Great food and reasonable prices!

Today's meal, octopus with spaghetti al olio and peperocini, was fantastic; it couldn't be better. We were all very satisfied.

On the advice of my dear friend Katja, the four of us went to the Alter Holzturm in Eltville today. It was fantastic. The food was exceptionally good, the atmosphere cozy, with attention to detail. Whether it was the appetizers, main courses, desserts, or coffee—everything was top-notch! The friendly, professional, and attentive service deserves special mention. Special requests were no problem at all and were fulfilled without hesitation. We were thrilled and would love to come back. Absolutely recommend it and therefore give it 5 stars! Thank you so much!

There were eight of us there... everything went great!

When the four of us entered the courtyard today, we were delighted by the lovely ambiance. So we sat down and asked the staff about gluten-free food, as we had been assured in advance over the phone that "everything could be made gluten-free." Unfortunately, this was by no means the case. The staff weren't very knowledgeable, and the allergy menu was inaccurate. In the end, we could only eat salad, fries, and meat, although the vegetarian options were generally very limited. The food (the salad and, for those of us without celiac disease, the pasta) tasted quite good, but wasn't anything special. We were quite disappointed, as we had been assured in advance that there would be a wide selection, and it was also quite a hassle to find out which dishes were gluten-free. Overall, we unfortunately cannot recommend the restaurant for allergy sufferers, but we still had a reasonably pleasant stay, thanks in part to the friendliness of the staff, which remained unfailing despite all the hardships.

We went to the Altes Holztor with our family. The food was good and tasteful, and the ambiance was also okay—cozy without being particularly outstanding. The service, however, could have been more attentive: we had to wait longer, even though the restaurant wasn't overly busy. Overall, a pleasant evening, but there was room for improvement, especially in terms of service.

Top place to go, great experience here, Maria was awesome ! Outside is great but I recommend to make a reservation if you want to sit there, because the place is always full, you have better chances to find a place if you go inside.

Almost invisible from the street, the back courtyard is such a lovely and quiet place to linger, very cozy 🙃. The service was very friendly and attentive. I ordered a small antipasti platter with warm pizza bread, which was very varied and delicious. For the main course, I had a Pizza Quattro Stagione, a light and crispy pizza base topped with fresh ingredients, very tasty! The prices are more than fair; even the drinks are quite reasonable. I'll definitely be back.

Not recommended – disappointing pizza & lackluster food The restaurant has an old, dusty interior that desperately needs renovation. The ambiance seems more appealing to older guests. The service was very good, friendly, and attentive. The prices are also reasonable, but the food was unfortunately disappointing.

This was our second time there and probably our last for a while. Overall, it was unfortunately only mediocre. The food was unconvincing in terms of taste and presentation. The pasta was served in a thick cream sauce, just like in the 70s, and the asparagus was boiled until it fell apart. Italian cuisine can be different these days, and you don't need a Michelin star for that; you just need fresh ingredients, a bit of imagination, and, of course, skill in preparation. The waiter didn't even ask if we enjoyed the food (perhaps there was a good reason for that). The ambiance, however, is very nice. We didn't have pizza, but it looked pretty good. Perhaps that's what you should stick to when eating at Holztor.

Friendly staff, delicious food and great value for money

The food was okay, and the pizza was also delicious. The service staff was polite and friendly. The prices are reasonable. Our confirmed reservation for outdoor seating was unfortunately "forgotten," so we had to sit inside. The dark interior ambiance (rustic oak) is dated, and the furniture is a bit worn in places; the chairs desperately need new covers. The tablecloths on our table were stained in several places, and the appetizer plates were also dirty. There are a few things that can and should be improved.

Fazit: Kein erkennbarer Koch, keine Sorgfalt.Wer im Rheingau Qualität sucht: Finger weg vom Alten Holztor!Unser Besuch war der erste und letzte.

