discount, no free drink, or even an apology at the checkout. Conclusion: Considering the quality of the food, the hygiene, and the level of service, the Burgmühle restaurant is absolutely not recommended. Whether it was an unfortunate coincidence or something related to the food – my girlfriend and I both had stomach aches and mild nausea the next day.

Always a delight! I've been to the Burgmühle several times now, and I'm always impressed. The food is simply top-notch – fresh, delicious, and prepared with love. My favorites are Hawaiian Pollo or Gorgonzola Gnocchi. The service is always warm, attentive, and very professional. You can tell that hospitality is a top priority here. The atmosphere is also fantastic – cozy, yet modern and stylish, on the beautiful Unstrut River in the heart of Freyburg. In short: Absolutely recommend it!

Really no card payment possible!

Great restaurant, food was also great, just a bit irritating that there weren't any vegetables on it. Mmmm, but otherwise everything was great. Even the manager works in the service department. A rare experience, and all the more wonderful. We'll be back.

We paid too much for too little service. Tough pork medallions with five baby potatoes and a lettuce leaf for €21 is very steep. My partner had salad that had also been sitting in the fridge for a while. The fries we ordered weren't brought, but we charged for them! The atmosphere is great, but unfortunately, you can't eat it. The ladies serving were nice, so we didn't say anything there...there would probably have been a language barrier. What a shame!

The location and ambiance are simply fantastic. Despite the beer garden being full, the food was served quickly and was delicious. The service was very attentive and friendly. We'd love to come back!

Three times, the waiter couldn't match the food to a specific table. In the end, the bill showed the wrong food, and, surprise, surprise... it was more expensive. Sorry. The setting is fine. But the rest is...

Our absolute favorite address on every motorcycle tour! We visit this wonderful restaurant regularly when we're out on our motorcycles, and it's always a real highlight. The stunning terrace with its magnificent view of the water immediately invites you to linger and provides a relaxing little escape from everyday life. The food is consistently excellent, no matter what you order; everything is fresh, lovingly prepared, and simply delicious. The welcome is always warm, the service attentive and friendly; you feel welcome from the very first moment. We would especially like to highlight the owner, who cares for her guests with palpable passion and great attention. Even special requests are fulfilled with a smile – something that's by no means a given and shows how much passion goes into their work. We were there again just today, had a fantastic meal, and are already looking forward to our next visit. Thank you so much for this perfect little escape. See you very soon!

Always warm & always delicious!

There were six of us at the Burgmühle. The first impression was really great, the ambiance by the river very idyllic. Unfortunately, the joy quickly faded. The cocktails are ready-made from the bottle and don't taste good. Charging an average of €10 for this is ridiculous. The bruschetta consisted of four untoasted (!) slices of baguette. The trout was so small, it was probably just a baby. It was served with two (!) potatoes, which had been halved to make it look "more substantial." Overall, the food was rather so-so in terms of taste and could have used more seasoning. The service was friendly, but there were certain language barriers. 3 out of 6 bills didn't match the menu prices! Overall, we were very disappointed and won't be coming back.

A fantastic restaurant, with very good staff and tasty cuisine.

Unfortunately, it was bad. We were asked to change tables after placing our order, which weren't reserved. We were about to leave completely, but were allowed to stay seated, BUT with a strict time limit. The €15.50 starter salad was a disgrace. Too salty. Doused in vinegar. Coleslaw from the supermarket barrel. No one asked if everything was okay, neither during the meal nor when clearing the plates. A truly huge disappointment. We were so looking forward to it. They only accept cash. Tip to the tax office. We definitely won't be back and can't recommend this restaurant under any circumstances. Oh yes, the staff is unfortunately unfriendly too. And judging by their reaction, they're also uncooperative. It always depends on the approach. And you were simply unfriendly. Your food was exactly as described, and if this was supposed to have been a main course, all the worse. Sorry!

We visited the Burgmühle with a group of 6 people, and everyone was completely satisfied! The location right on the water is simply stunning – very idyllic and perfect for relaxing. The decor is also incredibly cozy and designed with great attention to detail. You immediately feel at home. The food was truly delicious – fresh, well-seasoned, and beautifully presented. Everyone was very satisfied with their dish. The service was also super friendly and attentive. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening in a wonderful atmosphere. We would love to come back and highly recommend the Burgmühle!

