Bastion Marie in Kronach

We visited twice today. Once at lunchtime, the second time at coffee time. We were greeted warmly each time. 10 minutes later, the drinks, food, and ice cream menus appeared. So far, so good, but then nothing happened. The waitress walked past our table several times, but we couldn't place an order. After waiting 35 minutes each time, we finally gave up and went to the JUFA Hotel restaurant, where we received a very warm welcome and were also very well looked after.

After a trip to Nordhalben, we visited the Bastion Marie restaurant. The service, friendliness, and attentiveness were first-class. Although the kitchen was closed, we had a "Franconian tapas" that was very good. We would recommend it and repeat ourselves.

We ordered cheese spaetzle and liver cheese with fried potatoes. It tasted very good, but the portions were very small. We left hungry. We found the prices too high for such small portions.

The location and view are very nice. The food is absolutely delicious, but the portions are really small for the price (cheese spaetzle, meatloaf with potatoes). Unfortunately, you'll leave the table feeling hungry.

The staff was very friendly, and so was the service, but we had to wait a terribly long time. The place wasn't busy at all, but after waiting 20 minutes, we went inside to order. We were then sent back outside and told to order at the table. After that, it took almost another 10 minutes for our order to be taken. (And we only ordered a drink and a small dessert.)

Thank you for the lovely evening. The food was perfect, the service competent and friendly, and the price was reasonable. Keep it up, we'll be back 😁

Reservations are not mandatory. According to the junior manager, it's now a fact that an employee made an individual mistake, meaning they were assigned a table outside instead of inside. Unfortunately, the manager was sitting there with her partner and pointed them to a different table, this one not waterproof. When the manager commented that it was a bit chaotic, an argument ensued, which ended with the manager's partner saying they could leave. Great announcement! Considering everything went wrong on Valentine's Day, 5 courses. 1, then 3, after complaining, 2, then 5!!! Now we'd better leave it alone; there are still some truly top-notch restaurants.

Amazing view, super attentive staff (the kids' food arrived very quickly), and the price, quality, and service were wonderful! The food was delicious!

The prices on the menu don't match the actual bill. Furthermore, it's pretty cheeky to deduct just €2 from the €26 price for a child's portion. My bread dumpling was the worst I've ever eaten (at least the mushroom sauce was good). The other meals were okay to good. I actually expect the staff to clear away the glasses of previous guests first. The view over the city is, of course, magnificent.

I would like to give a review of the food, but we didn't get one. The beer garden was only half full, but according to the information inside, there were 50 guests. No food available, but drinks were available. After 10 minutes, we were told we could order something, but even when we asked, we didn't receive a menu. My husband got his drink after 45 minutes, but mine didn't arrive at all, even after asking. After an hour, I went inside to cancel my drink. Only two tables were occupied inside. A succinct reply: "Oh, it just got lost." A structured table layout for service would certainly make things easier, especially when there's an event at the castle. Several guests left the beer garden without drinks, including us, because the event had just started.

Very disappointing experience. We ended up leaving because our drink order was not served even after a long wait. I also noticed guests at other tables leaving, likely for the same reason — extremely slow or missing service. (to clarify, the Waiters were very quick, it was just the kitchen staff which was extremely, painfully slow) We had ordered a cold coffee, which is a fairly simple and quick item to prepare. After waiting 20 minutes, we asked about our order. The waitress assured us, “I checked, it’s coming very, very soon.” Another 10 minutes passed, and she returned to tell us, “Sorry, we forgot your order. If you're willing to wait, we can start preparing it now.” At that point, we decided to leave. Very poor service and overall a frustrating visit.

A hidden gem in Upper Franconia! What a wonderful experience! Yesterday we visited the impressive Rosenberg Fortress – and the highlight was the Bastion Marie restaurant. The location is truly idyllic – high up on the fortress with a magical view over Kronach and the surrounding area. The beer garden is a real gem: atmospheric, quiet, and very well-kept. The menu offers something for every taste, and the dishes are prepared with love. The service was prompt, friendly, and attentive – exactly what you'd expect. An absolute insider tip for anyone who wants to combine culture, nature, and good food. We'll definitely be back!