We ordered two Spaghetti Fruiti de Mare and were served this. A tomato mush with overcooked spaghetti—nothing al tende. The seafood consisted of five or seven small mussel shells, some with mussel meat, and nothing else. The Parmesan cheese was as fine as desert sand, dry and tasteless. Luckily, we had a spoon to eat the mush with. Our complaint to the waitress was ignored. Price per person: an insane €15.50. Our grandson had schnitzel with fries. The fries were thinner than the already thin fries at Mac Donnels and greasy. The schnitzel meat was 3 mm thin and dry. The breading was wafer-thin and peeled off the meat like wallpaper. Our impression was frozen food. Conclusion: Never again.

I had dinner here with my grandma 3 weeks ago. Schnitzel was very tasty and the atmosphere is great.

Got there, it seems like the only place open on a Bank holiday, but will do, outside was full, inside very hot, few tables still free and not air conditioning, tables still with glasses from previous guests. My daughter asked, to the man who probably was the manager, in perfect German, if there will be a chance of a free table outside in the garden and the guy was so rude to her, looked at her and said NO! Not even let me check, or perhaps in 10 minutes.. as me and my daughter decided to leave the restaurant, my husband, German, was already waiting outside at the same time, he luckily did get a free table next to other three empty ones. My daughter was furious because she just wanted to be polite and ask before seating down anywhere. It was evident the guy who was rude to her, didn’t like the look of my daughter, not sure because she has olive skin and dark hair or the look of her or just because she is a woman, but she just felt so upset and nearly crying and very angry said she felt that he didn’t like women or probably is just plainly racist. As it was late and bank holiday, we just decided to stay in and eat there and forget about the bad customer experience with a couple of beers and aperol and plenty of food. However, since we live occasionally locally I doubt I’ll be going back there, certainly not with my 23 year old daughter who said she will certainly tell all of her medical colleagues about her bad experience too. So yes appearances are definitely very important in this place.

Yesterday we ate at the Altes Holztor following a recommendation. We reserved a table in advance (which was good) it was very busy. The welcome from the staff was very friendly and we were escorted to the table. The drinks came quickly, including a bowl of water for our dog. As a starter we had bruschetta. Fresh ingredients - tomatoes, rocket, garlic = very good! The main course was rump steak (rare) - it was on point, very tender, the fries were served on a separate plate (preheated). = very tasty! The waitresses were very friendly and attentive. We can only recommend this restaurant and we will come back. Thank you for your great job

We were there for dinner with 11 people on New Year's Eve! Unfortunately we were a bit disappointed this time! 3 people ordered a fillet steak, which unfortunately wasn't served in the desired way of preparation, instead of medium rare, one was well-done and the other was very bloody! Also, the sizes of the steaks were very different! The dish, Linguine Frutti di Mare, contained a shrimp, and otherwise just small mussels and garlic slices! The venison goulash looked like it was cooked, the dumpling was cold the first time, and there was hardly any sauce on the second try! We were therefore disappointed, especially since our last New Year's Eve dinner in 2023 was very, very tasty! There were no complaints at all! The waitresses were all very friendly! After this evening Of course we had to ask ourselves: Was there a change of chef(s) here??? It's a real shame, but we'll try it again and are excited!!

The service was subpar... dishes and drinks were sometimes forgotten. Empty plates were not cleared away or only after far too long...unfortunately the food wasn't good either because dishes like schnitzel or even pizza were far too greasy or oily...

We had dinner with 11 people and the food came together very well. The tomato soup was very tasty. The rump steak was fried to perfection. Unfortunately the side dishes are not that good, the fries are much too hard, the salad is better. The service was very friendly.