Very beautifully located restaurant. Unfortunately, no card payments, which is actually a must these days (after chatting with others, this is probably always the case), and the waitress needs another service training! Nice ambiance (inside and out)

Very nicely located, clean and tidy restaurant. The service was friendly. Unfortunately, the food was really bad. My companion (a hunter) had ordered pork medallions. These are cut from the pork fillet, the most tender part of the pig. As soon as it was served, it was clear from the shape that it wasn't fillet. What's more, it was so tough that he left it on his plate. He was offered a new dish, but he declined. I wanted to try it too, but gave up after the first attempt. It's difficult to cook a piece of pork that hard. They then returned the favor with a drink, which was very friendly. But for €20 a dish, you should get what's on the menu. I had a zander fillet. As a fisherman, I've caught, filleted, and eaten plenty of zander. But even I had serious doubts about what was lying there on the plate, thickly breaded and covered in sauce. It was a fish, but the fillet of a noble fish was presented on the plate...and not hidden (see picture). As I said, everything about this restaurant is actually perfect, but the kitchen desperately needs work. And the restaurant management should urgently check whether the kitchen is actually preparing what's on the menu. I'll definitely go back and see if anything changes.

No card payments accepted 🤦🏻‍♂️. Everything was empty, but we were informed that our exact table was reserved from 5:30 PM. Luckily, we only wanted a "quick" drink. They could also work on the friendliness a bit more!!!

Folks, when I'm greeted with rules of conduct at the entrance...I find that intrusive. The food was good, the service was cold. The wine was too warm, but the price was too high. €7.90 for 0.2 liters, poured sparingly, isn't worth lingering over. The view from the terrace is very nice. All in all, we were disappointed!

We ate at the Burgmühle yesterday, and I have to say, I haven't had such a bad meal in a long time. The seasoned meat was inedible and, above all, the meat itself was indefinable. The salad was fresh, but the dressing wasn't particularly good. The cocktail was a ready-made product and tasted awful. For €8, you should definitely mix your own. We love going out to eat and are happy to spend a few euros more for good food and drinks, but I wouldn't recommend this. It's a shame, really, because the seating is very comfortable and the service is very friendly.

Despite the less than favorable reviews, we visited the Burgmühle with eight people and were pleasantly surprised in every respect. The location is excellent; you can sit right by the water. The furnishings, the terrace, and the decor are very tasteful. The service was attentive, very friendly, and most importantly, the food was simply delicious. All dishes arrived perfectly, and the value for money is also highly recommended. We will definitely be back on our next visit.

Today was the first time we were in the restaurant "Burgmühle" but definitely not the last time. Here you can relax on the terrace, watch the goings-on on the Unstrut and enjoy the good and fast service. Next time we will take more time and let us be treated to something.

A great restaurant located right on the Unstrut River, by the weir. The terrace is fantastic in nice autumn weather. The food was delicious, and the service staff was friendly and accommodating. We'd love to come back!

At the entrance to the restaurant there was a sign saying no card payment so I left.

We went in hungry and left hungry too. We ordered sliced ​​chicken with croquettes, it came in a very small baking dish with 5 mini croquettes, and that for a whopping €20. Then we had the vegetable curry with potatoes. It was also only a very small portion, with 2 small potatoes with remnants of the peel still stuck to them, and that for €17. You can't get enough of it. The restaurant smells of smoke because an employee smokes in his office and the door to the restaurant is open all the time. Not recommended.

We went out for dinner over the Christmas holidays and were very disappointed. The service was obviously just as unprepared as the kitchen for the full house: you were only allowed to choose overpriced dishes of poor quality from a small daily menu (five main courses, a starter soup, a side salad, no dessert). Children and vegetarians were not taken into account. People were very inflexible (e.g. no swapping of dumplings for potatoes was possible), orders were mixed up and some of the food was already cold and overcooked. Unfortunately, the great ambience could distract from the poor service and the lack of cooking skills. Not recommended on public holidays.

Great atmosphere, but unfortunately not sufficiently prepared for the Christmas season. You weren't allowed to eat from the normal menu, only from the small Christmas menu. There was nothing for vegetarians and children. All the dishes we chose were dry, cold and the meat was of poor quality. Unfortunately there was no flexibility in the choice of food. It was not possible to choose potatoes instead of dumplings. Too bad...

Were invited to a Christmas party at the Burgmühle. Ambience really amazed us. Very pretty and looks Italian at first glance. We were surprised that there was no sparkling wine in a restaurant in Freyburg. This meant you couldn't bump into things. Dishes are average and typically selected to suit German tastes. I just say schnitzel au four. Unfortunately there was only a cheese plate for vegetarians. Unfortunately, the wow effect of the meal was missing (spices, salt and simply love in the preparation).

The food was good but the service was poor. You don't feel welcome and you are still taken advantage of when it comes to the bill. In addition to the unfriendly waitress: There are discrepancies in the bill. If one wants a change that makes the dish more expensive, the price increases significantly. However, if it becomes cheaper, the price remains the same! I had asked for more mushrooms, but the waitress wanted to offer me extra sauce instead. I didn't know that I had to pay almost 5 euros for this little extra sauce that was actually offered! I liked the food but I won't go there again.