Update: We've been to Bastion Marie several times now and can now also recommend the fabulous cuisine. This time we sat and ate inside the Bastion and were delighted by the ambiance and the cuisine. The staff is always perfect, but the food is also very delicious; you definitely have to try the cake. A very nice atmosphere, with a great view of Kronach. The service was very friendly and the beer is excellent. We tried several different beers and all of them are highly recommended, especially the prices for the drinks.

Waiting for the menu took three quarters of an hour. After that I didn't see the need to eat anything else, so I can't rate the food

I haven't eaten so badly in a long time. It is to be expected that it is quite expensive at a castle like this (where the Rotary Club is also a regular). Then at least the quality should be good. I can't remember ever eating such a bad rump steak. Aside from the fact that it was already quite small, about 1/3 of it was a non-chewable layer of fat. Both steaks were ordered medium rare. One was too well received, the other too English. They also didn't manage to leave out the salad they ordered. When it came to dessert, it was also not possible to bring both desserts at the same time. First the dessert came from the kitchen and then 10 minutes later the tiramisu from the cake counter. In fact, the tiramisu was so bad that I left it after 2 bites. Regarding the service: the waitresses were nice, but the whole store is simply not organized at all. Our reserved table was assigned twice and all the service staff did everything. Nobody seems to have a say and there are no areas as to who serves which table. And you notice that as a customer.

Nach dem Besuch der Festung mit der Führung waren wir hier zum Mittagessen. Ich kannte das Lokal schon von meinem Besuch vor fast drei Jahren. Damals war ich sehr angetan, vom Essen, der freundlichen Bedienung und der wunderschönen Lage. Und auch dieses Mal wurde ich bzw. wir nicht enttäuscht. Das Essen ist nach wie vor sehr gut und die Bedienung immer noch sehr freundlich! Die Preise sind für die Qualität des Essens angemessen und auch sonst hat alles bestens gepasst. Also um 11:00 Uhr die Führung durch die Festung mitmachen, dann um 12:30 Uhr zum Mittagessen einkehren und dann die Fränkische Galerie besuchen! Ein runder Tag! Parken ist tatsächlich direkt hinter der Festung kostenfrei, jaum jemand traut sich, nach hinten durchzufahren. Das als kleiner besonderer Tipp von mir 🙂.

Das Essen war sehr gut, Sonderwünsche kein Problem, Preise ok, Service perfekt. Und dann diese Aussicht - was will man mehr?

Eating and drinking is perfectly fine if you are served. We were there several times and the service generally took a very long time (at least 20 minutes for a drink). One day we wanted to eat there, 2 of the 3 dishes we ordered came about 30 minutes later, the third didn't come at all (I was then allowed to go buy kebab so that everyone could get dinner). We wanted to go there two days later for a drink in the sun and were of course prepared for long waiting times. After thirty minutes my request was dismissed with an annoyed "I'll come straight away", 15 minutes later we still hadn't been served and left. Underground every time!

It's a shame everything closed because of wealth. Half an hour before the end you are sent home because no one is in the mood anymore. You may need to adjust and correct the opening times. And this is just a matter of principle

Stopped at Bastion Marie for the first time after a hike. Drinked good beer and really good mulled wine, ate delicious food and... immediately reserved it for Valentine's Day 😊 What can I say... it was fantastic again 🎉 Mind you, it would be wrong to only praise the food. It is also or above all the people who ensure that Bastion Marie is special. Hospitality is really the priority here 😊 Our new favorite place💕 Highly recommended 🥰

Discovered by chance on a short trip to Kronach, 'Bastion Marie' turns out to be a real pearl. Great food, even for vegetarians, and really good service made dinner a real pleasure. The whole thing is rounded off by the extensive and careful selection of wine.

Canceled on the same day because there was snow chaos and we would have to travel 60 km. We have three toddlers and two babies on board. When we canceled, there was zero understanding, shouting and rude responses. This kind of behavior is disgusting. Not recommended for that reason alone.

Due to catastrophic road conditions, snow chaos and a journey of approx. 60km, we unfortunately had to cancel our reservation for the New Year's brunch by phone shortly beforehand. I fully understand that this is a more than annoying situation for the operator. Expressing your displeasure to me in such a choleric and cheeky manner over the phone is absolutely unacceptable. "After all, those who work there also came to work!" - one of many impossible quotes. I'm assuming that those without small children go to work and live much closer. Long story short: never again!

