Bergwelt Kandel in Waldkirch

Great location, next to the paragliding launch site. Self-service. Update 08/25: Apparently there are new tenants; the lady at the bar was very, very friendly. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have a license yet, so for those who want a beer or something alcoholic, they'll have to wait. 😜 Unfortunately, there was no food available after 4:00 PM. And they're open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The terrace is beautiful, but there were empty plates with leftover food, empty bottles, and glasses everywhere because people didn't bring them back themselves. It's a self-service place, as nice as that is, but unfortunately, people (visitors, guests) ruin everything. Maybe they should remind them to return the dishes or put the trolley outside so people can see it, because it was hidden inside next to the bar... The restrooms also looked disastrous. It's truly sad what such a beautiful, newly built, and modern restaurant becomes when no one cares about maintaining hygiene standards. 🥲 PS: As a guest, you get a chip and can use the restroom for free, and the door to the restroom was also open across the street at the info point... just a tip for those claiming they have to pay for the restroom. You should also be aware that from the paragliding airfield, and also because it's a large hiking and cycling area, hundreds of people probably run in and "just want to go to the restroom" and don't eat anything, which isn't exactly great for the owner. Therefore, I understand if there's a barrier and you have to pay. As I said, as a paying guest who eats something, you get a chip and don't pay for the restroom. 😇

At 1241 meters, the Kandel near Waldkirch is the highest mountain in the region and also Waldkirch's impressive local mountain. It offers breathtaking views of the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley. The challenging ascent via St. Peter is particularly popular – a real highlight for cyclists and motorcyclists. For hikers, there are numerous, well-signposted trails of varying difficulty. Whether a leisurely stroll or a strenuous tour – everyone will find the right route here. Once at the top, visitors will find a wonderful restaurant serving regional cuisine and a panoramic terrace. There is ample parking directly at the summit. Particularly spectacular is the launch site for hang-gliders and paragliders, which regularly take off from here, creating colorful accents in the sky. The Kandel is worth a visit at any time of year – a true insider tip for nature lovers, hikers, and connoisseurs.

Self-service and a bit pricey, but worth a visit.

There was a thermos of coffee. At the next table, someone wanted something to eat. He came back with a topping and sauce from the microwave. The tables and chairs outside were dirty and without flowers or decorations. Everything was really unloved. What a shame for such a situation.

Beautiful view, perfect event and conference location!

What a lovely team! Warm, helpful, courteous, and relaxed even in the hustle and bustle! Delicious food, good value for money, and that mountain feeling included. We'll be back.

Stopped here after a hike. Unfortunately, there wasn't a large selection of drinks or food. And they didn't even provide a menu when asked. What a shame! The waitress behind the counter also seemed beyond annoyed. At first glance, it promises more than it actually delivers. In our opinion, there's still plenty of room for improvement... Empty drinks bottles in front of the entrance don't look particularly inviting either. Tables outside around 1 p.m. were anything but clean. Visit on June 24, 2025

I didn't eat here, just had coffee. I really like it and will definitely come back for dinner another time.

Great views and delicious cake reward the effort of cycling up to Kandel. The prices are a bit higher, but still reasonable. The menu is varied. While enjoying the view, you can watch the paragliders. A very positive thing was that I was able to have my water bottle refilled free of charge by the staff. Great!

Invited to breakfast. High expectations, unfortunately not met 🤫 What would have been a great view in the sunshine 👍 was unfortunately ruined by heavy rain and wind 🥲 We'll be back when the weather's nice.

Newly built building. Modern and functional furnishings. Suitable for a short stay and a snack after a hike. Prices are reasonable. The location is mountain-like. The landscape is beautiful. For this reason alone, it is a must for anyone who has not been there before and loves fresh air and a good view. A warm jacket is also a must. No matter how warm it is in the valley, it's always drafty up there. The motorhome pitches offered are definitely recommended for hiking enthusiasts. But only with auxiliary heating. Otherwise you'll freeze to death. One of the most beautiful places in the Black Forest. A must-have. Absolutely.