The food was very tasty. The staff is very attentive and friendly. When the weather is nice, it's worth taking a seat on the terrace with a view of the weir. Our dog also felt comfortable. Et was pampered with water and treats.

The view is great, the taste is okay, you can see the frying fat in the air when the sun shines, you will judge accordingly afterwards, card payment only possible on request. We no longer come to eat, especially to drink wine on the terrace.

We ended up in the Burgmühle by chance today. Due to the long opening hours. We were there with our little daughter (almost 1 year old). Despite having a child's chair, we were not offered one. Either way, the waitress was unfriendly from the start, visibly annoyed. My husband's food was good. I guess I made the wrong choice. Tomato soup has more water and pepper than tomato. Salting Maidalons with chanterelles. Well, the highlight is the waitress. Restaurant almost empty, later 8 people came to a table and the feeling of being overwhelmed or not wanting to eat started. The 8 person table was served very well but we were forgotten. We couldn't drink after ordering or paying. So I went to the counter to ask for payment. Because chatting with my colleague went well. I have rarely felt treated as disrespected as I was there. Apparently I prefer without a child and wishes come. With kind luck, off from the Erzgebirge. 😉

Was eating spareribs on Saturday October 4th, 2024. Terrible ! Cooked ribs with a ready-made barbecue sauce, the fries are also better available at any snack bar. All this for 22.90🙈 what a shame! This is how you scare away your guests. In addition, I asked for a seat reservation. I was answered: no space left, only in the winter garden. I got a seat in the restaurant and noticed that many seats were still free without a reservation sign…. Keep it up🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Matjes Housewives Art The food was well prepared, but unfortunately the taste was a flat 0. The potatoes neither scored points in terms of taste nor were they cooked. There was neither oil nor onion to be found on the matjes and the grilled vegetables didn't go well with it, let alone the homemade sauce that tasted like extended yogurt tasted good.

Had a schnitzel with fries. Standard food. Schnitzel very dry and therefore tough. Fries apparently counted out. But 2 slices of fried carrot. Great for €26.50. My companion's salad was okay. Not more. Coffee and milk are only available after asking three times. It's actually standard. Not recommended. I'm not really a complainer, but it's a waste of money

I ordered vegetables with curry cream sauce and potatoes (not from the menu, but from a separate notice) for €16.50. Unfortunately, what happened was a catastrophe. Thick curry cream mush in which you had to look for the vegetables. The potatoes were not included as a side dish, which I expected given the name of the dish and the price. The potatoes were hidden in the form of three small pieces in the curry cream mush. Important: If you are dissatisfied with the food here, you should complain immediately. Later complaints will not be accepted and the full price will be charged, in cash of course, as card payment is not possible. Goodwill is not known in this restaurant.

Food and service were very good

Service could be improved, the wine for €33 was served without wine cooling. After asking twice, the wine cooler was available. The entire dining room was covered in fog (probably came from the kitchen). The price-performance ratio simply doesn't fit (e.g. frozen croquettes). The location has much more potential.

Reserved a table for 15 people 2 months ago. There was no table reserved for us today. Luckily it was empty so we got a table. Room in the back. Room was a bit foggy as if the vent from the kitchen ended there. Place the order - everything came quite quickly, we only got the wine spritzer ourselves after 15 minutes. Starter came - was okay. Not everyone was finished yet when the main course arrived. There was no response to our request to wait. The actual schnitzel with cream mushrooms was ordered with cream sauce and the vegetables without mushrooms - food came with mushroom sauce and mushrooms. Food was returned - food came with cream sauce and mushrooms again. Okay, we made the mushrooms ourselves. Schnitzel came with more marinade around it than there was any meat in it. During the second trimming, I discovered a long hair - so I went back. On another plate, a hair between the side salad. As if that wasn't bad enough, tables and chairs were now being pushed around. When asked whether it was tasty, we of course answered honestly - everything was very matter-of-fact. The waitress's reactions - eyes blurred and "I can't help it." This restaurant was highly recommended to us, but it was the biggest letdown of the day - a shame

Wow! Discovered by chance and enjoyed! Terrace by the water with a view of the vineyards. It couldn't be better! Plus the great food, with a matching wine. Plus a friendly and attentive service team. This makes the wonderful short holiday in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region perfect!

We wanted to have lunch at the Burgmühle today, but unfortunately it didn't happen. After waiting half an hour we left again. The young waiter brought us the menus but then he lost interest in us. It's a shame, but we still had a wonderful meal in Freyburg. The star is available free of charge for half an hour while sitting in the beautiful ambience on the Unstrut.

One of the few restaurants and Freyburg that is always open and offers a view of the Unstrut. The food is more Italian, averagely good. Very courteous service.