After a long time, my husband and I had no children, so today we decided to look for a restaurant to eat... Quite a difficult task on New Year's Day, which we quickly abandoned as nothing was open in the city center... A spontaneous walk to the fortress was rewarded with the open doors of Bastion Marie... By chance a few other guests had reserved a table... We were greeted very nicely and served excellently by the young waiter, Fabio... My husband had the rump steak and I had the pumpkin soup as a starter and the venison as the main course... Everything was a poem from beginning to end... I went to a Christmas party in the Bastion many years ago and was thrilled and again today... My husband was also more than satisfied... We can only recommend it and will come back soon... We had a really wonderful wedding celebration in the Bastion Marie, we were warmly welcomed with an aperitif, the service was great, the staff were very accommodating and friendly. We chose savory/sweet finger food, were given very good advice right from the start and had a large selection. The food was really very tasty. The rooms were decorated according to our ideas and we couldn't have imagined it to be more beautiful. Thank you for this unforgettable day🌼

Everything happened very quickly, only 10 minutes between breakfast and lunch.

Went to the Advent Brunch today which was so praised by the guests and reviews. We reserved a table based on the good reviews and were extremely disappointed. Breakfast was poor and little choice. At lunch, the heat containers and the tablecloths, which remained dirty, weren't even wiped down. Everything designed so carelessly has nothing to do with Christmas. The atmosphere around is so loud and crowded that you can no longer understand each other. Service was not focused and stressed. 35€ is definitely not justified. Lunch was absolutely not edible. The dumplings tasted like sauerkraut and the bread dumplings were dry and hard. We didn't see the sweet variety either. It was definitely not worth the money and we won't be coming back.

We spontaneously visited the fortress after a tour. Everything couldn't have been better ;-))! Very good food, friendly, attentive service, nice feel-good atmosphere. We look forward to our next visit to the “Bastion Marie”!

We always enjoy coming here. We particularly liked the beer garden. But of course also the delicious food and the always super friendly service. Just really great here.

Great view from the beautiful beer garden of the impressive fortress and down to the town. We weren't completely satisfied with the visit itself: At first the waitress didn't notice us for a long time - and also kept us waiting to pay. We've had better cheesecake. But the view made up for it.

The non-alcoholic beer tastes very good here. Service very friendly.

Ideal location for a wedding reception

We were invited to a celebration at Bastion Marie. Very nice atmosphere, friendly service and good food.

Terrible service: On a weekday afternoon when the weather was nice and there were very few guests in the beer garden. My wife and I each ordered an ice cream sundae. After we still hadn't been served any ice cream after (at least) 20 minutes, the waitress pointed this out. She replied that she had something else to do. After I said that we weren't used to such a long wait (for an ice cream), she replied: "Then you'll just have to get used to it now." This is an incredibly bold and cheeky answer that cannot be accepted. We then immediately left the beer garden. It was a frustrating experience. Since this restaurant is also a kind of flagship for the city of Kronach, such behavior is not good for the image among strangers.

Great location on the fortress with a beautiful view. Even on hot days it's easy to stay under the trees. The two of us shared the cake because it was a big piece. Delicious !

Nice restaurant on the heights of Kronach right in front of the castle

Der Biergarten liegt sehr schön auf der Festung. Tolles Ambiente und sehr einladend gestaltet. Leider kommt das Personal und die Küche den Bestellungen nicht hinterher. Die Anzahl der Tische bzw Gäste passt nicht. Die Wartezeit auf die Getränke ist schon lang (ca 30 min) aber die Wartezeit aufs Essen ist wirklich unfassbar. Wir haben über 2 Stunden gewartet. Anschließend haben wir kein Dessert mehr bekommen, weil die Küche schon zu war. Die Essensqualität macht es auch nicht wieder gut. Durchscnittliches Biergartenessen.

First of all we have to praise the service/kitchen performance. With a full terrace and a full beer garden, service is quick and friendly. When it comes to price/performance, the scales unfortunately tip a little towards price, but in the end this is due to the location. All in all, it was a pleasant evening.