By chance we walked through Eltville on December 21st. And discovered this beautiful restaurant. The atmosphere was great, very cozy, service was top notch, the food was served promptly and tasted excellent, especially the pizza was great. Price/performance excellent, the second dish of salmon fillet with leaf spinach and potatoes was also very good. On the whole. A great restaurant with a great team, chef and atmosphere 👌. Today the four of us had dinner at the Altes Holztor. The reason was a gift voucher I received for this restaurant. I had already reserved a table a week before and specifically asked not to sit in the middle because we wanted to play our little guessing game (Spyfall) during the meal. We felt like we got the best table in the restaurant – exactly as we had imagined. We started with three different starters, which were unanimously rated as “outstanding”. Everyone also chose something different for the main course: steak on rocket, fried pork fillet, pizza and Jägerschnitzel. Our unanimous opinion was: “incredibly delicious”. My Jägerschnitzel was an Italian version – different from other restaurants. The sauce had a subtle wine flavor and was simply delicious. The pizza came from a stone oven and was obviously not baked in a baking tray, as is often the case. Just looking at them made my mouth water - I would have loved to try them. But I was able to taste the grilled pork fillet: juicy, with fine roasted aromas. Simply delicious! At the end everyone had a different dessert, which also tasted excellent. In particular, my counterpart's homemade brittle ice cream not only looked fantastic, but according to him it also tasted exactly the same. Our youngest participant (12 years old) is not usually a big eater. But when he suddenly eats adult portions, it speaks volumes about the excellent taste of the food. We enjoyed the evening to the fullest and found a new favorite restaurant. We would love to come back

After the new tenant in the Old Wooden Gate, the food got worse. Whether pizza was hard, you were given extra large sharp knives, the taste was bland. Spaghetti aglio seasoned boringly without garlic. Liver with fried potatoes. Fried potatoes should be fried in a pan... right? It's a shame everything used to be better!! Our last attempt at this Italian restaurant will be appetizer plates or salads.

Quaint decor and more of an older crowd. The food was below average, at least on the day we were there. The fries were an absolute disaster, fried way too long and hard as bones. The schnitzel was also very tasteless and tough to chew - a shame. What can be highlighted positively is that there are certainly special requests that can be fulfilled.

I felt warmly welcomed there and had a delicious meal. If you're ever in Eltville, you should stop there.

Ich hatte einen leckeren Salat. Eine absolute Zumutung waren die Tagliatelle Salmone meiner Partnerin. Völlig vekochte pampige Nudeln in einem tiefen Teller zum Teil regelrechte Klumpen. Der Teller ging zurück. Dann aber offenbar der Versuch, meine Frau zu veräppeln. Interessanterweise kam nun eine längliche flache Schüssel. Es handelte sich um dieselben vermochten pampigen Nudeln, die man etwas voneinander getrennt hatten, so dass keine Klumpen mehr sichtbar waren. Was haben die denn für einen Koch, der so etwas herausgibt. Wir zahlten dann nur nach nochmaliger Reklamation die Hälfte des Preises, da wir einen Teil der italienischen "Spitzenklassengerichtes" hungrig verzehrt hatten.

We come here very often with friends and are extremely satisfied every time. Such delicious food at affordable prices is hard to find these days. Great day menu, both evening and lunchtime. We also like to spend our lunch break here in the home office.

Rustikales italienisches Restaurant im Herzen von Eltville, sehr freundlicher Empfang und schattiges Plätzchen auf der Terrasse, leckerer Salat Nicoise als Vorspeise mit warmen Brot und Kräuterbutter, große schmackhafte Pizza, einzig wäre eventuell etwas weniger Öl darauf wünschenswert...., Nachtisch Zabaione ebenfalls sehr lecker 😋, dazu ein äußerst aufmerksamer Service und vernünftige Preise...., insgesamt sehr zu empfehlen...., wir kommen gerne wieder...., kostenlose Parkplätze in der Nähe und Hunde sind hier willkommen....

We were there this lunchtime: friendly welcome and a shady spot on the terrace, the Nizza salad as a starter was very tasty 😋, the pizza was very large and tasty, perhaps a little too much oil, this should perhaps be applied individually as needed... ., Dessert Zabaione also delicious and drinks well chilled and service excellent...., we'll be happy to come back when we're in Eltville...

Really very nice and quick service in the restaurant's beautiful courtyard. The food was very tasty and the price just couldn't be beat. We paid €8.50 for a lunch menu - schnitzel with pepper cream sauce, fries and salad. And before that there were even small rolls with delicious herb butter. We can only recommend the restaurant and would be happy to come back. Update 06/2024: Asparagus (approx. 400 gr.) with Hollandaise sauce and potatoes for € 16.50. The asparagus wasn't cooked yet, nor were the potatoes, and the hollandaise tasted just like a ready-made product from the discount store. A pity.