You cannot pay by card at the Burgmühle. So take enough cash with you.

The atmosphere in this excursion restaurant, located directly on the Unstrut, with a beautiful terrace and a wonderful shady vine arbor is hard to beat. For that reason alone it is worth stopping by. The touring kayakers paddle past the small river, a few meters directly below the terrace, and now and then a rubber dinghy full of rafters paddles past. So something is required. It's really worth reading the website about the use of hydropower through your own power plant and the necessary fish ecological measures. The commitment of the operators is admirable. You can also enjoy the extensive range of wine from the region. As for the food, I can say that it was tasty. Since we were here in a large group and we had to choose the dishes when planning, we cannot give a detailed verdict here. The service was a bit sparse, but serving around 50 people from a group at the same time is not easy either.

The location of the restaurant by the river is very nice, wonderful outdoor seating. We only had drinks and ice cream, as well as a children's meal (french fries with fish fingers). That was all fine. Unfortunately there was no more cake (at coffee time! on the weekend). It also seemed as if there weren't enough service staff, which was a shame. Everything takes a little longer. The bill could only be paid in cash. I thought it was no longer up to date.

We were in this restaurant 8 years ago and were very satisfied. For this reason we visited it again today and were quite disappointed. At the entrance you were told that no card payment was possible. The service was nice, but the waiting times were too long. There were neither beer mats nor table decorations. The food tasted good, although the composition wasn't quite right, croquettes with chicken with tomato sauce. When a gentleman who looked like the caretaker asked how the food tasted and we expressed our opinion, we were told, “You ordered it that way!” Are you just asking out of decency? There was no light in the toilet, the hand dryer was broken, but paper towels were available, Just a shame. We were disappointed.

We were invited for dinner today. We ate very well. I had a tuna salad. I really enjoyed it. The location is very good right on the Unstrut. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We can recommend the restaurant, you can have a nice time here.

Price / performance is not right here, schnitzel with ragout fin gratinated - it was an industrial schnitzel with a teaspoon-sized amount of ragout fin gratinated, three half potatoes and very few grilled vegetables, all for 19.90 €, Better not!! Service also needs improvement, everything took a while, despite few guests..., never ever...!!!

The ambience is really nice. Otherwise... Well the service was so-so. The problem is really the food, you can expect more for the prices. The homemade herring sauce is sour cream and that's it. There were maybe three crumbs of pickles in there too. Just sad. The rest of the group didn't have anything particularly good either. Only the trout was recommended. It's to be expected that there isn't a large vegan selection in a restaurant like this in the country, but that they can't even do a vegan salad dressing... Wow

Sit by the weir and enjoy the peace and quiet. Some shaded areas. Makes a small impression, but is very comfortable. Lots of space.

Coffee and cake as well as the salad with chicken breast were very tasty. It was very cozy and relaxed with wonderful views of the vineyards and relaxing music.

I don't want to say anything worse than it actually is...or was, but what we were served on the plate yesterday was one of the most primitive things you can do to a guest. What's the use of the waiters being nice? What good is a great view of a water landscape, when the meal for a whopping 15 euros is nothing more than raw salad carelessly spread out on the plate, with a few strips of turkey breast on it (a maximum of 2 euros in material usage). The highlight: 2 slices of white bread that made you fear for your teeth. Simply primitive, tasteless and... an insolence beyond compare. Why is anyone who thinks they can prepare food... allowed to do so without training (certainly). And if someone did that after learning it through training... then that person has definitely "bought" the qualification or forgotten everything. You prepare a sandwich or cheese sandwich at home, pack it into your hiking backpack along with an apple and a bottle of water... and then you look for a bench in nature where you can sit down with what you've brought with you while listening to the birds chirping and fresh air can enjoy peace and quiet. Like in old times! Although... even back in the GDR era, it tasted better in the restaurants. And that at prices between 2.50 and 4.90 marks and a beer for 0.40 Pf. We didn't earn much back then, but there was more honesty and less cheap show.

Wonderful beer garden & great terrace that invite you to linger, the view is beautiful and the food is unique and tastes excellent! The chef knows his craft perfectly! Knowledgeable, friendly staff, there is nothing to complain about!!! Always a pleasure to be a guest here!

The six of us had a pleasant meal. I had tagliatelle in lobster cream sauce and salmon. Two leaves of lettuce and two slices of baguette from the day before were served with it. The taste was good but not more than that. A touch too much cream for me, which masked the rest of the taste. The prices for the food are justified for fresh cuisine. A glass of wine from the region for just under €8 - is that necessary? Card payment is a must-have, which is a shame. The service was nice, reliable and quick. The view is enchanting. Inside it also looks very inviting.