Fantastic view and friendly staff on site

Yesterday we spontaneously hiked to Kandel and sat down in the restaurant for lunch. With our two dogs we were able to enjoy the fantastic view from the terrace. The self-service system in the restaurant is excellent, you save yourself the long waiting time and take what you want. Hot food is brought to the table. The service is very friendly and accommodating, the food is fresh, appetizingly prepared and very tasty. The portions are generous and the prices are completely reasonable. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant, but we were given cozy blankets and water for our four-legged friends. All in all, a great, family-run restaurant with an incomparable view. We can't say anything about the food and service. But the ambience is just a tourist check-in, which is necessary there. There's skiing and tobogganing and then it's hard to do anything else. We personally didn't like it, but we weren't there to ski or toboggan. Please look at it yourself.

This morning we went on a trip and wanted to warm up around lunchtime (11:30). There was a sign on site saying that the self-service restaurant was open, but unfortunately all the doors were locked and no one could be reached by phone...

After the climb from Waldkirch, we were looking forward to stopping off. Beautiful self-service restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and a beautiful view of the valley. The lentil soup was very tasty and reasonably priced. Staff is friendly and the toilets are very clean. There are enough parking spaces available.

Went to the sb restaurant on November 24th, 2024 at 2 p.m.......I could see in advance that everything would be full for tobogganing and skiing on Saturday and there was beautiful snow.... That's why I don't understand why there are no more Wienerle at Reichenbach's butcher shop in Glottertal at 2 p.m.? They were only available sliced ​​in the lentil soup. Which of course children don't eat😏 It would have been nice if supplies had been taken care of before it ran out.

My criticism relates to the self-service restaurant: For me, preparing an Aperol Spitz with a cheap Rotkäppchen sparkling wine is pure profit maximization. I think it's cheeky to charge €7.90 for that.

Nothing left in stock in the restaurant on a holiday when the weather is great is a disgrace. No cake, no nothing. 10€ for a pair of geezers is usury. You also have to pay €1 for the toilet. 2 stars because the toilet was clean and has very spacious stalls. The only nice thing is the view, but it's there even without a restaurant.

€3.90 for a cappuccino with hardly anything in the cup other than foam seemed a bit steep to me But that little bit was ok. It all seemed a bit disorganized to me too. I'm surprised that dogs aren't allowed in the inn, as many families go on walks with dogs and would like to stop by in the winter when it's too cold on the terrace. (terrace allowed)

Beautiful view. Large parking lot. The on-site restaurant/snack bar is relatively small and the selection is not very large, but absolutely sufficient for a short stay/coffee. The rooms in the Bergwelt Kandel are very nicely furnished and match the surroundings. Attention was paid to details and a lot of passion was put into it, and that shows. I'd love to come back!

Great views, free parking and plenty of option to start a hike from here. Right next to the mountains is the take-off point for paragliders.

Very tasty lentil soup, self-service.

A very nice view over the country and the many hang gliders and paragliders.

The alleged “Black Forest cheese plate” consisted, among other things, of Babybel and very simple cheese. You shouldn't sell anything under a false name. The sausage salad was very salty and you got 3 slices from the end of a baguette. It was hard to get menus! It would be helpful to have QR codes on the table where you can access the menu online. Table numbers on tables... then the waitresses no longer have to look for the guest so often. That would be a small relief. (Most of the time customers have chosen a table before ordering) There was not enough space for the tray delivery It was very friendly service and a meal with a beautiful view!

Self-service restaurant, few seats inside

Were in the self-service restaurant. Unfortunately the taste was more than disappointing. The cheese spaetzle didn't taste like anything, it was very limp and very carelessly prepared. Cheese plates were unfortunately also disappointing with three half slices of bread and more cream cheese than others for the price. The staff was very nice.

We went to the Kandel because of the view and stopped here after a circular hike on the Josef Seeger Weg. There was cheese spaetzle with a side salad, both tasted good and fresh. We found value for money reasonable. The only note was that cold drinks were only available in bottles. The staff at the self-service counter are very friendly and brought the food to the table.

We took a lunch break here with a small meal. System catering - you grab a tray and collect what you want. It's wonderful to sit outside with a great view! It's definitely worth it. Starting point for paragliders, there is also a cinema with a great view.

Were only in the self-service restaurant. The Black Forest cheese plate was very disappointing. Consisting of 4 half slices of bread, a board with two rolled up slices of mountain cheese and 3 different pieces of cream cheese (apparently and also in terms of taste from the Rewe cream cheese wheel) paying just under €12 for this is already steep. - you have to know.