Nice and good restaurant, great pizzas and nice service

I had a table at the back of the restaurant. The chair creaked a bit, it should be checked. The restaurant seemed cozy to me, I was alone there, I liked it. As a starter I ordered a small capricciosa salad which was very tasty (I only noticed afterwards when I looked at the bill that it was a large salad that had been charged : ( ). Afterwards I ordered a calzone, which I had to add some Waiting time wasn't a problem for me this evening. I also enjoyed it. I can recommend the Altes Holztor restaurant!

Hier kann einiges verbessert werden . Einen Stern für die Bedienung, sie freundlich und bemüht. Allerdings dauerte es zu lange, bis man sich um uns bemühte. Einen Stern für die Qualität der Speisen . Was geht besser : Verwelkte Rosen auf den Tischen, runter gebrannte Kerzen . das macht keinen guten Eindruck. Die Tische haben minimale Größe, zu viert sitzt man sehr beengt. Die Portionen sind viel zu groß !! Da ist man schon vom Anblick satt. Hier wäre weniger definitiv mehr. Die Teller sind sehr groß für die minimalstische Größe der Tische und manche Speisen werden auf zwei Tellern gereicht . Was mich auch ärgert ist, wenn ich als Kunde, den Tisch frei räumen muss, damit die Speisen serviert werden können . Insgesamt für mich nicht empfehlenswert.

A nice trattoria with rustic decor. The menu is varied, but the pizzas are very fatty. Before serving, olive oil is added over it and it really stands out. The service is friendly and attentive.

We made reservations for 7 people on a Saturday. We sat down at our table and after waiting 20 minutes, we took the menus ourselves because no one brought them to us. We placed the order. The food trickled down to our table piece by piece. I can explain this using a dish with meat, a side salad and fries as an example. The side salad came first, then we had to wait another 20 minutes, then the meat came, then we had to wait another 20 minutes and finally the fries came. The dish was completely on the table after 90 minutes. At least that would have been it, but the person who ordered it ate the parts of the dish out of sheer hunger before everything was there. The meat would also have cooled down. In general, the service that evening was totally chaotic. We had 4 different waiters, each bringing some part of a dish to the table, but no dish was complete. In addition, the waiters did not feel responsible for the appetizer plates. We then had to take over the service again and put the empty appetizer plates at another table. When we asked a waiter about our main courses after waiting 75 minutes, they just said "Ok" and the waiter didn't show up at our table again the whole evening. As we were leaving we asked why it was taking so long. We were only told by a waitress that there were a lot of orders. Conclusion: The restaurant takes so many orders on Saturdays that it can no longer serve them and pure chaos breaks out. You then have to take care of the service yourself, clear the table, get menus and you have to wait 90 minutes to make a reservation.

Unfortunately, we have to correct our previous 5 star recommendation because the restaurant has seriously deteriorated in the kitchen. The pizza topping is cheap, completely inappropriate and the dough is so tough that you can't cut it but have to tear it. In addition, the taste of the whole thing is subterranean. A new chef or austerity measures? All that remains is the good service and the nice atmosphere. Although we have been regular customers for years, we would currently no longer eat here.

Wir sitzen heute hier und feiern den 60. Geburtstag. Das alte Holztor wurde von uns mehrfach besucht . Ich selbst war heute das erste mal hier . Die Fleisch Gerichte sowie Vorspeisen und Service sind wirklich TOP ! Danke für das Ambiente & die gute Küche 👌.

Sehr leckeres Essen. Das Personal war sehr aufmerksam. Die Räumlichkeiten waren weihnachtlich geschmückt, man hat sich rund um wohl gefühlt.

Sehr großzügige Portionen und sehr lecker. Gut besucht und daher etwas laut und trubelig.

Ein sehr gutes Gesamtpaket. Beginnend vom angenehmen, aufmerksamen, freundlichen Service über das gute Essen! Das Ambiente entspricht nicht dem einer italienischen Trattoria, aber das ist wirklich vernachlässigbar.