The restaurant itself is really good, the only thing is that I wanted to go out for dinner with my family in the evening. We were told that the kitchen was only open until 9 p.m. and I was a little disappointed because we were all hungry and hungry. That's why only 4 stars and throughout Kronach the kitchen was always too early. In my town there was ALWAYS food until at least 11 p.m. 😖🙃

Who would have thought that an old fortress in Upper Franconia would house the best cheese spaetzle ever? These creamy, tender delicacies were a true revelation. Added to that was the unfiltered beer from the Kaiserhof brewery, brewed especially for this restaurant - a pure explosion of taste! So convincing that I returned the next day just to enjoy this noble hop drink again

After a short hike, I stopped here on a Friday lunchtime. Enjoyed a cold shandy and a tarte flambée on the beautiful terrace with a wonderful view in bright sunshine. The three service ladies were curt due to the large number of guests and are probably a little more attentive otherwise. The beer garden has pleasantly relaxed seating, either beer benches or dining tables, in the sun, under trees or parasols. The choice of food is huge. I'm looking forward to an event up there.

The wait for the menu was 10 minutes, the wait for the beer was 30 minutes, I didn't have the patience to wait for the food, and there were maybe 5 tables occupied. I don't recommend it

Good down-to-earth restaurant/tavern with a good location and an excellent view over Kronach For dinner, the service was excellent - the food was very tasty and had a 'typical Bavarian' flavor. It has more of a beer garden feel than a classic restaurant - you have to be aware of that But the concept of the beer garden works very well - under the trees and with the view, it invites you to linger In the afternoon, when we wanted to have a coffee, we were sent away again because, according to our own information, there was a stop to admission due to the first communion companies that were present. The guest garden was half full - unfortunately that was a bit of a shame Otherwise great!

For our wedding anniversary we made a reservation for breakfast at Bastion Marie on a Wednesday. The breakfast was very good and also plentiful. But! And that was disappointing - despite a reservation it wasn't covered for us, although the number of guests was manageable - two other guests. This reduced the feeling of well-being a lot. The service staff were very busy and the decking work was therefore clearly in the foreground. A pity. A few impressions that could still be improved: When you come in, it is very dark in the restaurant. And in our case it was just as cold inside as outside - our noses were running. This time we were probably unlucky with the feel-good atmosphere.

Very nice atmosphere and the view over Kronach is unbeatable! I had a delicious piece of cake with a good coffee. Very satisfied. Staff very nice and accommodating. You can also pay by card. Afterwards you can take a nice walk around the fortress. Gladly again.

Great location at the top of the hill outside the fort. Nice walk up from the main town, makes your legs ache which makes you appreciate the food more!

Completely exorbitant prices. You're happy to pay a little more if it's good. And it wasn't that great. It justifies the price. A small salad for just under 10 euros and it was really very small. Somewhere else it's a side salad. And it was the main meal also a small portion. And then still too expensive

A very nice restaurant... we came spontaneously on a diet at 5 p.m.... it was still empty, we had a nice table for 2. The service was very friendly, the drinks and food came quickly. Very, very tasty and reasonable prices. Wonderful view directly from the top of Rosenberg Fortress. We recommend. 👍

There is no more beautiful place and no better view in Kronach than here, the ox cheeks taste sensational and the service is top notch. :)

We wanted to order and it took a while for someone to come. Well the season is just beginning but the cake was super delicious 😋. Then we wanted to pay and told the nice waitress who said she would pass it on. It takes forever for someone to come. I didn't think that was that good. Nevertheless, everyone is super nice and polite.

We held our Christmas party there, the atmosphere is very nice, the staff was very friendly, the food was good.

Auf der Feste - einen tolleren Standort kann man kaum finden. Deutsche Küche auf Top-Niveau. Zusammen mit der Umgebung jederzeit den Weg nach oben wert. Leider hab ich vor Gier keine Bilder gemacht. Beim nächsten Mal dann!

Rewelacyjne miejsce z przepięknymi widokami. Obsługa mówi również w języku angielskim, a jeśli nie, to próbują porozumieć się z obcokrajowcami bez problemu. Wszyscy są mili i uprzejmi. Jedzenie bardzo dobre i świeże. Najlepszy Radler jakiego piłam, a to wszystko na zamku z widokiem na Kronach. Polecam bardzo.