Visited Bergwelt for a friend’s wedding and stayed the night. Would highly recommend visiting if you have the opportunity, it is remote and situated kandel, and a distance away from Freiburg im Breisgau. The rooms felt very premium and luxurious, however the amazing thing about this hotel is the views as it is high up kandel.

Clean. Great view. Hang gliders and paragliders. Place to relax. A tour through the raised moor is recommended. Event hotel - mountain hotel new and highly recommended. Starting point for hikes.

Toilet costs extra. Absolute no-go for guests

Only visit the restaurant, not the hotel. Ambience very “system gastronomic” with slight tank & rest vibes. All food on site is 2-4 EUR more expensive than advertised online. When asked, it was said that the dishes were the same and therefore there was no reason to update the old price list. We found it dubious and therefore left again.

Self difficult to understand how it works you order you pay and the waitresses yell the name of the dish 😱 no discretion and above all not speaking a word of German it is difficult to find your dish wandering around the room and the terrace. The dishes remain expensive for a simple salad with 4 small pieces of chicken €16.

After a walk to the grosser kanelfelsen we took a break here and had something to drink and eat. Delicious beer and alcohol-free radler. We had the saftgulash with spatzle and the bauernsausage with kartoffelsalat. The food was delicious, the view is excellent, wonderful to watch the paragliders in the sun. Friendly staff. The dog was allowed onto the terrace. No dogs are allowed inside. Please bring your own water for your four-legged friend. A bowl of water for the many dogs would not be out of place. (tip). Prices are okay, despite the quite special location, I expected higher prices. 👍 We would love to come here again.

Hotel not used, but great place to visit

We made a quick stop for lunch at the restaurant. The food selection is okay, but quite expensive for the quality. Great view and you can watch the paragliders take off. The staff is nice, there are enough free parking spaces, and the sanitary facilities are clean.

After our hike we checked out the new restaurant. Self service. It was very windy on the terrace despite the glasses. Not our case. We remain loyal to the Gummenhütte.

I can't judge the hotel. As a cyclist, I would like to make a suggestion that, in my opinion, would profitably extend the cyclists' stay on the Kandel. Installation of one or more so-called saddle stands. After your beloved and often expensive racing bike has a safe place, you would like to have a good cafe and a piece of cake, but unfortunately that is not available in the food truck next to the hotel. Unfortunately there is no seating either. You still want to keep an eye on your aforementioned racing bike while it has its safe place in the newly set up saddle stand. Unfortunately, the snack bar only sells a greasy sausage (the hundreds of cyclists who come to the Kandel usually don't eat it). So my. Vision: I drive up to the Kandel in a good mood, hang up my bike there, sit down within sight and enjoy a delicious coffee from the portafilter machine and a piece of delicious cake. I like to take a break here when I'm on my motorbike. Beautiful view. If the weather is good, all the way to France.

Very beautiful landscape, ideal location for a biker break. Food by what we cannot call it otherwise, mediocre. Nothing is done for non-Germans. I don't recommend.

Very disappointed, impossible to understand the map, only in German (no English translation). No Google connection to try to understand. the boss was very very unpleasant. Very average and expensive meal. Don't go there.

Absolutely avoid. Unpleasant, no respect for the customer, overpriced but more than anything honest. Paid WC and room. The only positive point, the view. To avoid spoiling your stay, move on.

Menu in German only. Rude boss. 2 dishes ordered and paid in advance, none served, only one refunded after more than 45 minutes of waiting, and German customers served before us.... We call them thieves... This restaurant should be banned. What remains is the truly magnificent panorama.

We went to the “Spiesser Evening with Burn a Brettle” event in the Kandel mountains. Mega evening with great food, great location and nice staff. We didn't have a room in the hotel, so the rating was only for the event.

We went to the Spießer Evening event in the Kandel mountains The food was very good and the service was extremely friendly and attentive. A very nice room too. The boss and manager of the house were also very friendly and accommodating. A successful weekend.

Great views from the terrace, which is, however, quite sparse. Something like an airport terrace. Unfortunately only self-service. The friendly staff and the disabled-accessible design of the outdoor and indoor areas are positive.

Self-service restaurant with a fantastic panoramic view

We visited the restaurant as a family. The dishes on offer were very clear and you could pick up more at the front of the counter. I think the prices are too high for a self-service restaurant. Unfortunately, the quality of the food we ate was not particularly good either. The cake counter (at 3:00 p.m.) was also uninviting with 6 pieces of cake, which unfortunately didn't look appealing either. Unfortunately we wouldn't come back to eat, which is a shame because the location is really great.

Schon zum dritten Mal habe ich als Seminarveranstalter und Trainer die Bergwelt Kandel erlebt. Ich kann diese Location ohne Einschränkungen empfehlen. Besondere Anerkennung verdienen: 1. Die grandiose Aussicht. 2. Die hervorragende Verpflegung (wer gerne Fleisch isst, wird die Küche hier lieben). 3. Der große Panorama-Seminarraum. Die technische Seminarausstattung. 4. Die Zimmer mit viel Schwarzwald-Flair. 5. Der perfekte Service bei Vorbereitung und Durchführung des Seminars. Ich komme sehr gerne wieder hier her!

An alle Hundehalterinnen und -halter: Hunde sind verboten. Als das Restaurant auf dem Kandel mit vielen Parkmöglichkeiten und als Startpunkt für Wanderungen ist das persönlich für mich ein Unding. Wir waren eine größere Gruppe und durften uns aufgrund der Hunde nicht niederlassen. Da scheint das Geld nicht so nötig zu sein. Wir waren zur Vesperzeit vor Ort. Im Restaurant saßen kaum Leute und trotzdem hörte man lautstarke Beschwerden über die lange Wartezeit für Getränke und Speisen. Die Sterne gibt es für den phantastischen Ausblick und den modernen Baustil. Die Nutzung der Toiletten kostet 1 Euro. Für Gäste sicherlich kostenlos.

Ja richtig schön geworden. Ich finde es nur schade das die Hunde nicht hinein dürfen. Ich verstehe den Grund nicht. Das Personal ist freundlich und die Preise in Ordnung. Der Ausblick traumhaft. Es ist ein schöner Ort

Ich fahre oft mit meinem E-Bike hoch weil es so schön ist und wenn die. Gleitschirmflieger ober sind zuschauen wie sie starten das ist toll oder einfach nur in die Ferne schauen einfach toll kann ich jeden empfehlen wer abschalten möchte die Gastronomie hat nicht immer auf deshalb war ich ganz schön überrascht 😁also viel Spaß beim Radeln zur Kandel ☺️

Wunderschöner Sonnenuntergang in Kandel

Wir waren kürzlich am frühen Nachmittag an bei bestem Sonnenschein als Ausflügler dort - und erstaunt, wie gut die Bergwelt besucht war. Viel helles Holz, ein schönes, angenehmes Interieur, freundliche Begrüßung, angenehmer Service, wir haben uns sofort willkommen und wohl gefühlt. Unsere Essensbestellung wurde am Tisch serviert (Saftgulasch + Bauernbratwürste). Es war sehr lecker und wurde mit einem Espresso abgerundet. Die Aussicht gerade von der Terrasse ist phänomenal - wir werden kommen sehr gerne wieder.

Joar ganz nett. Selbstbedienung ist jetzt auch kein Problem. Dame an der Theke mit Hoodie und Adiletten.... naja.. passt nicht so zum eigentlich echt schönen Ambiente. Latte Glas war auch nur 3/4 gefüllt. Erst nur 1 Sorte Kuchen da.. auf Nachfrage kamen dann noch 2 Sorten dazu. Luft nach oben. Zimmer kann ich nicht bewerten.. Waren nur zu Kaffee und Kuchen dort

Theke vom Selbstbedienungsrestaurant könnte übersichtlicher und effizienter gestaltet sein. Essen war gut 😊

Es ist ein Traum hier zu sein und einfach nur da zu sitzen und um die Aussicht auf sich wirken zu lassen. Super Service Auch der Weg hoch sind schon ein Erlebnis wert 😃

Ist zwar Selbstbedienung, aber trotzdem toll und geht auch flott. Uns hat es gefallen und geschmeckt. Haben beim Essen den Drachen, und Gleitschirmflieger zugesehen.
